Giro d’Italia
Stage 19 sees the riders return to the mountains for the race’s 6th summit finish. This one at Val Martello. But while most of the prior stages have been long, this one is short, just 139k. Its “feature” a classic combination of the Gavia and then the Stelvio to open the stage, with the Gavia (16k at 7.9%) starting just 5k into the stage.
The GC contenders will once again be favored.
On to the Gavia 4 riders have a small gap – some familiar names - Smith, Nesset, Goos, and Amezawa. But this is by no means settled, a lot of Isostar riders flocking to the front of the peloton.
Some work from Isostar and then Dees keeps the time gap from growing too quickly but with 8.5k to go the front four have opened a lead of 1’57.
15k into the stage and riders are already coming off the back. Furthest back is Lo Cicero, he is already almost 5 minutes in arrears. Up front Gazelle doing enough to keep the leaders at a 2 minute gap.
1.9k to climb for the break and Smith attacks. He wants to put an exclamation point on his KOM victory. Lead has grown to 3’11 with responsibility being turned over to Evonik who have just Gavars working. 7 riders have been dropped.
Smith gets to enjoy the view from the top on his own. His lead is 1’30. The peloton at 2’32 with Gazelle working again. Another 25 riders have been dropped brining the peloton down to 152.
90k to ride Smith has started the Stelvio (21k at 7.1%), the other 3 have closed to within 26 seconds of him. The peloton at 2’35 with ELCO and Isostar working. Another 10 riders were dropped over the top of the Gavia and haven’t been able to rejoin. A number of sprinters joining Lo Cicero off the back.
18k to climb, hard work from Kastrantas has closed the gap to Smith to 2’18, he still has 24 seconds on the other three.
Ioannidis takes over from his teammate but the pace slows and with 9k to climb Smith’s lead is now 4’44, he has 53 seconds on the other three. Two more riders have been dropped including Groenewegen but it is probably further enough into the stage that the time limit isn’t an issue for him. Lo Cicero, on the other hand is 16 minutes down on the peloton.
Smith also completes the Stelvio solo. His lead over the other three back to 1’23 and up to 6’41 over the peloton where ELCO is still leading but not with any venom. From here 69k to ride, a long descent and some flat before the final climb starts 22k from the finish.
The points Amezawa earns at the top move him into 2nd in the KOM competition. Nesset up to 4th, Goos 5th.
Work from Osorio closes the gap a little and when the peloton finishes the Stelvio the gap is 6’25 to Smith.
The Pink Jersey takes the lead on the descent. The peloton is down to 95 on the descent, Roglic, 17th on GC among those in a 23-rider group just off the back.
Smith is caught by the rest of the break and they reach the sprint point with 35k to go with a lead of 4’16. Isostar and ISA-Hexacta forcing the pace in the peloton. A group of 6 including Roglic and 2 teammates are 2’49 behind.
The 94-rider peloton is onto the Val Martello climb (22k at 6.4%). Isostar (Petelin, Jaramillo, Verschaeve and Pronskiy) have the lead down to 2’23. The breakaway can be seen ahead and are about to pass the 20k banner. The Roglic group has been caught by a large group from behind but they are 3’43 down on the peloton. Not looking good for Roglic.
Moments later Oomen attacks. He already made one long-range attack pay off.
Izagirre drags the peloton back to Oomen, the action closes the gap to the breakaway to 1’19.
Neuman and then Prado go to the front for Moser, lowering the lead to 1’06. Hirt well placed for an attack. The peloton down to 87. Fung is the only King Power rider left in the peloton plus Smith out front. With Roglic chasing on his own now, over 5 minutes down, this could be a bad day for King Power in the team’s competition. Gazelle still has 7 riders in the front group.
With 11k to go Smith attacks the break. After a little work from EA the peloton has eased off and the lead is back to 1’22, Sergis on the front.
Just over 10k to ride and Hirt puts in an attack, Powless on his wheel. Up front Goos has bridged up to Smith and Nesset is trying, Amezawa looks like he is done and is just 33 seconds ahead of Hirt.
