Tour d’Andorra – Stage 4

It is time for the final stage of Tour d’Andorra. It’s a 230km caulker with 4 category 1 climbs before a short descenter into a mountaintop finish. So while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun cannot feel safe just yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/S5.png

An off to the races we go as a group of six riders attempt a breakaway shortly after the start has been called. The riders are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim.
They get a gap quite quickly with no followup attacks from the pack.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p1.jpg

However a couple of names are disgruntled by not being in the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Mannion & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Manfredi are the ones making a move for it. But they are not able to put distance to the pack.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p2.jpg

As the riders enter the first climb, the break’s gap is down to 15 seconds as multiple more riders try to create a gap up the incline. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Manfredi goes again, alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Johannesen.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p3.jpg

Even more riders are trying to make a break for it, seems like a lot of riders are looking to create something on this final day of the race.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p4.jpg

The break quickly creates a gap of just under 4 minutes 20kms from the summit in the front group consisting of 20 riders we have:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Chaves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Home & Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Frankiny, Campero & Chhetri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Raileanu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Mannion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Robov & Brändle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Simon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Antunes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro & Costagli.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p5.jpg

After the break manifested itself, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Fernandez decided to start bridging the gap to the front group. The Spaniard is 2 minutes behind the front group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p6.jpg

After a few kilometers Fernandez gets contact as the gap continues to grow to over 5 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p7.jpg

There’s a lot of interest in the mountain points. The only real threats are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle at 26 points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro at 22 points. The current leader is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Henao with 62 points. So even with 4 climbs with points today something magical would need to happen for the Colombian to feel any pressure.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p8.jpg

The Italian takes the 16 pointts at the top and moves to 38 points in total surpassing Brändle who moves to 36 points with a 3rd place finish at the top.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p9.jpg

The accelerations sent tremors down the spine of the break as Chhetri was dropped and is now 1’20” behind the break. The gap at the top is 5’18”.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p10.jpg

As the break reaches the bottom of the descent pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Chhetri finds his way back to the group. Sauber hoping that he can keep up now, they have options the further into the race we get!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p11.jpg

As the break enters the the bottom of the second climb the gap has been reduced to 4’22”. So far they seem to lose a lot of time on the flats but regain it on the climbs. As halfway up the climb the gap is back to being well over 6 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p12.jpg

1,5kms from the top of the 20km climb the racing for the KoM points begins as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Johannessen opens the party with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle in tow.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p13.jpg

The Italian proves the strongest yet again. As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle goes all the way down in fifth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro is now in second place with 52 points, just one more good climb and he’s looking primed for the polkadots. The gap to the pack is 5’37” at the top of the mountain.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p14.jpg

A bit of trouble for the break though as the group has kind of fallen apart with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Costagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Pruus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Juul-Jensen being really far down the road now. Ahead of them we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Antunes who have also lost contact. They make it back at the points sprint with 96kms to go.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p15.jpg

In the peloton it is mainly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Karatsivis doing the work for now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Zumer next in line.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p16.jpg

And as the break reaches the foot of the third climb of the day Port du Bales pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Robov leads them into it. With a gap that’s currently down to just 2’43”.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p17.jpg

In the pack we can see that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Khederi has been working hard to keep the breakaway within reach on this climb, they have not increased their gap which has been the norm on the climbs so far.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p18.jpg

However the pace at the front has been increased in reply to the extra work in the pack as we can see that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Robov has to say goodbye alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Pruus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Juul-Jensen.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p19.jpg

The pace claims another victim as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Costagli has also fallen off the front group. There’s 3km to the top.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p20.jpg

The front group has split in two as the pace becomes too hot too handle for a bunch of riders. The front group now consists of: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro who’s setting the pace, he wants that jersey! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Simon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Hoem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Raileanu and the Sauber duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Frankiny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p21.jpg

In the pack there’s also action with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas trying to improve his GC position.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p22.jpg

He’s joined by a lot of the favourites who is really trying to put pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun under pressure: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Alarcon and more importantly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo all make the move to see what the helpers of Popo4ever have in store!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p23.jpg

The move is closed down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun himself but at the cost of his helpers, there might be something to look for here as we approach the finish. 31kms to go most of them uphill!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p24.jpg

While that happened pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro went on his own to secure his points in the climbers competition. And has put a gap of close to a minute into his fellow breakaway contenders, maybe a move for the stage win?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p25.jpg

However after a few kilometres of ascending from the Italian he is reconnected with a trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Simon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Hoem.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p26.jpg

As the break starts the ascent of the last categorized climb before the finish pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Simon goes for an attack. The rest of the front group all reply without issue, but Fabbro decides to use the momentum and continues his attack dropping the Spaniard in the process.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p27.jpg

With 5km to the top only img]https://pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png[/IMG] Rhim is able to keep up with Fabbro but even that is shortlived as the Italian reaggresses and drops the American, he wants it all to himself.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p28.jpg

In the meantime the favourites have started to work their magic and have created a gap to the rest of the pack. Kraftwerk working hard to close it down before it becomes too late to keep pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera in the mix.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p29.jpg

The hard work of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Arndt and Nerz means that they make contact.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p30.jpg

With 8kms to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo tries another move and this time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun answers immediately and no gaps are created.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p31.jpg

In the meantime Fabbro crosses the summit first and completes his heist he won all four mountain summits today. The Italian has a short descent before he has to finish the job on the final short climb to the top he has 6kms to go and a gap of 30 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim, the favourites are over 4 minutes down the Perysourde this one is ripe for the taking for the Italian!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p32.jpg

Right as the peloton reaches the top of the Peyresourde pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo makes another move and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun follows.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p33.jpg

Together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane they get a small gap to the rest of the field.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p34.jpg

In the meantime pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro crosses the Flamme Rouge and start the celebrations of an immaculate solo win! What a day! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rhim comes in at second place. Good ride from the American as well!
The sprint for third place is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Raileanu in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Hoem and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p35.jpg

The group of the GC leaders was reeled in but Padun does not care and wants to go alone to manifest a magnificent GC victory.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p36.jpg

And there is your winner of the 2022 Tour d’Andorra pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Mark Padun, what a victory for him as he also secures the green alongside the GC!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p37.jpg

The polka dots are on the back of stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro who also improves to a 1th in the GC after a magnificent solo ride.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S5/p38.jpg

The teams classicifation is taken by the strong Kraftwerk team despite no rider in the top 10 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera landing in a disappointing 11th in the GC.
That’s it for this season’s coverage of the race!
