Scandinavia Open - Stage 1
Imladrik
Welcome in Femundsmarka national park, Norway, for the prologue of the Scandinavia Open. We’re 270 km North of Oslo, at the border with Sweden. It’s the traditional, uphill prologue we’ve seen the previous years, kind of a warm-up ahead of a hard race.

And we can already see what an event that is, with so many star rider present here in the far North. The time-trial world champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney, sure is the man to whatch and the main favorites, but with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Ganna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz (and quite some others), he’ll have to be at his best to come home with a victory.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226165129_1.jpg

The 2 first riders to go will get us an impression of what the race will be: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Zakarin is a pure puncher, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Postlberger is a pure time-trialist. Whose profile will suit this stage best? The hardest section seems to be the last kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226165715_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Postlberger is the best of the two. He’ll be our first reference, with a time of 9’40. He should easily be beaten by the greek time-trial champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Vlatos, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226165828_1.jpg

But he doesn’t. Very bad day for Vlatos, who’s 28 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Skaarseth, who is the new reference, with 9’28. The Ukrainian champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zmorka, is on the road and will aspire to do better.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170059_1.jpg

Yes! 9’21. He shares the hot seat with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Sipos.

So far, the stage seems to favor time-trialists who can decently climb. The good example is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf, who takes the lead, in the same time that the aforementioned riders.

Seeing this, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty can have some hope of a good result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170403_1.jpg

And indeed, he his 4 seconds faster than the others. And he’s the 20th to finish, so we can have a look at the stage situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170504_1.jpg

The Mexican champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado, also has a good profile for the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170618_1.jpg

We can’t really say the same about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Siddikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170722_1.jpg

Prado finishes 11 seconds slower than McNulty. Not too bad, I guess.

And another national champion is here, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich, who can show the Russian jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226170830_1.jpg

Nearly 50 riders are done, and I don’t think that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Kwok, the champion of Hong Kong, will change anything at the results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171002_1.jpg

But, as I watched his jersey, I missed the Portuguese champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, who took the hot seat, as exactly the 50th to finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171139_1.jpg

And it’s only to be dethroned by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Misbah, who sets a new time in 9’15. That’s a very good day for the Malaysian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Kwiatkowski is one of the GC favorites. He could do well today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171415_1.jpg

But in the end (it does matter), he’ll be disappointed, as with a time of 9’25, he’s 11 seconds of the pace.

Not much to say about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Hennis, but he sure has a nice NC jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171712_1.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Kennaugh took the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra does have what it takes to beat him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171753_1.jpg

The same can be said about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171809_1.jpg

None of them can take the lead, though.

So, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Keizer maybe?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226171932_1.jpg

He doesn’t. And as I definitely don’t have what it takes to know who will take the lead, I’ll just say that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Ioannidis now is on the hot seat, and show you the provisional classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172020_1.jpg

100 riders finished the prologue.

In theory, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos is better than his teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172203_1.jpg

But in Scandinavia, he can’t beat him.

The Greek rider still leads with 150 riders done. The Belorussian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Bazhkou follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172533_1.jpg

And finally, the favorites are coming! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Ganna is one of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172611_1.jpg

He finishes 29th, 16 seconds off. Maybe not what he wanted at the beginning. But no time to waste, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Fraile is right behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172739_1.jpg

Oh, and now it’s raining, and the wind is up, 12 km/h for now.
Not a problem for Fraile, who takes the hot seat, in the same time than Ioannidis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen is the next favorite on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172859_1.jpg

And same time again! He’s considered a bit faster for now, so he’s the designated leader. Can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge settle the discussion?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226172944_1.jpg

Nope. He’ll miss the top 20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan is not one of the day’s favorites, as he’s a mediocre time-trialist. But one can never rule him out of contention for the victory when he’s racing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173132_1.jpg

He’s got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen on his tail. The Dutchman is way better than the Slovakian, and limits his losses at 2 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173156_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Andersen is one of the best time-trialists up there, but the climbing might be too much for him. And another Dane is on the road, with the national champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Würtz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173328_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez is here for a third win in a row! Could he assert his domination today already?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173410_1.jpg

It was too hard for Andersen. Würtz gets a nice result, in the same time than Oomen.
Lopez loses 12 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio recently won the Critérium du Dauphiné. He also has the qualities to required here, in Scandinavia.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173623_1.jpg

As he takes the hot seat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Herklotz is at the flamme rouge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173638_1.jpg

The German loses 14 seconds. Probably not his best day, but that’s nothing with the stages to come.
And here it his, the world champion is the last to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Scandinavia/S1/20230226173813_1.jpg

And of course he wins this first age! He’s 10 seconds faster than everyone, what a beast!
He takes all the jerseys with it, except the young rider jersey, which goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund.
cycleYorkshire leads the team classification.

But, everything might change tomorrow. Probably will. Stay tuned.
