Tour d’Andorra – Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/S3.png

As we get ready to start the third stage which is another mountainous endeavour of 136km that includes two category 1 climbs, a category 2 climb as well as a mountain top finish, yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Henao is the first rider to attempt to make it into the break. The keep in mind the initial ascent percentage is 6.4%! Tough start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/1.jpg

After the next 5kms have gone some really interesting riders have made it into the break! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro are both riders with GCs ambitions and have decided to that their best shot at those is to make it into the break. Mas currently sits at 14th in the GC 3’03” after yellow jersey Talansky, while Fabbro sits in 20th at 4’42” down. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Kaloniatis & homeriderpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Garibian are the other two riders in their group.
Further down the mountain big pre-race favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz has also made it into the break so massive Carapaz finds himself in 29th in the GC at 5’16” after Talansky. He’s currently sat alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rodriguez Galindo
The final riders trying to make it into the break are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Blikra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Iversen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Besada. The agp with 129 to go to the peloton is 3’25” so chances are that this is our break for the day. Whether or not they will all reach the top together is the big question!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/2.jpg

With 5km to the top the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle group is still yet to make contact with the front group. In the front group the weak climbers have been dropped it now consists of: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Henao & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rodriguez Galindo. With the summit being withing 3km now this is the prime moment for Henao to grab important KoM points as Rochas didn’t have the energy to make today’s break.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Henao are the only two riders that seem interested in the KoM points. Henao is first to the sprint thus increasing his gap. In the process they did accumulate a 1 minute gap to Fabbro and Carapaz. Galindo is stuck behind Fabbro and Carapaz.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/4.jpg

Halfway through the descent, the group has been recombined. Furthermore pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Blikra & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Brändle have finally made contact with the front group. 95km to go, the gap to the peloton is 3’38”. In the peloton the work is primarily done by Jura, Bralirwa and Popo4ever.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/5.jpg

The points sprint was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Henao while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz picked up the other points, and more importantly for them, bonus seconds to try and salvage their GC ambitions.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/6.jpg

The cat 2 climb is contested by the newcomers to the break, neither currently have any points but it doesn’t look like Henao will be able to beat them! And he doesn’t but even with his third place on the top, he is still 18 points ahead of Rochas.
15km to the next climb 42 to the mountain finish. Gap to the peloton increased to 4’12”
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/7.jpg

Henao is the only one interested in contesting for the sprint points, he was 5th in the competition going into today and as things stand he is now on track to take the green jersey ahead of tomorrow’s MTT , pending stage winner! Carapaz picks up another 4 bonus seconds, while Fabbro picks up 2. In the pack Volcanica has become the pace setters, maybe Quintana finally have the legs to produce a big result today?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/9.jpg

Towards the top of the final category 1 climb it seems like Henao has overextended his boundaries and he’s currently exploded and is losing contact with the front group at a rapid pace, and there’s still 3kms to the top!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/10.jpg

Accelerations from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz have exploded the front group, whether or not the descent will bring them back together time will tell but it seems like it’s time for the big guns to come out and play, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro able to keep up with the two!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/11.jpg

In the pack 5th in the GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Alarcon makes a move, no one seems to be interested in following him for now though! The accelerated pace has also caused a split in the pack most notably: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Zimmermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Spilak and Rikunov. Some big helpers lost for Padun! Alacorn’s move was quickly shutdown by the working teams at the front and nothing was gained from it.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/12.jpg

At the foot of the final climb the front three has a gap of a little over 1’40 but there’s action in the pack now!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Quintana attacks from the foot of the climb he knows he has to make a massive move to get back into contention! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Arndt follows.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/14.jpg

The fireworks continue as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo follows the attacks and joins the two others!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Like we have seen on the other day Oomen is very willing to reel the other favourites back into the pack. He has no workers to do it for him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Talansky’s reaping all the benefits, the aging captain can’t keep up with the moves but is able to race defensively just fine at old age!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo attacks, which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Quintana replies instantly to but the Kraftwerk man stationed to cover for Ranaweera is unable to follow, maybe we see them try to force the issue in the favourites group! The front three is in reach for the two favourites now!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/17.jpg

Madrazo flies past the break and has displaced Quintana. His gap to the favourites group is close to a minute now! 6kms to the top this could be majestic for the Spanish legend!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/18.jpg

Madrazo keeps increasing his gap to the leaders but now there’s more action in the group!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane facilitates an attack on the yellow jersey the Eritrean is a little under two minutes after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Talansky who is following this move. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen are also in this group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Quintana is paying the price for his overzealous attempt at the bottom and is currently tumbling down the mountain it feels like! They’re 1’11” behind Madrazo!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Talansky has cracked it’s bye bye yellow for him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane has gotten contact to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/21.jpg

With 1.6km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun joins the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane group and they have Madrazo in sight! The Spaniard’s lead is just 34 seconds now!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/22.jpg

As Madrazo coasts to victory the chasers try to make up any gap they can!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S3/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun’s in second place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas who concludes a long day in the break with a stage podium and renewed hope in the GC fight! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun’s the new man in the yellow jersey, he also takes the lead in the points! Talansky still in second place in the GC!
