Critérium du Dauphiné - Stage 2
Imladrik
Welcome for the second stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné – and the race truly begins now, after yesterday’s prologue, dominated by Aker. The peloton begins the race in Grenoble’s suburbs, in the city of Seyssins, and will go west, to join the Rône Valley at Saint-Vallier. But though the road will not be all flat, we’re not crossing the Vercors and its high mountains now. For that, one will have to wait to the last stages of the race.

185 km of bumpy road, but a long, flat finish. Today should suit the sprinters. No intermediate sprint, but a category 3 climb, the Col de Toutes Aures, and a category 4, the Côte de Tersanne.

It’s worth to note that the 2nd in the GC and best young rider – but he’s wearing the point jersey today – pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen, is a competent sprinter and in a good position to rightfully take the green, and the yellow on top of that. He “only” has to finish on the day’s podium. Easy enough, isn’t it?

It’s raining over Grenoble, as the riders will have a flat introduction before really beginning the race today.

The sprinters’teams didn’t want too big a breakaway, so with 13 km done, there are only three riders ahead on the road: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Cheung, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Resell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Rossi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218182952_1.jpg

They have a one minute lead on the peloton.
Aker, Project: Africa, Crabbe and Tinkoff are in control. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Müller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Battistella are desperately trying to go into the break, but whitout much success.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218183109_1.jpg

The weather isn’t really better when the three leaders attain the foot of the Col de Toutes Aures (cat.3, 4 km, 5,6%). As the braves are beginning the climb, an interesting fact about this pass is that there his three passes with its name in France, one of them being just a few kilometers south. It means, in English, “the pass of all horizons”, because here, 626 above sea level, you’ve got a great view on the surroundings.
Well, maybe not today, with all that rain, even though it didn’t discourage some spectators to wait for the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218183617_1.jpg

The leaders now have a 3 minutes lead, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Rossi takes the matters in hands with one kilometer to climb. He can resist to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Cheung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Resell to take maximim points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218183658_1.jpg

95 km still to ride.

After a break, we come back to the race with 40 km to go and a gap down to 1’40. The Côte de Tersanne, in the village of the same name, is a cat. 4 climb, 3,4 km long, with a 4,4% gradient. We entered the department of the Drôme (capital: Valence)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Cheung is a bit naive, and he goes from too far. He’s easily beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Rossi, so the order at the top is the same as in the previous climb. Rossi will lead the mountain classification tomorrow, with a grand total of 11 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218184121_1.jpg

Crabbe, Tinkoff and Project: Africa are strong at the front of the peloton to catch the breakaway. There are 35 km to go still, and it’s downhill until the Rhône Valley, and then all flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218184413_1.jpg

Cheung can’t follow the pace at the front, while the pack is catching on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218184539_1.jpg

And it’s finally done with 8 km to go, but the peloton splits up. 102 riders, one of them being the yellow jersey, are 1 minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218184857_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Nur Hasan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pfi.png McLay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Korosec are in this group too.

2 last km, the red kite is in sight. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen and Mestric are riding hard to catch the main group because indeed, Guldhammer was caught in the split!
In the pack, we have 2 trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185150_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Donovan, Liepins, Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Awuku, Visser, Afewerki
Not the best lead-out for Project: Africa.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Einhorn are behind the Crabbe train, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Lander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Hodeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Contreras follow the Project: Africa’s.

Flamme rouge! And the Crabbe duo has an interesting lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185208_1.jpg

800 m and there was no change in the situation really.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185256_1.jpg

600 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Carsi is launching his sprint. Nearly all the others are already in the wind, except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, a bit far off, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Hodeg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185429_1.jpg

400 m and Carsi aleready seems to be tiring! The others behind are all much faster!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185523_1.jpg

200 last meters for Carsi! He’s still holding up and the others are slowing too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185620_1.jpg

And it’s a win for Carsi! In the back, Liepins can rightfully celebrate as he’s been the perfect leadout! Sadly, it should not be enough to take the leader’s jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185650_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Einhorn takes 2nd by a fair margin thanks to a well timed sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185924_1.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Lander is 3rd. Obviously, he wasn’t too disturbed by his leader’s difficulties. Speaking of that, we’ll soon know what happened here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Dauphine/S2/20230218185943_1.jpg

Despite his team’s work, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Afewerki can’t do better than 4th. Still a decent result. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Thijssen closes down the top 5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is only 7th due to a bad positioning, which is not a great reward for the team who worked all day long.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen could not reach the bonus second, but thanks to the yellow jersey’s difficulties, he’s now on top of the GC. Indeed, an enormous 2’22 gap has been given after the 86th rider. That will hurt a lot.
Except Guldhammer, other trapped riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar, which could give McNulty the leading role in his team, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah.

Larsen also takes the green and the white jerseys, which will be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Lammertink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Bjerg respectively.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/spr.png Rossi is the best climber for now.
Aker lost the yellow jersey, but they still lead the team’s classification.

Tomorrow is a middle mountain stage. We will not be in the Alps though, but in the beginning of the Massif Central, on the right bank of the Rhône.
And guess what? They’ll be cheese to eat.

Can’t wait!
