La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 2
Imladrik
Between the two individual time trials which open and close the Tropicale, there are three sprinting stages. The first one is a 160 km long race between Mounana and Koulamoutou. We’ll begin in the province of Haut-Ogooué, where we already were yesterday, to finish in the province of Ogooué-Lolo.

This stage might already change the GC, as a sprinter (25 seconds max can be earned in the finish) or a breakaway rider (there are 3 sprint, each of them offers 3 seconds) might have an opportunity to take the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315171443_1.jpg

There are also 25 points to take for the best climber classification, in what is the bumpier stage of the race.

The first categorized climb begins only 12 km after the startline, so they’ll be competition for the breakaway!
This seems settled after 10 km of riding: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Debusschere and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Bayer open the way, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lec.png Boileau, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Mulubrhan behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315174027_1.jpg

None of them can take the GC from the intermediate sprints.

1,7 km before the cat. 2 climb (9,4 km, 4,2% with a maximum at 10%). The peloton already is at a fast pace, very stretched. They come back fast at the break, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku tries to survive!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315174402_1.jpg

He’s joined later by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Bayer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini. All the others are caught by the peloton, who let them go. The leaders have a 1’20 lead with 4 km left to climb.

Indosat and Red Bull are the team setting the pace in the peloton.

At the top of the climb, the ranking is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Bayer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315174552_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Vandevelde take the remaining points from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini is once again the strongest, edging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku in the intermediate sprint in Matsako. The gap is up to 4 mnutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315174729_1.jpg

The next categorized climb comes right behind. It’s a cat. 4 climb, 2,2 km long, with a 3µ gradient, which doesn’t reflect the two 7% parts.
And though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku really tries to shine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Baroncini definitely has better legs. He now leads the best climber classification, with 15 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315175038_1.jpg

The main teams chasing still are Indosaat (Arif Prayogo, Yudha), Zara (Vandevelde, Castrillo) and Red Bull (Consonni, Räim).

Fourth time’s a charm for Awuku, who finally is first at the sprint in Mana-Mana.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315175259_1.jpg

90 km left to ride, the gap is 3’20 and we already are in the last climb of the day (cat. 2, 4,4 km, 5,7%, 16% max). After that, it’s bumpy for 30 more kilometers, and then flattish for last 50 km.

There’s a hard fight for the 10 points, but they go to Baroncini, who will wear the polka dots tomorrow (and the day after, as the lone cat. 4 climb won’t threaten him).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315175541_1.jpg

The same man takes the last sprint, after a downhill section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315180546_1.jpg

Now to the finish! The break’s lead is down to 2 minutes.

Fast forward to he last 20 km, the gap is around the minute. Baroncini and Awuku try a last attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315180903_1.jpg

And after a very strong day at the front of the race, Baroncini is the last one to be caught. The sprinters now have 8 km to organize.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315181014_1.jpg

Halfway to the finish line, we have a train for Red Bull in the center (Evenepoel, Räim, Halvorsen). They’re followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Habtom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Bogdanovics and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Wippert.
On the right, it’s more confusing: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Arif Prayogo is ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Castrillo, who seems ready to lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Howard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Hofstetter and Jakobsen are in the Aussie’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315181432_1.jpg

2,7 km to go. Surprisingly, Red Bull’s train dismantled. Halvorsen now is behind Bogdanovics.
Zara has its train. For Indosat, Gani already is in the wind, which isn’t good for Howard.

One kilometer later, it’s quite messy:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Bertilsson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Barbier

Flamme rouge! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Räim began his sprint without looking for his leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Hofstetter, in the other hand, is well followed by Jakobsen. The others are 100 meters behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315185654_1.jpg

800 meters. Howard, Halvorsen and Bogdanovics still are behind the leaders, while Jakobsen remains in Hofstetter’s wheel. They have to pass Räim to not be boxed in though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315185827_1.jpg

500 meters. Jakobsen is released and tries to pass Räim. Bogdanovics is very fast some meters behind. Halvorsen is the fastest of them all, but he’s been in the wind for some time now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315185953_1.jpg

200 m. Jakobsen is fading, Bogdanovics, Habtom and Halvorsen are still strong. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Bewley, on the left, is the fastest of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315190023_1.jpg

And the victory is for… Jakobsen!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315190209_1.jpg

He rewards his train with a strong sprint, over Halvorsen, whose finish was messier, but he still remained very strong. Bogdanovics is 3rd, and Vingerling is 4th. It’s time to take the calculator to know who’ll take the GC lead.

Habtom comes in 5th, ahead of Bewley, Bertilsson and Wippert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315190416_1.jpg

Colbrelli and Barbier round off the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Tropicale/S2/20230315190515_1.jpg

The time for us to make our calculations, and the organizers already announced it: Halvorsen takes the yellow jersey, ahead of Jakobsen and Wolf.
He also leads the points classification.
Baroncini is the best climber.
Cardona the best young rider.
Indosat still at the head of the team classification.

We can still expect a mass sprint tomorrow, with a shorter stage and a small trap near the end.
