Tour d’Andorra – Stage 1

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/s1.png

Welcome to Andorra, once home to a prominent MG team but now they just host a very mountainous stage race!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/1.jpg

The first riders of the stage to try for the break are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Vine & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Adria
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/2.jpg

They’re followed by another group of attacks by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Watson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Iversen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Miquel & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Ariesen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/3.jpg

The initial group of riders is not very strong and this prongs another set of attacks from stronger names across the field, especially BWT are trying to make a break for it with Pernsteiner and Brändle trying to join teammate Vine in the front. The Austrian stage racer finds himself in a group with teammates Robov and Ahmad Zamri as well. The instructions were clear in the bus this morning it seems! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Rochas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Rodriguez Galindo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Govekar are the final riders in that group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/4.jpg

More attempts are made and Pernsteiner is stuck in the pack that with 160 to go have let the break go, the groups haven’t combined yet but sit at a little over 1”30 to the pack.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/5.jpg

The groups combine after the first sprint with a 3-minute gap to the peloton. The sprint was won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Watson 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Adria third.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/6.jpg

With a little over 100km to go the pack is starting to reel the breakaway in, as the gap that was 4 minutes at one point is down to around 3½ minutes. Despite having four riders in the break BWT is not interested setting the pace. In the pack it is a mixed bag of teams pulling.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/7.jpg

Ariesen wins the sprint 2nd sprint of the day with Watson and Rochas taking the other points, in the meantime the pack has gotten the gap under 2 minutes as the break is starting on the first climb shortly after the intermediate sprint.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/8.jpg

With 3km to the top of the Cat 2. Climb the break manages to keep their gap around the 3-minute mark, remember there is an insanely long descent to the foot of the next climb after they reach the top, it’s all about getting to the top with the group!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/9.jpg

Watson takes the KoM surprisingly but a lot work done by Rochas to tire out the group was all in vain as he fails to get any points at the summit. Instead there’s now a split in the front group, that means that Govekar, Robov, Brändle, Ariesen, Vine, Iversen and Miquel most likely are done for the day.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/10.jpg

I was wrong they make it back to the front group at the bottom of the next climb which is a category 1 climb! The gap to the now 51 man peloton is a little under 2 minutes.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/11.jpg

Some big names have been dropped on the descent and are currently 1’30” behind the main peloton, these are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Campero pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Frankiny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Nerz & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga. They have their work cut out for them to make it back to peloton!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/12.jpg

With 5km to the top and 40 the finish line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Schmid has been setting the pace in the pack for a while and is slowly but surely starting to reel in the breakaway, strong work from the youngster! Gap is now just over a minute!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/13.jpg

As the fight for the points at the top of climb starts, Brändle and Robov call it quits and get dropped from the front group!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/14.jpg

In the meantime Watson gets passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Fabbro, who is the first favourite to try to set race on fire!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/15.jpg

Fabbro’s flying! He has put a minute into the other favourites who have upped the pace in the peloton that’s now been reduced to 31 riders. In the meantime pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Adria reaches the summit first infront of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Ahmad Zamri! Both of them are on 18 points! Brändle somehow has contact with the front group for the descent! The final 30kms to go now!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/16.jpg

Fabbro delivers Robov back to his mates in the front group, the gap to the favourites is down to 46 seconds with 23km to go! Did Fabbro overreach?
Nerz, Frankiny and Campero are in a group that’s currently 2 minutes down on the peloton, their efforts on the final climb are going to be race defining if they want to have any hopes for the GC fight! The rest of the previously mentioned dropped names are even further down the road!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/17.jpg

As the break reaches the foot of the final climb, the gap is too small for comfort for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Ahmad Zamri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Barbero who set up an attack! The quickly get a 30 second gap to the breakaway the gap to the peloton is around 1 minute, when will the favourites strike? 15 km to go!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/18.jpg

With 13km to go the break is eaten up, the 3 riders are still a minute out front but, but the favourites are starting to race now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa are the first ones to make a move for it! Kraftwerk with a big presence in the front group, probably riding for Arndt and Ranaweera now that Nerz is in a group behind!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/19.jpg

Fabbro tries to follow but he cannot!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/20.jpg

With 11km to go everyone has been reeled in and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen attacks! This time it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Arndt that answers, as the other helpers have been used up he now has to work for Ranaweera! The attack amounts to nothing but wasted energy for Oomen, this is gold for the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/21.jpg

With 9kms to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa sets ups another move with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Arndt in tow! The group fails to generate a gap as the other favourites simply raise the pace in the chase group. 7.8km to go!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/22.jpg

With 6.5km to the finish line it’s a disaster for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz the Crabbe captain is getting dropped on sheer pace, alongside Fabbro who’s earlier efforts are now being punished.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/23.jpg

As more and more attacks keep coming in the front group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Quintana one of the race favourits in Quintana is too isolated and has been dropped as well!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/24.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Padun who is the main facilitator of this attack as we can also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues trying to follow. 5.5 to go!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/25.jpg

The Belgian fan was running along cheering for Padun for a while but probably hoping that Oomen could close the gap but with 4.6 to go Padun has created a 23 second gap to the 13 man peloton!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/26.jpg

It’s an extinction ride behind in the chasing group as Padun just keeps on trucking on towards a majestic victory, 2.4 to go and the gap is around 30 seconds!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/27.jpg

And some major names are now going to be in massive trouble! Arndt and Ranaweera have been dropped and so has pre-race favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo is also in this group together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Mas. Not the greatest day as they are currently 31 seconds behind the chase group!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/28.jpg

With 1.5km to the summit, Padun has been eaten up by the chase group that consists of:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Min, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Stüssi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov. The latter two seem like they might be struggling to hold on!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues have been dropped from the group and are currently 40 seconds behind it while the group with Madrazo and Ranweera has dropped Mas are 25 seconds further down the road!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/29.jpg

As we enter final 500 meters of the race the front group has been reduced to just Talansky, Penasa and Padun who have to duke it out for the victory!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/30.jpg

The American has already dropped Penasa it’s looking like a massive victory for Glanbia with 300 meters to go!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/31.jpg

The American is way too tired to celebrate but what a massive win for his team! Padun second and Penasa third! Oomen, must be annoyed at having used so much energy earlier on to try to keep the stage under control but at the end of the day he could be seen as a winner compared to the likes of Madrazo and Ranweera, we will have to wait and see how bad the time loss is!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Andorra/S1/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Ranaweera lose just over 2 minutes, while the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Berhane & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues limit their losses to under 1’40”. The biggest losers today must be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carapaz who both lose more than 4 minutes!
