The MGUCI peloton comes back in Poland for the 11th time in a row. It’s a week long hilly stage race, whose route didn’t change much during the last years. It begins with a 7,7 km flat prologue around Krakow, and then includes two flat stages, and 4 hilly stages, 3 of which have an uphill finish. The sixth stage, in the Tatras, could even be considered a mountain stage, with its arrival at the Morskie Oko, more than 1000 meters above sea level.
With a HC rank this year, we have 21 PCT teams and 3 CT teams who made the trip to Poland. Let’s see which of them came for the GC.

As we could expect, we have a strong field of punchers ready to bring home the victory. Among them, Eduard Alexander Beltran and Joseph Areruya seem like the more complete riders, with solid chances to bring the GC home. The former was 2nd last year, with two stages win. We’ll see whether he’ll be able to repeat his performance, as Kwiatkowski is now showing is qualities in the PT. Though Cedevita didn’t bring Pogacar this time, they still have some good support for the Colombian rider. Areyua has the strenghths – and the team – to improve his 14th place of 2020
Laurens De Plus is a solid rider too, but we’ll have to see what the teams tactics are, as though Domen Novak doen’t have his punch, he’s better in the longer hills and could have a strong result on stage 6. Trans Looney Tunes also brings two potential leaders with Waeytens and Bystrom.
CT rider Gianni Moscon was 7th here last year, and he’s got all the qualities to have a very good race. He’s the top prologue rider among the favorites, and a good first stage could get him some precious seconds. But for that, he’ll have to show a better form that what he’s had since the beginning of the season.

Looking forward to seeing how Vingerling will do in one of the first few races where he will be fighting for his own chances potentially two stages where he could snatch some valuable points! Our team here is not necessarily the strongest but we have seen Meurisse do well this season as well so maybe he can create a solid result.
Love this race so should be fun to watch! Thanks for the preview!

Here we go. For me, this race will be the first real test of Aranburu's training. He's our sole leader, and the course suits him very well aside from the prologue. Predominantly hills that at times verge on medium mountains. Stages have climbs along the way, but aren't super long for stamina purposes. If he's gonna have success in any type of race, it should be one like this.
Tough competition of course. Areruya and Beltran are the two favorites (obviously), but plenty of other pure puncheurs and hybrids too. Will be interesting to see how selective the racing is, and which type of riders it favors.
We have Lander along for the ride too. It was a little bit of a hassle in planning to get him here, but we decided he had a better chance of scoring in one of the two sprint days than going to another couple of classics as the 4th or 5th guy. He won last year, so we know it's possible.
Thanks for the preview!

Some pressure on our guys again after the Berlin disaster. Hoping they work together well.

First HC race for us this year - but with the same leader as last year. As it was noted, Moscon finished 7th, and given that he's got the same stats, the game version and even the course are the same, well, I expect him to at least be fighting for a Top 10 again. His racing so far doesn't give me much confidence, but I still hope he'll start delivering here.
Otherwise, Chavanne will hopefully take revenge for his mediocre California prologue - it's a better place anyway, with more points available
And Stepniak just had a great sprint in California - in his case, I'm obviously hoping for a repeat. He's not listed because he's 1 sprint point too low, but sprint results in those stage races are (almost) more often surprising than not ^^
On top, I'm hoping for a nice battle between Areruya and Beltran - good luck to both of them and to all the other contenders

So freaking hyped for this race! I've blabbed and moaned and begged for attention enough by now about our racing drought (which to be fair has matched up perfectly with one of the most hectic and draining periods of my real life, so probably fine), but what a huge race to return on, a Win Goal for us and Areruya's first really suited (ignoring the prologue) race profile-wise. Will be a huge barometer for how high we can dream this season - obviously it's guys like Bennett and Houle that are the higher variance, but to be in the promotion fight we also need Areruya to start winning a lot.
Glad to see not many stage racers here, so the prologue should be less of a weakness though it still is one. An almost all-in team for us here with Stannard, Fouche and Habtemichael all in support/depth scoring roles, plus van Zyl and Nikiema who are also great domestiques, as well as Schomber for the prologue. Hope we grab the race by the horns and don't let go - not often in history Xero have a race with a top favourite and a top team, but hopefully we don't let the pressure awe us.

Races where I expect to do well are for some reason the races I dread the most. I hope we do well, though not confident of it at all.
An unmentioned rider that could do well here is Faglum Karlsson. He should have a nice lead over the other favourites from the start.
Thanks for the preview.

Not Sure what to expect from McCarthy here. Obviously not the best profiles for him, since it's kinda too much of a Mo/Hi hybrid and of course too many TT kilometres (I know it's just 8, but still). Maybe we have to focus on stage hunting rather than hoping for a higher GC? Would be nice if Durbridge has a good form at the prologue...
Bring it on!

Lots of hill depth for Kraftwerk, hoping for a strong Teams result and GC depth.
Haller in the favourites for the sprints but he will be left to surfing the wheels.
Thanks for the preview Imladrik.

Well, not optimal by any means, but I guess 5th is an OK-ish result by Chavanne given the length of the TT. However, I really hope with PCM22 we'll finally get rid of ridiculous winners like Main (congrats to aidan nonetheless, but that guy should never ever win this stage).
At least Durbridge did well, and I can more or less live with MvN and Faglum Karlsson also beating Chavanne.
But - what kind of an absolute joke has Moscon become... Losing 34" last year, he drops twice as much time this year - with exactly the same stats. If I didn't know it better, I'd secretly suspect that someone manipulated his stats in the DB, he's just so incredibly bad this year. Well, if it was his only bad day of the race, nothing is lost, but I suppose it was the first of seven really bad days. Even Schmid was faster... (and Beltran, and Areruya, and so on...)
So, let's try some breakaways then!
Thanks for the report and congrats to those who did well (or at least not much worse than expected ^^).

Given the TT circumstances, I guess I'm fine with Durbridge making the stage podium. Not worth too much, eventually, but any points scored in a TT is solid stuff from him.
Had hoped for a better result from Storer. But more important for him will be to not perform as bad as he used to do so far this season. U25 points would be welcome with McCarthy expectedly losing big in the TT. At least he didn't finish last

Ouch. That prologue produced way bigger gaps than I was expecting. I knew Aranburu's TT would hurt him, but that basically takes him out of the GC already. Looks like another race for the stage racers after all unless Beltran and Areruya can really blow it up.

Oh so close for Morne from his first professional win... would really love if he gets one at some point in his career! Happy to see Main taking it out though.
Not too bad from Areruya in relation to other top puncheurs, beating most (including McCarthy, Beltran and Paulinho) and only around 20 seconds to Hagen and Eiking. Obviously still have some catching up to do to Faglum Karlsson and Fernandes as expected, but at least like in Hong Kong we have our own card in play up there with Habtemichael at +31. Stannard and Fouche also ahead of most also bodes well for our depth scoring and chances at holding onto that Teams lead.

No idea what I was thinking with my team selection here. Was caught in two minds whether to send Borges here but decided against it due to the usual Mo/hil combo. But then also no TT riders or sprinters? I must have totally blanked! Break appearances is all we can hope for o guess. Hope Areruya and Beltran can tear it up here. Thanks for the first report

Not a good start. Beltran losing more than I hoped he would + he's behind some key riders in GC. Christodoulos just awful and nowhere near it.
Hopefully that's the only bad day we have.

42 seconds lost for EBH. Guess it could have been worse. Let's see if he still has some juice in his legs for tomorrows hilltop finish |
