Scandinavia Open - Stage 2
Imladrik
2nd day of battle here in Norway for the Scandinavia Open, and that will be one for the punchers: 181 km of bumpy roads between Lillestrøm, not far from Oslo, and Grua, 48 km North. The catch is that the riders will successively do two circuits, one flatt-ish, but with two category 4 climbs and two uncategorized, but similar climbs, and then another one, with three category 3 climbs, plus the uncategorized finish, which is something like the half of the second cat. 3 climb.

28 points are here to be taken today, and also some nice bonus seconds, which could be enough for some riders to overcome the yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney.

It’s raining once again. This stage is everything you’d want to feel like in Belgium. Maybe It’ll be better around Grua, but that’ll be after two thirds of the race are done…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis is a strong puncher. He lost 1’12 yesterday, so he was allowed to go out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226214604_1.jpg

He should soon be caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Vlatos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin.
20 seconds behind these three, there is a group of 7: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Siddikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Robeet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png O'Shea, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink, Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov and Strakhov.

The peloton is not far behind, maybe not to pleased with this mix of rouleurs and punchers. And indeed, the group of 7 is caught soon enough, there are more attacks though?

We have to wait 27 km to see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis not alone anymore. I’m not sure his team liked this long solo ride. He’s been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem, Lammertink, Hofstede, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Restrepo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226215710_1.jpg

Don’t mind the sprint banner, we’ll get there.

The peloton is led by Grieg, Los Pollos and Polaris, 1 minute behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Vlatos is in between.

We’re 6 km of the 1st categorized climb, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz are also allowed to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis is tired after his show. He can’t hold in the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz is the first to cross the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226222450_1.jpg

In the peloton, the attacks are still going.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis managed to join, and we have 9 riders at the front with a 3 minutes lead. Gazelle, MOL, Puma, Evonik and Lierse are leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226222644_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis (him again!) recovered and easily wins the 1st intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226222758_1.jpg

104 km to go, the gap is 2’30.

Again an easy win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis at the 2nd cat. 4 climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz leads the classification for now, but the category 3 climbs are coming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226222945_1.jpg

And the Frenchman also wins the last intermediate sprint. He has to have good legs today!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226223203_1.jpg

The peloton keeps the break on a short leash, around 2’30. 65 km to go, we will now enter the 2nd, hardest part of the race.

It’s a real show of strength from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis to take 6 more points (11), ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva (5) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede (3). The Frenchman takes the lead of the provisional classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz is 2nd (8 points)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226223346_1.jpg

The break is down to 6 men, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem don’t seem able to come back.

In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Atkins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png O'Shea, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Verona and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Kwok are dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink does most of the work in the break, as we are approaching the 2nd category 3 summit, and a first passage at the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226223731_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede was perfectly launched by his teammate, and he takes 6 points (9). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva manages to jump pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis on the line. The Finn has 9 points, the Frenchman 13.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226223827_1.jpg

The peloton is less than 2 minutes behind now.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Kasperkiewicz didn’t manage to come back, and the trio doesn’t wait for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224104_1.jpg

30 km to go, the white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224214_1.jpg

This causes holes in the peloton, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Gerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre on the wrong side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224408_1.jpg

The yellow jersey’s group rides hard to catch Turgis’group, which doesn’t allow the others to come back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge are 1’16 behind, in a group of 90. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman’s group of 15 is 2 minutes behind the yellow jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224647_1.jpg

20 km to go, and the catch is made.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224719_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Novak is the first to launch an attack, 1,2 km before the last categorized summit. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224831_1.jpg

Evonik is chasing.

The Kazakh champion comes in first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226224917_1.jpg

New splits at the summit. The yellow jersey’s group has 40 seconds on a group of 24 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Fraile.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund will soon be dropped too.

10 km mark, and the three attacker are being caught, thanks to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita’s work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226225211_1.jpg

Phinney is safe inside for now.
Fraile’s group is 45 seconds behind. Inside we also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Skujins.
1’30 after the yellow jersey’s group come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Müller.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie are 2’09 late. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre already lost 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Novak isn’t tired! He attacks again, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226225512_1.jpg

8 km to go, and these 3 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan have a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226225701_1.jpg

Nobody wants to take the lead in the yellow jersey’s group, so the gap is growing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos takes matters in hands. That doesn’t seem like a wise idea, as the other teams still have many riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226225840_1.jpg

5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann escaped!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226225900_1.jpg

He’s caught soon enough, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is now leading the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230018_1.jpg

Flamme rouge! The quatuor still has a lead of 37 seconds, and the finish his hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230052_1.jpg

Buchmann would be the only one to take the leader’s jersey even without a gap, if he wins.

Too much efforts for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan, who is quickly dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230223_1.jpg

500 last meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann won’t win it. Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz seem to be ready.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230315_1.jpg

300 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko won’t be caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230402_1.jpg

And it’s a strong victory, without contest for the Kazakh champion. Novak will be 2nd, a deserved position as he greatly animated the ending.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230454_1.jpg

Buchmann holds on the 3rd place. The favorites are coming right behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230535_1.jpg

They’re more than 40 seconds late on Lutsenko, who should take the lead in the GC.
Herklotz is best of the rest, ahead of Lopez. Then the King Power duo, with Sosa and Gidich.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230627_1.jpg

Phinney only is 8th, ahead of Kwiatowski and Oomen, for a 2nd top 10 for Lierse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230734_1.jpg

Mohoric is 11th, followed by Cort Nielsen and Wirtgen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230819_1.jpg

Bad day for ELCO, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Spanopoulos is 14th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230910_1.jpg

And Tenorio beats Suskin for the top 15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S2/20230226230938_1.jpg

In the GC, Lutsenko takes the lead. But he only has 7 seconds on Novak and 13 on Phinney, so nothing is played yet.
The American will wear the green of the points classification tomorrow.
Turgis leads the mountain classification. Nobody could really beat him to it today.
Sosa leads the young rider classification, with more than a one minute lead on Foss and Giannoutsos.
King Power is the best team for now, but Lierse and MOL are close.

The race is far from finished! A last day of racing tomorrow will probably decide of all the final classification. Stay tuned!
