Milano-San-Remo discussions
Imladrik
There we are, last race of the month, and first monument of the year. Milano-San-Remo is waiting for the PT teams, as well as the PCT wildcards which have chosen to attend.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Profiles/topclas_sanremo.jpg

The route didn’t change much over the years. It’s as always a nearly 300 kilometres long race, with the not too difficult paso del Turchino mid race, and then, in the last 50 kilometres, the three Capi precede the Cipressa, and the Poggio di San Remo, where the race result is sometimes decided.

Three types of riders are able to win this race: the sprinters, (Degenkolb, 2020, for Isa – Hexacta; Van der Lijke, 2018, for EA Vesuvio; Van Stayen, 2017, for Evonik – ELKO), the punchers (Hagen, 2019, for Air France – KLM) and the fighters/baroudeurs (Summerhill, 2021, for Amysim – Cervélo).
Let’s see who the favorites are.

The sprinters

Quite the stacked field of top sprinter here, which was to be expected in such a prestigious race. In case of a bunch sprint with a not too hard race, it’s hard to look passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard, who should be top favorite.
Behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria all can survive smaller hills, while 2018 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare and 2017 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen are well armed in case of a harder race.
It will be interesting to see if the pairs of leaders (Ewan and Degenkolb for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png ISA – Hexacta and Appollonio and Swift for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Moser – Sygic) won’t be stepping on each other toes.

The punchers

Well, it seems like most of the favorite sprinters team also brought their best punchers! Be it with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Koretzky or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc, the question is open as to know whether their team brought any domestique to do the 300 kilometers necessary work to catch the breakaway.
In this field, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png UBS which comes with two potential leaders, with Buchmann and Müller, who’ll try to improve they somewhat disappointing first months.
For all this guy to have a chance though, they’ll have to make the race very difficult for the sprinters in the not so hard hills in the surroundings of San-Remo.

The baroudeurs

Though a breakaway win seems hard to imagine, seeing the quality of the teams we have here, a late attack could surprise the sprinter teams. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Summerhill might want to repeat his last year victory for his new team (though they brought their own sprinter), whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Aker – Mot comes here with a bunch of strong rouleurs who might want to shake the race a bit.
Other teams like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Polar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Grieg-Maersk are also the teams who are counting on outsiders to have a good result.

With a race this long, nobody can be assured of anything. So see you tomorrow for the results of this first major render-vous of the Pro Tour!

Nice preview! Hopefully Gaviria and Per can work the magic after last years shambles.

Let's have some fun!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

After years of sending a sprint leader, it was time to send a puncheur here. Lopez feels a good choice for this race as his attacking spirit that's often overly aggressive should be a good fit for this race.

No matter what happens, a repeat of last season's race is unacceptable.

No Kragh, no Wisniowski for us anymore. I just hope that it will make Pedersen take the last step and really mix it amongst the best. As always a race that can go in different ways, but hopefully a good one for us.

Feels like we've covered all bases with our line up. What could potentially go wrong, then? Pfft

Basically everything! Very excited, though, and really hoping for a big result from one of Wisniowski, Kragh or Mohoric.

Nemolito
Hoping the race ends in a sprint, and hope the AI wants this as well from the beginning. In that case Manninen could go for a top 10 or top 5 with good positioning Smile

All about Groenewegen again here. 50:50 chance that it works.
Podiums in the past show his potential when having the good train and day form. Out of top25 obviously always a chance as well, in especially when the strong engines go for it.

Let's hope for a thrilling race with the best winning.

Bikex
Don't really know what to expect here. I left Gidich at home, but brought two options that can do well here depending on the circumstances. Hsu is one of the sprinters that should struggle the least with the hills and Quita combines rouleur and puncheur skills.

tastasol
I wasn't sure how we would cope with going from Wisniowski, Kragh and Pedersen for the flat classics, to basically building a team just for Pedersen. Still not sure if it turns out to be the best in the end, but wow, it was good to see Pedersen unleashed today!

Was worried that he had used up his chance with the attack before the Poggio, but luckily it was something left. It of course played out in the best possible way for us, and when he was in second position under the kite, I was quite confident that he could do it. Still amazing to see him pull through and take the win. We need big wins like this to avoid relegation, so I'm stoked to see him do so well in the first big flat classic - especially after a bit underwhelming result in Franceville.

Our first (and second in total) monument win since Roubaix in 2019. Hopefully we can give it a good crack in RvV over the next seasons to achieve wins in the three main monuments for us.

Thanks for a well written report, Imladrik Smile

Like in 2021...nothing. Still, we was in breakaway, thats good. Thanks for the report and congrats to the winner!

I'm not happy. None of the puncheurs tried anything. Just very disappointing from an Evonik and game perspective.

Congrats tasta, at least we got a cool winner out of this.

What a win for Grieg!

Grosu with a positive result here. By far his best performance of the season. There's still hope!

Exactly like last year, the flat profile caused late attacks by rouleurs who couldn't be caught anymore after/with the descent of the Poggio. Big congratulations to Grieg! I can definitely live with seventh from Manninen Smile

Thanks for another great report, Imladrik!

Neh. Decent sprint to be only beaten by Coquard, but that was more of a lame duck race. We didn't utilize our strong flat team at all to keep a foothold on attacks or score depth points/lead Gaviria out, that is a shame. Big result for Grieg though, Pedersen is a beast! Thanks for making the report very nice once more even if the racing was dull Smile

Can't fault us for not trying. Those were good efforts from Kragh and Konychev. Had hoped Wisniowski also would join the fun to give us an even bigger chance at joining the winning move. When the race gets decided with a rouleur attack, it obviously hurts to not be part of it, as those attacks were what our team here was built for. Though, big congratulations to Grieg! A monument win, even the one most difficult to predict, is massive.

Gustavovskiy
A fun race ending with the late attack sticking. Congrats tastasol, Wonderful victory!

We had a solid team and was expecting a good result, mainly from Van Stayen, who couldn't be bothered. Van Der Sande came up to deliver our top10 and seems to be the AI's prefered sprinter on our squad. Could have been a top5 if it weren't for the breakaway's success, but well that's how luck goes.

Thanks for the report, once again Imladrik!

I take 12th and 27th! Seeing Quita in the front positions towards the end made me hope he might try something, but it probably wouldn't have lead to anything.
