La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 5
Imladrik
An ITT to win it all! After three days for the sprinters, the rouleurs can now enter the fray, or come back in, as most of them already shone at the beginning of the week.
It should be one of them who’ll take the GC, after the 21 km long flat time trial in the Gabonese capital. That is, if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen, who are for now at the first to places of the podium, don’t have a very good day that’d allow them to keep their advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319105333_1.jpg

The first part of the race will be for those who have been dropped in the finale of the third stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde is the lanterne rouge, and the first to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319110655_1.jpg

His first reference time is 25’24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini is not well placed in the GC, which is quite normal, but he can enjoy his polkadots jersey on the road, a jersey he won as soon as in the 2nd stage! He wasn’t really threatened the other days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319111538_1.jpg

We have to say, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde’s time is quite good, as the Belgian still is in the hot seat after 30 riders. Even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Perez can’t beat him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319111650_1.jpg

Some decent time-trialists are on the road now, but all of them are more than 2 minutes behind Halvorsen in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Navardauskas is the first to pass under the 25 minutes mark, with 70 riders who still have to begin their ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319112338_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cardona has lead the young rider classification until he lost time during stage 3. He could take it again, if he can make up the 1’30 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Kanter’s on him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319112458_1.jpg

He actually finishes 2nd in the provisional classification, 6 seconds off Navardauskas. Seing the intermediate times of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Nzafashwanayo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Miquel, that’d be a first leap in the classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Andersen is the first of the favorites to go. In the GC, he’s 1’10 behind Halvorsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319112927_1.jpg

And indeed, the Dane seems to be determined: at the intermediate chrono, he’s already 10 seconds faster everyone.
Cardona will be less happy: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Gonzalez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser didn’t lose enough time for him to pass them in the GC. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Evenepoel, who might be one of the favorites for the young rider classification, is on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319113303_1.jpg

His main concurrent should be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Bjerg.

Andersen sets a new best time at 24’33. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Vanderpool began their ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319113446_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Cosnefroy did too.

Andersen’s hope of a win are already down, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Wohler was fastest (24’25. Cosnefroy and Vanderpool were even fastest in the intermediate chrono.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Bjerg isn’t, but he seems set up to consolidate his advantage on Evenepoel, and his 2nd place, if by a surprise he couldn’t take the first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319113809_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas is not far from him. He arrives 4 seconds late to Cosnefroy, who is the new leader (24’15).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319113828_1.jpg

The Frenchman is now the virtual GC leader, also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Frison is already 16 seconds off at the intermediate chrono. He’ll probably lose time to Cosnefroy also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114140_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aab.png Paillot, in the other hand, lives up to his NC jersey. He is the new leader at the intermediate chrono, and of course, if he finishes first, he’ll lead the provisional GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114238_1.jpg

He can even lose 5’’ in the second part of the race, but with other favorites coming behind, that’d be ill advised.

Not the best day it seems for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Sterobo, as he’s 25 seconds of at half stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114422_1.jpg

There are 15 riders left to pass the chrono, we can have a look at the provisional lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114457_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Rekita is 3’’ behind Cosnefroy at this point. If he can make them up, he’ll take the lead in the GC.
Paillot’s second part was not that good. He still takes the lead (24’14), but those behind will be happy to see that he’s not that far.

And indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Dennis is already 5 seconds fastest at half stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114741_1.jpg

Rekita’s second part wasn’t that good: he’s 4th for now, 8’’ behind Paillot. Still, that should be enough to grab at least a top 10 in the GC.

The Australians are strong in this time-trial: pre-race favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Durbridge leads the race at the intermediate chrono, 1 second fastest than Dennis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319114945_1.jpg

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Dunbar is 5’’ of. Should it be confirmed, he’d be passed by Dennis in the GC.
8 km to ride for them.

One that knows he has great chances is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Thomas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115152_1.jpg

And the Frenchman know how to take its chances! He’s the new leader at the chrono.
It’s not the case for the stage 1 winner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Wolf, who already is 23 seconds off, and will lose some time if he can’t go faster.

10 riders are left to finish, Dunbar is closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115343_1.jpg

Dunbar loses 9 seconds, but Durbridge takes the lead. He has to be 5 second faster than Thomas (who’s coming behind) if he want to win this race.
He’s not. With a strong ride, the Frenchman takes the hot seat. He’s under the 24 minutes mark (23’55) and has an 11’’ lead on Durbridge. Seing that all those who are ahead of him in the GC are more than 1 minute of at mid race, he only has to wait for Wolf to celebrate his win!
The German loses 40 seconds. Thomas will win the Tropicale, as we’re waiting for the sprinters to arrive.

Speaking of which, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen is in his last kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115823_1.jpg

The Norwegian is no time trialist, and he nearly loses 3 minutes. But he’ll be happy with his sprinting results anyway.

Benjamin Thomas takes the stage and the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115846_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115856_1.jpg

We said it earlier, Baroncini easily took the best climber classification with a smart ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115903_1.jpg

Halvorsen’s got the point classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115911_1.jpg

We omitted to give news about the young rider classification, but Bjerg wasn’t really threatened by a promising Evenepoel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S5/20230319115919_1.jpg

And Zara adds to its tally with the team classification.
