Tour of Norway Preview

The 2022 edition of the HC Tour of Norway brings together almost the entire PCT division, with 22 Pro Continental teams joining the race. Filling out the peloton, Oktal Pharma-TotalTV and Tafjord Kraft will step up from CT to make this an absolutely packed field. Last year's champion Mads Wurtz is not here to repeat, so we should see a new winner this year. That is unless 2018 champion Edvald Boassen Hagen can retake the title after 4 years.

All types of riders should be excited for this parcours, with opportunities for sprinters, time trialists, and puncheurs. Even the pure climbers could make a difference on stage four with a strong pace throughout the day. With such variety, the managers and spectators should be in for a nailbiter.

Before the race turns to the GC contenders, the sprinters should take center stage on stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 includes a bumpy final 20km, which should not drop anyone, but will highlight the need for good positioning and prioritize those teams with strong leadouts. Stage 2 comes in at 153km and a flat approach into Drammen where the finish line awaits. This should be a fast stage, with little opportunity for breakaways or late attacks given the straightforward nature of the run-up.

Our first major challenge will be the 29.9km individual time trial in Hokksund. An almost pancake flat race route should prioritize our strongest time trialists, while punchier GC contenders will hope not to lose much time. Depending on the race situation, a top sprinter could maintain high position on GC after this stage, but the general classification should begin to string out at this point. It should be interesting to see how decisive this time trial is in the overall outcome.

Stage 4 features the most climbing of any stage in the race and will be the longest stage of the race so far. Should the best climbers start attacking from the first slopes, the race could break up quickly, with riders all over the course. The final climb will make all the difference though. With gaps created on stage 3, we expect to see fireworks as riders attempt to gain back time.

Our final stage features 3 laps of a punchy circuit that should challenge the climbers and sprinters alike. Expect some attacks as riders attempt to grab a few extra places on GC, to drop the strongest sprinters, or to simply salvage the best result they can (should they have not met expectations in the earlier stages).

GC Favorites

In order to find overall success in Norway, it will be crucial not to lose time in the time trial with an ability to attack on the climbs. Standing out are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Eddie Dunbar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Lennard Kämna, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Rohan Dennis, who should be able to gain time on their competitors on stage 3. Rohan Dennis is also the highest returning finisher from the 2021 edition, where he placed 5th. Of course pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Tadej Pogacar will also contend with the highest mountain ranking and be joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Niklas Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Tobias Ludvigsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Milos Borisavljevic who all attempt to minimize time loss in the TT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Youcef Reguigui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Bonaventure Uwizeyimana, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Zouzou Andriafenomananiaina will also contend for the top spots.

It will likely be tough for this group to contend for the GC victory, but they should be amongst the strongest on stage 4 and could prove extremely helpful for their teammate GC leaders, especially for teams Indosat Ooredoo, Carlsberg-Danske Bank and Cedevita. Maybe a dominating performance in the climbs could overcome any deficits from the previous stage.

Top Puncheurs

Depending on the way stages 4 and 5 play out, these puncheurs could play a major role in the finish of each stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/taf.png Boassen Hagen is a former winner of this race in 2018 and will be looking for glory, either in a stage win or a surprise GC result.

Fastest Sprinters

This group should take control of the first two stages and may contend for stage 5, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Hugo Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Marko Kump stand out as most likely to make the finish of the final stage. If pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Sondre Holst Enger is able to take the first two stages, their TT capabilities may be able to keep them in top GC position through the stage 3 before surely losing position on stage 4. Of course, you can’t forget about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Peter Kennaugh or discount anyone else in this grouping.

Top Time Trialists

Stage 3 is the only offering for our time trial specialists, but it should be a fantastic opportunity for these contenders. Assuming no one has lost more than bonus seconds, the winner here should attempt to take the GC lead with a dominant performance. Beyond this list, there’s 11 more time trialists with 78 ranking, so there’s tons of opportunities for a surprise on stage 3.

Really big race for us. We've loaded up on potential GC options, and now it's time to deliver.

Kamna has had a long layoff, but now it's time to start a very crucial part of the season, where he will be one of our main leaders. He's one of the best time trialists and will hopefully be good enough on the climbs not to lose time. At least, that's the hope. Dunbar should be unbeatable, so I'm not anticipating a win. But if it all goes well, I really think a top 5 is possible. We have Eg here for a similar strategy, so a minor placing from him would be nice.

