Scandinavia Open - Stage 3
Imladrik
Last day of racing here in Scandinavia, more precisely in Sweden, as we crossed the border to test the hills of the county of Jämtland, in the center west of the country. The stage is 195 km long, even though the departure and the arrival are separated by less than 20 km. We even cross the departure line once again near the end of the race.

All classifications should be very open, so this should be an interesting day. It could also be the occasion for the distanced riders, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman, to go for stage glory.

42 mountain points to take today, so that’ll play a role in the stage. But even though there are only three category 2 and two category 3 climbs, the rest of the stage certainly isn’t flat or easy. Neither is the final climb.

After 10 km done, the break looks like settled with 6 men at the front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Robeet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Müller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Lafay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem, Majka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz.
The leader of the mountain classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis, isn’t here.

Tinkoff, Los Pollos, Polar and ISA are controlling the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz is the only one interested in the first intermediate spritn, at the 22nd kilometer. 172 km to go, the gap is 1’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301133830_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem is dropped a few minutes later, so they’re only 5 at the front now.

ISA leads a very stretched peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301134120_1.jpg

150 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman used a split in the pack to attack. He’s with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda, 40 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Majka. They have 23 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Lafay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Müller, and 50 seconds on the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301134418_1.jpg

Categorized climb in 5 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda takes the 10 points. He should wait for Majka; Kelderman and Vakoc. The others have been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301134524_1.jpg

The peloton is already down to 168 men.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Lafay managed to resist to the peloton, and is now between the pack and the leaders. He finished by join the head of the race.

The next points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman (16), ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda (18) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc (10). The Argentinian now leads the classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301135152_1.jpg

With 101 km to go, the gap is up to 5 minutes, with Isostar, EA, Lierse and King Power leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda takes 6 more points, for a total of 24. That’s 4 more than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301135459_1.jpg

85 km to go, the gazp is down to 2’42, with nobody sprinting in the 2nd intermediate sprint.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Lafay can’t hold on anymore.

In the mountain classification fight, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman is a bit naive and is again beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301140311_1.jpg

Still a category 2 to climb, so all is not lost for Kelderman.

Majka and Vakoc won’t come back, so the two continue together. 46 km to go, the gap with the peloton is 3 minutes.

Sepulveda seals his victory in the best climber classification. He clearly was the strongest today. The two are caught with 23 km to go, while, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts are dropped from the pack, down to 101 men.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301140519_1.jpg

11,4 km to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301140731_1.jpg

He gets a small gap at the 10 km mark, along pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Novak.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301140752_1.jpg

8,4 km to go, and we see the green jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney, chasing!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301140915_1.jpg

The gap is 28 seconds.

The catch is finally made at the 5 km mark. We can see the finishing climb on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141024_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich tries again! He brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141110_1.jpg

Behind, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz with the yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko.

3 km to go and they have a 24 seconds lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen couldn’t follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141259_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta is now leading the chase.

No change one kilometer later. The hardest part of the climb is only coming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141325_1.jpg

Last kilometer! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko are waiting for the right moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141415_1.jpg

600 m. Gidich can’t follow the pace any more. The pack has to react now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141535_1.jpg

400 m. They did! But Lopez and Herklotz seem to be the only ones with the legs to make the catch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141625_1.jpg

200 m. Herklotz is catching, but Phinney is in a great position now. The end is flatter…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141819_1.jpg

Phinney celebrates! If he wins, he’ll take the GC as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141843_1.jpg

And who else would it be? Phinney wins a second stage and the 2022 Scandinavia Open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301141942_1.jpg

Herklotz reacted a bit to late, and is only 2nd, a wheel ahead of Novak.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301142015_1.jpg

That could be a disappointing race for Lopez, who’s 4th of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301142044_1.jpg

Sosa is 5th, and he’ll keep his white jersey. Then we have Buchmann, Galta, Cort Nielsen, Lutsenko and Oomen to close the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S3/20230301142118_1.jpg

Thanks to the bonus at the end of the stage, Phinney beats Novak by 6 seconds, but the Lierse rider does keep his 2nd place.
Herklotz is 3rd, while Lutsenko fall at the foot of the podium, ahead of Lopez.

Two stage wins are enough for Phinney to also take the points classification.

Sepulveda dominated the break, and so he takes the best climber competition.

Sosa never was endangered in the youth classification.

Lierse has two riders in the top 10. Enough to be crowned best team.
