Welcome in Fougamou for the 3rd stage of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo. The race begins in the center of Gabon, on the shores of Ngounié river. It will end some 111 km later, in Lambaréné, on the shores of Ogoué river.
The stage is even flatter than yesterday, with a lone cat. 4 which won’t threaten Baroncini, who’s a solid leader of the mountain classification.
There are also 4 intermediate sprints, and 12 bonus seconds to take for valiant breakaway riders.
The trap today might be in the small bump near the end of the stage.
The favorite’s list is quite the same as yesterday. Howard, especially, will have to do better, after wasting his team’s work yesterday.
Quite an astonishing view at the beginning of the race. Some 30 seconds behind Meyer, who opens the race, we have the yellow jersey attacking along Nzafashwanayo.
The explanation is quite easy: the first sprint is only some kilometers away.
Halvorsen is caught some time later, but he remains ready for the sprint. Meyer passed in first, but Halvorsen and Vingerling are coming fast behind.
Of the two, Vingerling is the strongest.
The two sprinters wait for the peloton, and Meyer remains alone at the front with 94 km to go (47 km before the next sprint).
De Tier and Haavardsholm were allowed to go. They are 30 seconds behind Meyer, who is 1’24 ahead of the pack.
Indosat, Red Bull and Zara are trying to control, and they don’t let anybody else go at the front.
We fast forward to the second intermediate sprint. The battle is tough, and Haavardsholm is the strongest, tough Meyer was well launched by De Tier.
The break’s lead is 2 minutes with 45 km to go. The next interesting to come is the lone mountain sprint (cat. 4, 4,2 km, 4,2%). As all will be decided tomorrow, Baroncini didn’t bother to try to enter the break.
And indeed, there is no really sprint. The penultimate intermediate sprint, in Massika, will probably be more contested.
De Tier’s lead out works well this time, and Meyer takes the 3 points. There are 30 km left to ride, and a last sprint halfway in.
The peloton is closing in, but Meyer is a fairly decent rouleur, he tries to go alone.
At the 20 km mark, he still has a 1 minute lead.
Indosat and Zara are determined to make the catch.
The Australian (another one!) resists to the sprinting peloton to take the last intermediate sprint.
Wippert and Jakobsen take the remaining points.
Meyer keeps a small lead under the 10 km banner. As they try to make the catch, we can see that Red Bull once again leaves its leader in the wind. Maybe they are troubled by the color of his jersey.
The catch is made 5 km later. 1,7 km before the uncategorized climb (800Â m, 5,4% with a maximum at 9%).
The GC favorites ( Rekita, Dennis, Durbridge…) are close to the front. They’ve recognize the stage and don’t want to be caught in a split.
2 km left. Evenepoel seemed to want to try something, but he stopped his effort. Still a messy organization we have here.
Evenepoel Gani Halvorsen Suryadi Kanter Howard Wippert Bogdanovics Habtom
Halvorsen begins his sprint with 1,2 km to go.
Under the flamme rouge, we can see Indosat’s train broken once again. Howard is 100 meters behind his leadout. Halvorsen, Kanter and Wippert are at the front. Howard, Bogdanovics, Habtom, Jakobsen and Thomas are in the 2nd group.
600 m. Hard to make a prediction at this point.
400 m. Wippert is the fastest in the first group. Bogdanovics, Habtom and Jakobsen are the fastest in the second group.
200 m. The second group won’t make the catch with the first four, who resist admirably.
And this time, Halvorsen takes it after a long, long sprint! He’ll strengthen his jersey. Then come Kanter, Suryadi and Wippert.
Jakobsen is the best of the rest. Then we have Howard, Bogdanovics, Habtom and Thomas.
Bertilsson is 10th, ahead of Alaphilippe and Bewley.
There was a split in the end of the race, and a gap of 1’10 is given after the 63rd rider. No GC favorite is caught, but Cardona will lose the best young rider jersey.
Wippert climbs up to 3rd in the GC, while Kanter takes the lead in the young rider classification.
Indosat still leads the team classification.
