Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Lion City. Although it's known for being a hub for international business and for having an airport that's just a little bit extra, we're here for a very different reason!
148 riders from across the world, representing 20 teams, gather here in Singapore for the Jelajah SKL. The race is in the C2 category and so 17 teams are here from the Continental Division while 3 from the Pro-Continental Division also make the journey.
We start here in Singapore with a 3.8km circuit around Marina Bay. All participants will be riding on their own against the clock in a fight to see who will be in the Race Lead going into the first road stage.
That first road stage is a fairly flat 176.4km starting here in Singapore before heading North into Malaysia where the riders finish near the beautiful Endau Rompin National Park. The final kilometres are a little bumpy, but we'd expect this ends in a bunch sprint.
The 3rd stage is likely to be the GC decisive one as the riders travel 176.6km into Kuala Lumpur. The final section of the race contains 2 particularly short but steep climbs which will provide the Puncheurs an opportunity to win the stage and the GC.
We then end with another circuit against the clock in Kuala Lumpur. At only 3.9km, it's not a distance where you will win the race but you may lose it here! After this second short time-trial we will be able to crown our race winner!
Historically, we have seen a real variation of riders mix it up in the Top 5 so this is bound to be a very open race!
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 2021 | Izagirre | Fernandez | Eiking | Kulaba | Haga | 2020 | Kemboi | Zmorka | Turgis | Bettiol | Dowsett | 2019 | Slagter | Vakoc | Mygind | Navardauskas | Mullen |
As it's very difficult to pick out favourites, we'll instead cover the different rider types.
We have a clear stand-out Puncheur here in Ian Boswell who will be expecting a stage win on our 3rd day here as well as pushing for a GC win. His team has afforded him some strong support too.
Calvin Watson is another very capable rider who will look to push Boswell. Serrano and Juul-Jensen also have great bursts of acceleration and so could make it tough for the American star.
| | | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | PRO | | Ian | Boswell | 80 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 76 | 69 | | Calvin | Watson | 78 | 76 | 72 | 70 | 72 | 67 | | Daniel | Hoelgaard | 77 | 72 | 72 | 72 | 74 | 65 | | Gonzalo | Serrano | 77 | 73 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 63 | | Jan | Dieteren | 77 | 75 | 70 | 68 | 66 | 58 | | Christopher | Juul-Jensen | 77 | 74 | 72 | 69 | 77 | 66 | | Olivier | Le Gac | 77 | 73 | 74 | 71 | 69 | 60 | | Deins | Kanepejs | 77 | 72 | 71 | 70 | 71 | 69 | | Loic | Vliegen | 77 | 76 | 70 | 70 | 74 | 67 | | Romain | Le Roux | 77 | 74 | 71 | 69 | 72 | 63 | | Momchil | Robov | 76 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 71 | 66 | | Sebastian | Schönberger | 76 | 73 | 74 | 71 | 71 | 59 |
There are a number of strong well-rounded riders who are unlikely to win any stage here but could contest for the GC with their consistency.
Warbasse stands out here but he will also be supporting Boswell so he may not be able to ride for himself.
Craddock is also very capable and should be able to ride for himself, so he becomes yet another American to keep an eye on.
| | | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | PRO | | Lawrence | Warbasse | 75 | 75 | 73 | 72 | 65 | 74 | | Lawson | Craddock | 74 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 68 | 76 | | Bakhtiyar | Kozhatayev | 74 | 71 | 75 | 71 | 69 | 72 | | Fikri Azka | Mohammad | 74 | 69 | 72 | 67 | 72 | 72 | | Marko | Pavlic | 72 | 71 | 73 | 74 | 69 | 74 | | Ramunas | Navardauskas | 72 | 69 | 69 | 71 | 65 | 74 | | Murilo | Affonso | 72 | 72 | 70 | 74 | 68 | 73 | | Remco | Evenepoel | 72 | 74 | 76 | 60 | 70 | 72 |
The CT division has some incredibly strong riders who thrive in short TTs. Chavanne and Kopfauf will be expecting to be 1-2 in the 2 stages suiting them but it's hard to see them holding on in the GC.
Keough is a favourite to be GC leader after Stage 2 given his strength in the Sprints too.
Aregger may have hopes of a strong GC but he'll need the ride of his life to keep with the favourites in the hills.
| | | HIL | STA | RES | REC | SPR | ACC | PRO | | Gabriel | Chavanne | 64 | 71 | 76 | 74 | 76 | 76 | 82 | | Markus | Kopfauf | 67 | 67 | 74 | 67 | 74 | 73 | 81 | | Luke | Keough | 62 | 67 | 73 | 73 | 79 | 79 | 80 | | Alex | Frame | 62 | 69 | 74 | 72 | 77 | 76 | 79 | | Marcel | Aregger | 71 | 72 | 71 | 77 | 78 | 77 | 78 |
There may only be the 1 stage favouring the sprinters but plenty of them have made the journey here for the glory of a stage win and a potential GC lead going into Stage 3.
Alaphilippe and Russo may have hopes of GC success given their abilities over the hills although neither are particularly good against the clock.