But we also bring Jensen as a pure puncheur. I have a hard time seeing this GC go to a pure puncheur, but once again, we had the race days, and there are two very good stage opportunities. It's certainly possible that he can get a minor GC spot too with 67 TT. Of course, the hope is that he won't destroy Kamna's GC chances while also blowing his own. The fact that the TT comes first mitigates some of that fear for me, but it's still real.

And then we have Lander for the sprints too. It was a tough choice whether to send Lander or AKA here. Ultimately I found AKA one more stage opportunity elsewhere. Lander will ened to get lucky to have a real impact.

Thank you for the fantastic preview seancoll! Awesome to have you on board.

We somehow (still don't know how) got over 200 pts from this race last year when it had the higher PTHC points scale. I can't expect nearly the same, but I bring a similar lineup and hope for a good performance.

Penko was 7th last year, Pogacar 10th and he's a level higher now. I also now add Borisavljevic and Crncevic to the mix which I didn't have last year. Gaudu is either a premium hilly domestique or a breakaway option. In theory I have all my bases covered and I need points badly. So let's see how PCM screws me over Pfft

Wonderful preview, looking forward to the reports Smile

Hopeless for the GC here, so we are just in Norway to battle for the TT with Durbridge and a stage win with McCarthy. Not sure if it's realistic for Durbo to repeat his TT win from Austria just a few days ago, but ofc he should be amongst the favorites. McCarthy usually delivered so far this year. He will be on the last places of the GC, when the hills appear, so he can ride aggressively Smile

Thanks for a kinda epic preview!

Take two for Dennis to show me why he deserves his price tag. The profiles seem less intense than Pais Vasco so I'm counting on him not losing as much time there. Kalaba is in a good spot for some great sprints.

Uwizeyimana did some amazing things earlier this year in Hong Kong, but he's very up and down. I hope he'll be recognized as a true GC contender, because with good positioning, stage 4 could suit him really well. Really, anything from fringe Top 5 to somewhere between 20th and 30th is in the cards (would be very bummed if it's less). El Sabbahi is here for the sprints, but the competition is probably too tough for him to do anything substantial. Looking forward to the racing!

Eden95
Hoping for at least a top-5 from Eddie here. Rough start to the season with AI shenanigans so hopefully he can ride without meddling here, regardless how well he does. Borges here purely for support, the hills on s4 should be too difficult for him to compete, so hopefully he can work in a supporting role/be given the freedom to attack. We have a strong TT lineup, and Page who always seems to punch above his weight. We’re in desperate need of points, and this race should be good for us hopefully.

Thanks for the awesome preview!

Thanks for a great preview first off!

We come here with zero GC ambitions since our TT squad is incredibly weak, we do however have a lot of stage ambitions, sprint field is a little stronger than I'd hoped but praying that Kennaugh gets work done here but I think that we're missing a key leadout for that to fully work, which is on me in planning moreso than anything else. Meurrise has full autonomy on the hill stages to do whatever he wants which hopefully results in points!

Thanks for the great preview seancoll. A great start for your reporting life. Welcome onboard and glad to have you Smile

We're here only for fun. No expectations whatsoever. Maybe Minali and Dumoulin can do something but overall it's one of three throwaway races for us this season.

Thank you for an awesome preview mate!

Hopes here lying with 2 riders.

Firstly with Cosnefroy in the GC although it may be tough for him to hold on in the hills. If he manages to then he could be on for a strong result!

2 opportunities for Jakobsen to get a stage win, hopefully he wins the first and holds the GC for a couple stages too.

Good luck to all and looking forward to the reports Smile

Lander seemed to be in a very good spot, but ultimately the riders at the front were able to hold on thsi time around. Not gonna complain about that, especially when Lander is not a top sprinter here anyway. 1 point is better than 0.

Thank you to seancoll for a fantastic report! One of the best sprint reports of the year. And congrats to Binance!

Nice to be in the breakaway with no real GC ambitions (as expected). Culey is a good fit for those tries, even though he missed KoM points.