Hirt is shut down by Rybalkin but immediately Oomen counters with Bernal following. First time we have seen the Colombian on the offensive in a while. Amezawa is caught. Peleton down to 43, all the top 20 here except Roglic who is 5’30 behind.
Oomen sweeps past Nesset, with Bernal at 15 seconds but meanwhile Lecuisinier has attacked the peloton and is quickly gaining ground. 9k to go.
8.2k to go, just as Oomen reaches the front, Smith attacks. Bernal and Lecuisinier are 13 seconds behind. The 30 rider peloton another 24 back. Mavrikakis (20th on GC) has been dropped.
The front 5 comes together (Smith, Goos, Lecuisinier, Bernal and Oomen) and immediately PHL attacks. Madrazo leading a 20-rider chase group at 39 seconds. Geoghegan Hart, 14th on GC, has been dropped, Isostar’s chasing appears to have been misguided again.
6.5k to ride and the race is in pieces on the climb to Val Martello. For now, Oomen and Bernal have caught the Pink Jersey and are working with him, Madrazo trying to bridge across on his own. Sivakov and Galta are further back and particularly the Norwegian looks to be struggling.
The race situation:
Madrazo and then Sivakov and Galta make it up to the Lecuisinier group bringing 6 of the top 7 on GC together at the front (Barguil the missing rider is in chase group 2, 1 minute down). Lecuisinier attacks again.
5k banner. Madrazo and Oomen are able to stay with PHL, Bernal and Sivakov grinding along just 13 second back. Galta the first to show weakness and has lost 38 seconds on the Pink Jersey. The next two on the road are Kirsch (12th on GC) and Almeida (15th), they are looking to gain ground. Barguil (4th), Hirt (8th), Meintjes (9th), Powless (10th), and Bongiorno (11th) are all in a group 1’35 down on the leaders.
Sivakov and Bernal rejoin the front and that causes a stalemate which allows Galta and Kirsch to rejoin. Almeida at 17 seconds, Karnulin at 44 seconds, the Barguil group at 1’52. 3.2k to ride.
The stalemate persists long enough for Almeida to reach the front and the Barguil group to close to within 1 minute, then Oomen attacks again.
1.5k to go, Sivakov reaches Oomen but looks spent, the have a 12 second lead. Kirsch and PHL the next two.
Oomen drops Sivakov and reaches the 1k banner, he only needs 7 seconds to retake 2nd place. Lecuisinier and Madrazo chasing behind.
700 meters for Oomen but Lecuisinier is almost up to him. Madrazo 15 seconds further back. Then Bernal and Sivakov, the two young rider contenders locked together. Galta 18 seconds further back with Kirsch and Almeida. Bernal was only 13 seconds behind Galta in the GC at the start of the day.
Barguil group back to 1’54.
300 meters. The Maglia Rosa has the lead and the inside line. Madrazo has been caught by Bernal and Sivakov.
Oomen cracks and Lecuisinier has stage win number 3. 2nd for Oomen and a enough time gained to move him back into 2nd in the GC.
1’01 behind Madrazo takes 3rd, and Bernal 4th. Madrazo and Bernal finish on the same time but the time bonus is enough to move Madrazo into 4th by 1 second. Sivakov 5th, loses another 14 seconds but maintains a 1’06 cushion over Madrazo for the third podium spot.
A strong ride by Kirsch nets 6th. Galta, Almeida and Karnulin are 7th to 9th. Galta drops to 6th in GC, moving ahead of Barguil but losing ground to Bernal and Madrazo.
Vervaeke is best from the Barguil group and takes 10th. Barguil and the others in his group lose 3’05 which drops him to 7th on GC, 1 minute behind Galta and 1 minute ahead of Hirt.
Roglic loses 8’04 dropping him to 19th on GC behind his teammnate Smith. But the worse news for King Power is they lose over 10 minutes in the team competition dropping them to 2’35 behind Gazelle.
No changes in the other jerseys although Lecuisinier is up to third in the Points standings and could take 2nd tomorrow.
Lo Cicero misses the time cut.
