Gent - Wevelgem
--
Preview
The race will be brought to you by Imladrik
The C2 cobbles classics season opens, where else, in Belgium and the division's marquee riders have heeded the call. Gent - Wevelgem is a storied race in the MG, dating back all the way to the beginning in 2007. And though its status has taken a bit of a hit in recent years, it’s still a prestigious race to win!
After a long, flat start to the race, the main difficulties begin in the second half, where the wheat will be separated from the chaff with regards to cobbles skills. However, there’s a long run-up to the finish line without any more hills or cobbles sectors, which often leads to groups reuniting again towards the end.
Last year, Viktor Manakov was the first rider since Ramon Sinkeldam in 2014 to win the race solo. In the meantime, we’ve had groups ranging from 2 to as many as 87 competing for the win. A whole range of outcomes is possible, and therefore many different riders will smell an opportunity to score a good result.

Breen and Fenn are the best pure cobblers in the field and if you had to bet on one rider to distance everyone else, those two might be your best shot. They also have decent speed to finish well from a group sprint, but if a group sprint is what you expect, there’s no way of looking past Saber, who’s not only the best sprinter in the field but should also be able to hang on to most selections.
Bianchi - Panerai comes with a dual leadership of Chatarunga, a strong cobbler, and last year’s winner Manakov, then for Crabbe. Crabbe turn to Ariesen, who finished 11th in support of Manakov here last year and gets a chance to lead on his own.
Both of them fit in a large group of good allrounders who aren’t necessarily the best pure cobbles riders. These include Vermeersch, Declerq, Sweeck, Monk and Okbamariam.
On the contrary, the likes of Puccio, Taubel, Richardson or Orue are strong on cobbles on paper, but lack some backup stats to make them out and out favorites. The former two at least each cracked the Top 10 once though, so they’re a force to be reckoned with.
Lastly, we have a few riders who can be considered cobblestone specialists, but also pack a very good punch. Matthews, Abraha and Lindeman will hope for a selective, but not too selective race to be able to sprint for a good result. Vermeersch could be counted in this group as well, but his strong stats across the board leave him higher up the list.
| FL | HI | ST | RS | CO | SP | AC | Sanikwathi | 72 | 66 | 70 | 67 | 72 | 78 | 78 | Silva | 75 | 68 | 69 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 78 | Dakteris | 75 | 64 | 74 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 77 | Losch | 73 | 65 | 72 | 68 | 71 | 78 | 79 | Major | 74 | 66 | 74 | 70 | 70 | 77 | 78 | Boeckmans | 69 | 64 | 68 | 65 | 70 | 77 | 77 | Siric | 76 | 70 | 75 | 78 | 74 | 75 | 71 | Rathe | 73 | 66 | 74 | 71 | 73 | 74 | 76 |
There are also a few actual sprinters who might, if the race is easy enough, hang on until the finish line and challenge Saber. Sanikwathi and Losch are the best in terms of pure speed, while Dakteris, as well as Siric - though with much lower speed -, perhaps have the best chance to remain competitive until the end.
| FL | HI | ST | RS | CO | SP | AC | Vanmarcke | 73 | 63 | 72 | 67 | 77 | 67 | 67 | Domene | 73 | 57 | 73 | 68 | 76 | 74 | 75 | Paprstka | 75 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 72 | Scotson | 72 | 63 | 73 | 70 | 75 | 66 | 75 | De Witte | 74 | 68 | 75 | 72 | 75 | 71 | 69 | Schlechter | 74 | 72 | 71 | 67 | 75 | 61 | 66 | Centrone | 74 | 71 | 72 | 67 | 76 | 53 | 58 | Hnik | 73 | 64 | 73 | 69 | 76 | 72 | 67 | Erdenesuren | 72 | 62 | 72 | 70 | 75 | 69 | 66 |
Some teams bring impressive depth here. Trans Looney Tunes especially might face a leadership controversy with Schlechter, Centrone and Abraha. Otherwise, Vanmarcke is the biggest name on this list, he even finished 3rd in 2018 and no less than 2nd here last year, in addition to three more Top 30 results over the years. But age has taken a toll on him, and given that Taubel will very likely be the clear team leader, a top result is probably not in the cards.

Hoping for a Top-10 from either Monk or Scotson. Would be nice extra points from a C2 race and at least the chances seem to be realistic.

With our best cobbler being Louvel (69 CO) there's not much to hope for in this race, but maybe he'll be able to do some kind of wonder from the break
All other hopes lie in a race that no one makes hard so that maybe Alaphilippe can survive until the final. Boivin's also here for a sprint, but with 59 CO that would have to be a really slooooow race ...
So I can simply enjoy the race without the distraction of my own riders.

All hopes have been placed on Saber here for our team. We didn’t bring Lampaert to not risk a leadership fight with those hills blowing our chances. But Saber should bring his A game. Even though I feel Saber won’t pull it off, a win is needed for our team goal here. So fingers crossed!

Rathe's one chance all year to shine and he hasn't disappointed the last two years. But I think the field is deeper this year and Cunego had to work pretty hard to get him on a leaderboard.
But if he does put in say, a top 15, I am sure he will be out doing some sightseeing after the race.

Need this to end in a small group sprint to stand any chance, and being one of the very few races we actually could contest for i have all my fingers crossed.
Matthews has punched above his weight more often than not in the past, so here's hoping he thrives in the leader role. Major, we'll see what happens. Ideally we'll have a man or two in the break as a minimum.

Wow, Saber surprises me once again. He actually CAN do cobbles Congrats to Colombini, great form early in the season!
Domene is having a nice final maxed season so far, clearly outperforming his stats and not caring about missing teamwork - while some of the really strong cobbles teams can't be too happy so far.
Thanks for a great report, Imladrik, looking forward to read more of those

Great breakaway work from Kelly to hang on as long as possible, and Redy again getting down the road. Matthews however was awful, when viewed with GP Hernig he doesn't seem up to leadership (unlike former T3A lads Domene and Insausti)

Saber turning up just like I had hoped. I expected him to wait for the sprint and it was stressful up untill the end but avoiding the chaos of a sprint might have been the best choice. A special race for me, as the start was in my birth city Deinze. With 2 wins out of 3 races I couldn’t have wished for a better start for my star rider. Lets hope he continues the good work!

A quiet 11th place for Monk ist quite okay and just the result, we realisticaly could "expect" here. Seems like we did lead the chase at times, too, which is nice to see in a cobbles race and happened in Le Samyn as well - with a much better result though
Thanks for the report and congratulations to those, who did well!

Great stuff by Sanikwathi to finish 3rd, we were very active both in chasing and attacking and having a sprinter to survive eventually makes it good after Nielsen and Lindeman could not make it solo. Thanks for the report!

Clearly the highlight of that was have a great new reporter on board. Thanks to Imladrik
With this and Herning, the McCormick cobbles season is over, thankfully.
Congrats to Saber on a classy win.

Chatarunga did his best but just fell a little bit short to finish 10. So close but not enough to finish Top 5 to achieve our second Goal. |

Very nice riding from my guys, lots of TV time and a good result in the end to go with it! A bit of a shame Siric was spent by the end, because he was one of the better sprinters in that group.
Saber is the buy of the year, huh?

Thanks for the report and congrats to the winners!
Slowly I begin to be dissapointed with the results my guys are doing here. I expect a lot more from them, especially Vermeersch, as barely making top 30. We have to see how it will develop but for now the team management is not amused.
