Critérium du Dauphiné - Stage 8
Imladrik
The Critérium du Dauphiné ends today, with a short, alpine stage between Megève and Courchevel, a ski-fan paradise. But for now, it’s on their bike that the riders will have to pass the category 2 and the three category climbs of the day, one of them the finish. There are 58 points to take for the mountain classification, so in theory, anyone could be crowned King of the Mountain in Courchevel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225215827_1.jpg

In fact, the battle is still open for any of the classifications, even though one could argue that we didn’t see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov flinch since he take the white.

The race begins with a 13 km downhill section, and then it’s already the côte de Domancy (cat. 2, 2,8 km, 8,7%), which will lead the riders to Megève itself. Up there, the weather should be clear enough to have a good sight on the Mont Blanc, France’s peak.

The yellow jersey’s team, MOL, is at the head of the peloton, ready to control the attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225220328_1.jpg

And indeed, they begins as soon as the climbing begins. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Garby manages to keep enough advance to cross the line in first, and to take 10 points (36 in total).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225220544_1.jpg

Still a long way to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, who’s 2nd and limits his losses (64). The next points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl (6), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard (16) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Elissonde (2).

The climb continues for a bit, so we’ll wait to have a good view of who is in the break.
It seems to be settled, with MOL back in force at the head of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225220912_1.jpg

So we have a group of 12 opening the road:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Garby (6th, 36 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer (1st, 64 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl (6 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard (14th, 16 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (5th, 38 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Chhetri
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek, Schelling (2nd, 44 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto (4th, 39 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Elissonde (24th, 8 points)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson (19th, 10 points).

Though battle to come in the mountains!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225221147_1.jpg

These 12 have 4’30 on the peloton, and 1’20 on a group of 3 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Potocki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Laengen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink.

A bit later, with 96 km to go, the leaders have regrouped and they begin the col des Saisies (cat. 1, 14 km, 5%). A pass longer than hard, though it goes 1600 m above sea-level, in the Beaufortin mountains, where we do another nice cheese, the Beaufort. Yup, a travel in mountainous France certainly is a travel to cheese country.
The leader’s advance is 3’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225221448_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer took pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Chhetri’s wheel when he attacked, and then he dropped everyone to take 16 more points (80). Behind him come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio (12), Chhetri (10), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (46), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling (50), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl (10) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto (41).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225221724_1.jpg

With only 32 points left to take, Guldhammer is very close to be certain to take the jersey home.

The sprinters are being dropped from the peloton, 4’55 behind Guldhammer’s group.

When the peloton arrives on the long flat section ahead of the Côte de Montagny, there are splits everywhere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225222514_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard are 1’10 behind the yellow jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar, McNulty and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Peters 43 seconds behind.

There is obviously no sprint in La Bâthie. We’re down 350 m above sea-level, in the surroundings of Albertville, where there were winter Olympics in 1992.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225222609_1.jpg

The leader’s gap with a 119 men peloton is 3’07.
Xero, De Stijl, Philips and UBS are working in the pack.

24 km left to ride, and the gap stabilized around 3 minutes, as the break begins the Côte de Montagny (cat. 1, 8 km, 7%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225222919_1.jpg

Not only is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer a better climber than the others: he uses his experience to let the others do most of the work and accelerates at the right moment. That’s 96 points for him now, and a won best climber jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225223119_1.jpg

No respite though: the climb to Courchevel is only 10 km away.

The peloton is down to 80 men, 4’06 behind Guldhammer. ISA is leading in the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225223446_1.jpg

7,3 km to go. A group of 10 just caught Guldhammer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson doesn’t let him rest and attacks! The last climb (cat. 1, 6 km, 6,9%) begins in 1,3 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225223718_1.jpg

The peloton of 69 is 4 minutes away, with Laegen, Potocki, Tolhhoek and Lammertink in between.

Under the 5 km banner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen have a 10 seconds gap on Guldhammer’s group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225223915_1.jpg

De Stijl are working in the pack.
4 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson accelerates again. He has 28 seconds on his former companions and 42 seconds on Guldhammer’s group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224021_1.jpg

In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski attacks in the first slopes (8% gradient!)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224114_1.jpg

3 km to climb for Roson. He still has 40 seconds on the 10 chasers, led by Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224243_1.jpg

The 58 men peloton caught Dombrowski and is 600 meters behind (or 3’26). This one really could go to the break!

2 last kilometers for Roson, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Elissonde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Garby try to go and get him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224516_1.jpg

They do that easily enough, and the 3 have a gap of one minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224608_1.jpg

Flamme rouge! The gap is still at the minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224911_1.jpg

But the yellow jersey’s group is only 2 minutes behind. Speaking of that, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio semmes to be in difficulties. So his pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225224802_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar are dropped.
Except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vlasov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Foliforov, the whole top 20 is here or ahead.

700 m for the three leaders. Their gap is shrinking, but so is the chasers’ gap to the yellow jersey…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225015_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schelling are dropped.

500 m. The groups are going together, and it’s hard to say who will win this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225140_1.jpg

200 m. The end is flatter. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Pomoshnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy are some meters behind the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225232_1.jpg

Thanks to a daring attack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson wins the last stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225402_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer reacted maybe a tad too late. He’s 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Elissonde is 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Garby 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Bartl 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225444_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Chhetri comes in 6th, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225519_1.jpg

And the last of the break are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Potocki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Osorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225605_1.jpg

Now to the GC battle…
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is a clear 13th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225711_1.jpg

Then we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski to close the top 15 (top 16, to be exact).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225742_1.jpg

Others in this group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Aular, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Pinot.

And finally, there comes the yellow jersey! He had 59 seconds on Cattaneo at the beginning of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S8/20230225225859_1.jpg

And he keeps it! A 35 second gap is awarded, which sees Tenorio win the race. He has 24 seconds on Cattaneo and 1’28 on Dombrowski and Sivakov. He can also keep the points jersey, for 7 points.
Guldhammer is truly the king of the mountain, and Sivakov of the young ones.
Tinkoff earns a well deserved win in the team classification.

And that closes an interesting week in France. See you next time.