Big thanks for this LLS
Important race for Glanbia given there are two TT stages.
Very interested to see if Frame performs at all. We have a gang of other TT guys, just need one of them to have a good day!
If Craddock can hang in over the hills I'd hope his TT ability can help him to a good GC.
Is it just eme or is Boswell everywhere ?

Finally some stages for Gabby, looking forward to see him racing in his strongest discipline!
For the GC, we'll obviously have to hope for a race as unselective as in 2020; if Kemboi can win this, Chavanne or Aregger could do so, too. I guess for this one of them would need to be in yellow going into S3 - on paper that could be possible, but prologues rarely have expected outcomes. So let's just throw in a couple of TT specialitsts and hope at least one of them will perform.
Thanks to LLS for taking on a race that nobody else wanted (or could take, because of being in there as well).

Three of our leaders here so clearly a lot invested. Keough makes his season debut (while as Mac notes Boswell has chewed up most of his or will have once California happens).
Ideally, Keough puts up good times in stages 1, 2 and 4, Boswell wins 3 and Warbasse the overall. In practice, who knows how multiple leaders work out and half of that would be a really nice outcome. I think Stage 2 will be too hard for Keough and would rather see Boswell take a shot at that one.
I think 2020 was still under PCM18 so hopefully the sprinters holding out won't happen again as Keough is not the sprinter likely to hold out.

Lot of expectations heading into this race. Rajovic makes his debut as well as Watson leading. Kopfauf in the prologue too will be interesting to see. Excited for this one to get going!

Vanderpool isn't the best PRL rider, but she can still do ok i hope. Then it's not much hope for Major or Matthews, so two breakaways would be ideal

Decent start for Craddock.
Cruz really is our most reliable TT guy. I sort of presumed Frame would flop so I'm not put out by that!
Thanks LLS, good to see a specialist win!

4th from Keough, 3rd favorite, so only 1 spot off, which isn't bad for prologue randomness. A result in the sprint would give us a shot at the points jersey with him. Great ride by Warbasse is a nice bonus and a first this season.
So many positive ways for this race to work out for us. That scares me.
Congrats to Jura, good to see the stats pay off a little.

I don't remember ever doing better than this in a prologue, they're random and I never got lucky before. So not a surprise this turns out to be the first notable TT result of Penko's career. Too bad he's already 26
Pavlic at only +4 is also good. So in theory my two GC hopefuls are in great spots. Thanks for the report LLS, looking forward to the rest of the race.

Gabby
We had 3 riders among the Top 10 favorites, so there was hope at least one would deliver - and Gabby did 1st prologue of the year, 1st win - please continue this way
It's obviously nice to come out on top of the prologue randomness - iirc Keough was the only other favorite actually finishing in the Top 10. Although some better depth results would've been nice, we'll happily take that stage win - which means that we've already scored more points here than in Paiz Vasco ^^
Hopefully Gabby can repeat that on stage 4 and have a shot at the green jersey as well; in terms of GC we definitely have to hope for a repeat of the 2020 scenario, given that we don't have a strong puncheur here.
On the other hand, Aregger has done well on stages like S2/S3 already - but especially on S2 I'll have to hope he won't be hit by the 4th-sprinter-bug.
Thanks for the report and the congrats.

Too bad that Aregger was completely out of position, he seemed to have great speed at the end again, surging from nowhere to 7th.
It was a pretty unlikely scenario that Chavanne would keep yellow, but the bonus seconds went to the "right" riders, in the best possible order. It'd take a miracle for him to hang on tomorrow, but who knows?
Good to see that we had a 3rd rider in the front group, now let's see what we can do tomorrow! McCormick obviously are in a fantastic position and could get another huge result!
Thanks for the report, LLS!

I'll take the lack of breakaway for a 6th place for Major, solid effort for the Bahamanian sprinter.
