Critérium du Dauphiné - Stage 5
Imladrik
Welcome in Sisteron! We’re in the southern Alps, on the shores of the Durance, this long, long river, which crosses all of Provence, to join the Rhône near Avignon. Our beginning departement, the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (capital Dignes-les-Bains) is one of the biggest – and probably of the least populated – of the country. It borders Italy on the East. We also change of Region, as we’re now in Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur (capital: Marseilles).
But enough for the administrative stuff: you’re interested into racing, isn’t it? Medium mountain today, and the favorite’s list is very much like the one on stage 3, with riders who have to take back time in the GC.

I’m not sure that today will be the day for that, though: there’s a 16 km flat finish, which should favor a reduced sprint. Whether they’ll still be a top sprinter at this point is dubious, though: ahead of these 16 km, the riders will have to survive to three category 2 climbs, and three category 3 climbs. And 181 km of racing on top of that. Not an easy day by any mean.

The arrival, La Mure, is back in Isère, 30 km South of Grenoble.

The weather is clear – that’s a relief – and we have 60 km of flat and false flat before the serious things begins.

Quickly enough, everybody seems settled for a break of 6 with some known names: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (8th KoM, 10 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser (1st, 20 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Drizners, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto (6th, 11 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220220001_1.jpg

Yamamoto is the best placed in the GC (64th, +6’21).

Forget what I said: this does not please everyone. Huski, Trans, Carlsberg and Xero are chasing, and they don’t let this group more than 50 seconds.
And after a first missed attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem can have a gap, alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Blouwe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220220317_1.jpg

They have 30 seconds on the pack and are 40 seconds behind the leaders.
The pace seems to settle though. De Stijl come to replace Huski at the head of the pack. Still 20 km to go before the first climb.

The 9 mentioned before are together, and they have a 2’25 gap as they enter the col de Manse (cat. 2, 6,4 km, 5,9%). We’re now on the territory of Gap, capital of the departement of Hautes-Alpes, and the highest departemental capital of France, with a minimum altitude of 625 m.

And in Gap, the best climber is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans! He times his climb perfectly and takes his first 10 points. Then come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (18), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto (17), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Blouwe (4) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser (22).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220220653_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Bloem was dropped by the acceleration, and he needs some time to make it back.

The next difficulty is the côte du Motty (cat. 3, 2,5 km, 6,2%), 86 km ahead of the finish line. The gap is still at 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220221032_1.jpg

That’s after this climb that we’ll enter Isère again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Hermans does have the legs! He takes 6 points (16), ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto (21), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (20).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220221108_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser’s lead is only one point now. It doesn’t seem that he’ll be able to defend his jersey, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Arensman leads the peloton downhill, with a nice view over the river Drac, that we’ll roughly follow till La Mure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220221241_1.jpg

We have our first dropped in the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Lecourt De Billot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza are the unfortunates.

We entered the 60 last kilometers, and the leaders are at the Côte du Pont Haut (cat. 3, 3,4 km, 6%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220221539_1.jpg

The peloton is 1’52 behind.

Lehtinen led a group of 3 in the final kilometer of the climb, only to be the 3rd! It’s 6 more points for Hermans (22), while Yamamoto takes the provisional lead (25). Lehtinen is at 22.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220221707_1.jpg

Bloem will be caught by the peloton, as we approach the col de Maissol (cat. 3, 2,7 km, 8,1%). We are now circling around La Mure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220222027_1.jpg

The rider with a hard time is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Drizners.

Nobody can follow Hermans this time, and he takes the lead of the best climber classification, with one more point than Yamamoto and 2 more than Lehtinen. An intermediate sprint is coming in the next 7 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220222125_1.jpg

He passes the line all alone, with 48’’ on Lehtinen, 1’10 on Blouwe, Yamamoto and Bravo, and 1’25 on an 114 men peloton. Guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Potocki are dropped with 41 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220222548_1.jpg

Hermans is all alone upfront for the col de la Morte (or pass of the dead woman, in your language). It’s a category 2 climb, 3,5 km, 7,3%. Sadly I’ve nothing to say about the name of the pass, who really is the name of the village it’s situated on. I might have to go there to check.

But anyway, Hermans is strong, and he’s able to resist to the pack to take 10 points! What a ride, with 38 points taken today by the Belgian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220222712_1.jpg

There are many splits behind him, in the descent mostly. Some decent climbers have been dropped. I believe there will be more in the next kilometers, as De Stilj still set a fast pace at the head of the peloton.

The road ahead might feel a bit long for Hermans. 28 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220223045_1.jpg

He still has not been caught at the foot of the last climb of the day, the Côte de Laffey (cat. 2, 6 km, 6,8%).
And he did resist until 1 km from the top, but there is finally some movement in the peloton! And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson is the first to attack and quickly join him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220223412_1.jpg

The Spaniard takes 10 points, but more importantly, he reduces the pack to 46 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vlasov are the most notable riders to be dropped.

We arrive at the 10 km banner, and a yellow jersey group of 33 leads the race. Vlasov is the only one of the top 10 not in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220223803_1.jpg

8 km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Pinot isn’t really a flat beast, but he attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220223825_1.jpg

He’s chased by teams leaders, so he’s logically brought back under the 5 km banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss are the next to try. They have a short lead with 3 km left to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224025_1.jpg

Flamme rouge! Nobody deems them dangerous enough to really chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224125_1.jpg

800 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez tries to outsprint them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224209_1.jpg

400 m and indeed he caught them easily. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Bagioli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro are coming, right behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224308_1.jpg

200 last meters. These two are the fastest right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224338_1.jpg

And it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro who takes the victory! Quite a clear one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Bagioli is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224420_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer is 3rd, half a wheel ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Riesebeek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224510_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Penasa can hold on to 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Wellens is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S5/20230220224613_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Foss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Cepeda Hernandez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes close down the top 10.

This victory gives the day’s winner the green jersey. Hermans’ll be in blue. Tinkoff now leads the team classification.
No big change in the other classifications.

Tomorrow the stage starts from Grenoble – again! It’s rated flat, but… we’ll see what the riders think about this.
