Critérium du Dauphiné - Stage 3
Imladrik
We changed departement and of Rhône bank, as we’re now in Ardèche (capital Privas), a departement known for its wonderful countryside, and a departement which is the only one in continental France to not have any train line. And as we are in France, you can find here some very good cheeses and wines.
Today’s road is quite classical for Ardèche, as it’s all bumpy, though probably not that hard. But then again, I’m not on these bikes. Three category 2, one category 3 and one category climbs await our riders today, along the 162 kilometers which will bring them to Saint-Félicien, where a last category 4 climb will lead them to the finish. Speaking of the finish, Saint-Félicien is mostly known for the cheese of the same name.

Actually, our beginning village, Lamastre, is only 24 km south of Saint-Félicien. Only, in between, we’ll go into the Parc Naturel Régional des Monts d’Ardèche, meet the heart of French chessnut production.

The day’s favorites list favors the GC riders. Some who have lost time in the split yesterday, the first of all pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer, might already be looking to cr awl back in the GC contention. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Tenorio has the occasion to take the lead of the race today.

The stage begins with an uncategoized but steep climb, right outside of Lamastre. The attacks are still going on, and 9 riders are out for now:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen is leading the race
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Blouwe are 32 seconds behind
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Moulingui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Drizners, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Vanhoucke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Slagter and Voisard 9 seconds behind these guys.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219181648_1.jpg

The peloton s right behind, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Lander at its head.

At the top of the climb, it’s raining again, and everyone but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen has been caught. The peloton is one minute behind the Fin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219181816_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen has been joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Van Tricht as the they begin the climb of the main pass of the day, the Col de Montivernoux (cat. 2,k 14,8 km, 4,1%)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219182304_1.jpg

They have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen 40 seconds behind them, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Kamp, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Conti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Jang went out of the pack, 1’20 after the Aker rider.

Nobody here seems to dangerous for the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen is the first at the top of the pass (even though the climb will continue some kilometers, to arrive in Lachamp-Raphaël, the higher village of Ardèche). He had zero points at the beginning of the race, and takes 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219182619_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen is next, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Van Tricht was dropped again, after he made it back a first time. He should take the last points nonetheless.
The peloton is 3 minutes behind the leaders. All the others escapists have been caught.

With 100 km left to ride, it’s even snowing. Indeed we are more than 1300 meters above sea-level, but, well, we’re in may!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219182850_1.jpg

In the peloton, De Stijl, Voyagin-Bird, ISA, Carlsberg, Gazelle and Xero are working.

A bit later, the leading group arrives in the valley between the col de Montivernoux and the col de Clavières, our next categorized climb (cat. 2, 11 km, 3,6%), that they’ll begin in 13 km. They have a 2’21 gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219183233_1.jpg

At the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen can resist to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser on the flat section, and he takes 10 more points (20 in total). Visser has 10? Then come Van Tricht (6), Schelling (10) and Lehtinen (10). The peloton is only one minute behind, with some riders dropped. The next climb is only 4 km away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219183413_1.jpg

And the leaders already begin to climb the Col de Rochepaule (cat. 3, 3,8 km, 4,2%) with an advance of only 30 seconds on a 161 men peloton and still 55 km to ride until Saint-Félicien.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219183831_1.jpg

This time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser is able to take maximum points (20), and the provisional mountain classification lead. Then come pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lehtinen (14) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Schelling (12). The mountain classification leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Rossi, went out of the pack a bit late to take any points, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219183940_1.jpg

Now there is only a short descent before the col de Lalouvesc (cat. 2, 8,6 km, 4,9%). The peloton is 16 seconds behind the leaders, with the Albanian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kamberaj at its head.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219184239_1.jpg

And we have what is maybe the first surprise of the day, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti can’t follow the pace.

The catch is made at the beginning of the climb, under the impulse of Kamberaj, who then is replaced by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Olesen. Guldhammer and most of the leaders are close, but there are less than 100 men in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Eenkhoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty are the most notable riders missing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219184811_1.jpg

The yellow jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen, is still there, though.

No sprint for the points at the top. Olesen takes the 10. 36 km yet to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219184916_1.jpg

The peloton is back to 136 members, as it’ll tackle the Col de Fontaille (cat. 4, 1,6 km, 5,5%), 23 km before the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185150_1.jpg

Points are taken by the domestiques, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Yamamoto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kamberaj.

At the 10 km line, there are 111 men in the peloton, including the yellow jersey. There is an uncategorized bump, and then the final climb to Saint-Félicien (cat. 4, 1,4 km, 4,6%) (I’m really wanting cheese, now). The last 400 meters of the race are quite flat!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185458_1.jpg

And there it is, the finale of the day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185636_1.jpg

No action for the first part, and then with 500 m to go, somebody – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, to give him credit – finally attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185723_1.jpg

300 m to sprint, and he has a small lead. Against him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Potts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kamberaj – the better sprinter of them – and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185750_1.jpg

And it’s a win for Bennett! He used the inattention of the leaders to snatch a nice victory!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185903_1.jpg

The 2nd place is for Kamberaj – who deserves it after working hard in the last part of the race, then Potts and Vakoc.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219185947_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Nikiema comes right after for a 2nd top 5 for Xero, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Guerreiro is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219190042_1.jpg

He’s followed by his leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S3/20230219190047_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Palyi close the top 10.

All the 77 first riders are on the same time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png Eenkhoorn lost 58 seconds on the finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty 1’40.

The GC podium doesn’t change, as Larsen managed to stay in the first group. He also keeps the white and green jerseys, while Visser takes the best climber jersey.
Aker now only has a 14 seconds advance on Tinkoff in the team competition.

Tomorrow we’re back in Grenoble, for a time-trial. A long one, this time. We’ll meet you there.
