Philadelphia International discussions
Imladrik
2nd year in a row as a PTHC race for the Philadelphia International Championship, a race that has been raced since 2010, formerly in the HC and the C2HC levels.

Though there are plenty of small bumps in the roads around Philadelphia, the race is rated flat and should favor the sprinters, who indeed came in big and strong number. But a late attack can – it already happened – surprise the peloton and take the win; the sprinting teams will have to keep their eyes open in the last kilometers!

Let’s have a look at who is here and not on the Tour de France. First of all, the sprinters.

Sprinters paradise, isn’t it? Four men must have the best bets: Huski’s Grosu will look to continue on his decent Giro form, ISA’s Ewan has the best lead-out here, with the German champion Degenkolb, who won several stages in the Vuelta earlier this year, there’s not too much to say about the world champion Gaviria? Maybe that he doesn’t have much of a lead-out, but his sprinting science might be sufficient today. And at least, he has a great chasing team behind him. Finally, Ahlstrand is, for Volcania, the sole PCT rider present in the top 4 list.

But those are not the only one to be able to take the win on the finish line. Another PCT rider who might want to take a shining victory by upsetting the PT sprinters is Kennaugh, who returns after his last year victory, though for another team. With only Dzamastagic as a lead-out though, he’ll probably have to take someone else’s wheel.
While Herklotz is riding the Tour de France, Demare definitely has the skillset to shine in such a race. And Steimle, who also did good in the Vuelta, is quite a decent lead-out for the Frenchman, if it comes to a sprint.
And there is also Groenewegen, who can never be ruled out of any sprint, and come with a team ready to work for him.

But outside of this bunch of strong sprinters there are… yes, outsiders! Those will want to repeat some of the results of other races this year, first of them Milano – San Remo. No Poggio here to attack, but enough bumps to upset the sprinters!

Looks like Aegon went with 2 options! Van der Hoorn indeed has the fighting spirit and the abilities on the flat that could help today, though he probably lacks in sprinting capacities to win this race. Varga might be a better bet. Though his team seems to be built around Lutsyshyn, they might want to disrupt the race, either to take the win or to give the Ukrainian the best position to take a good result.
In any case, most of the teams in this list have a sprinter able to compete for a top 10, if not for the win. So will there be a late attack? We’ll have to let the race unfold to find out!

Pretty stacked field as expected, hopefully means Howard won’t have a train and can have the freedom to chase wheels in the finale. A top-5 here would be a dream!

Thanks for the preview!

Two strings, Kennaugh and Dzama, lets set if one of them pays off!

4 to go for Demare!

This one looks good for him with decent chances for random splits over the undulating terrain, as long as his positioning is solid he can save more energy than the rest of the field and hopefully use that to his advantage.

Minali not even in the favourites list in this race is no surprise. Don't expect much. Would be awesome if Stoltz tries something!

Thanks for the preview Smile

Yeesh, that's a tough field. I reckon Silvestre is around the 8th to 10th best sprinter, so anything in the Top 10 would be fine, but obviously I'm hoping he can somehow wheelsurf his way to something even better. Finishing outside of the Top 10 would be disappointing, we need every point we can get in the promotion race. So we at least need to finish ahead of Bonifazio and Jakobsen Pfft

Luis Leon Sanchez
Goodness me, that’s a rather strong start list

Have to hope for a minor miracle from Jakobsen if it comes to a sprint or some luck from the breakaway/late attack.

Here’s hoping Wink

Thank you for the preview and good luck to all!

Missed the preview. But we've screwed up anyway, so it's not that bad. Big one for Silvestre, congrats!

While I will not actively root against my competitors for promotion, it is not mandatory to congratulate them, so there Pfft

Bonifazio doing much better than expected really. Thanks for the report Imladrik!

Congrats on a fabulous win Cunego! Dzama tried his best to make something happen but tried a bit too far out but recovered for a 15th! Kennaugh in 10th at least combines for a solid combination of points for us although I would have liked to see him higher in the final standings!

Thanks for the report!

Luis Leon Sanchez
A tough field for Jakobsen but hurts a bit with him 17th and someone like Bouhanni 7th.

Thanks for the report and congrats on the win Cunego!

Some points via Stoltz and Minali. That's a success I guess.

Congrats to cunego and thanks for the report Smile

I guess it was about time for Silvestre to score a big result.
Congrats cunego Smile

Very bad result from Grosu in a race where we needed points.

Yessssssss! Finally Silvestre breaks through. I was almost ready to forget the race when the split was mentioned with him on the wrong side, but he recovered, found the right position and did what he does so well, but so rarely so far this season: have the right timing and use his great backup stats to overtake everyone.

This is absolutely massive for our promotion battle. Thanks for the congrats everyone, appreciate it Smile

cio93
Congrats cunego! Awesome timing there.
Looking forward to race against you a lot more next season. Pfft

Arnaud did very well in that sprint. There's definitely a world in which he can win this, but as the immediately post-finish screenshot shows, there's also a world in which he drops off the podium again.
And particularly when looking at where some bigger favorites finished, despite solid positioning, third place here is really impressive.

Too bad we got no depth points here, but this race complements whatever we'll get out of the TdF nicely to make a push for the PT podium.

Thank you for reporting this, Imladrik!

roturn
Bad positioning isn`t ideal as a sprinter. Your speed in the end will be high but no chance to shine anymore.
Normally this was a strength of Groenewegen, but unfortunately he missed it today.

Thanks for the report and congrats Cunego. Silvestre with the biggest engine.

Congrats cunego!

Fabulous result from Vesely. The team is really coming alive in the past few months and in PTHC races specifically.

Thanks for the report Imladrik
