The Vuelta al Tachira has been around for a long time, since 2009 to be exact. It's an early season test for the CT stage racers over 10 days of racing. Four of the first five days are for the sprinters, with the first test coming on stage 4 with a steep finish. A mountain time-trial is then followed by three more mountain stages. Those should mostly shape the GC, but if things are still tight there is a final 16.6 km flat time-trial to settle things.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | TT | RS | RC | AC | PR | Schlegel | 69 | 78 | 77 | 65 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 64 | Alarcon | 66 | 81 | 70 | 64 | 69 | 68 | 73 | 63 | Warbasse | 70 | 78 | 75 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 65 | 74 | Kozhatayev | 74 | 77 | 74 | 72 | 75 | 71 | 69 | 72 | Campero | 65 | 78 | 70 | 69 | 70 | 72 | 71 | 69 | Vasyliv | 71 | 77 | 74 | 72 | 72 | 75 | 67 | 72 | Kuss | 68 | 78 | 71 | 64 | 76 | 71 | 69 | 65 | Talansky | 69 | 77 | 75 | 70 | 73 | 74 | 66 | 70 | Rochas | 67 | 77 | 74 | 61 | 70 | 73 | 73 | 62 | Mannion | 68 | 77 | 71 | 64 | 76 | 65 | 71 | 64 | Iturria | 71 | 77 | 73 | 72 | 74 | 76 | 61 | 73 | Henao | 65 | 76 | 76 | 66 | 73 | 71 | 70 | 64 | Laengen | 69 | 75 | 72 | 75 | 74 | 73 | 66 | 76 | Gilanipoor | 68 | 76 | 70 | 67 | 69 | 71 | 71 | 67 | Pedrero | 67 | 76 | 73 | 65 | 68 | 71 | 71 | 65 |
Fresh off offseason training Schlegel has a big advantage over the rest of the field when it comes to punch and acceleration. If he can make that count then he's a big favourite. Alarcon on the other hand is the clear best climber. He can limit his losses in the mountain TT, but will need to ride aggressively on the mountain summit finishes before the final ITT. Riders that are better balanced across all the stages include Warbasse, Kozhatayev, Campero, Talansky and Iturria. Kuss, Rochas and Mannion are also pure climbers to be reckoned with, but they might be in a super domestique role.
Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Lead out | FL | RS | SP | AC | Krieger | 71 | 74 | 79 | 79 | Johannessen | 67 | 73 | 67 | 72 | Prasad | 74 | 74 | 78 | 79 | Moschetti | 70 | 72 | 75 | 76 | Losch | 73 | 68 | 78 | 79 | Tzortzakis | 69 | 67 | 74 | 72 | Mareczko | 74 | 73 | 78 | 77 | Weemaes | 71 | 69 | 71 | 71 | Itami | 73 | 64 | 78 | 79 | Aquilani | 69 | 67 | 68 | 69 | Nizzolo | 72 | 65 | 79 | 77 | Mudgway | 70 | 66 | 76 | 78 | Feiereisen | 74 | 68 | 77 | 78 | Granigan | 72 | 73 | 73 | 75 | Alaphilippe | 72 | 69 | 77 | 77 | Louvel | 71 | 72 | 67 | 66 | Guerao | 72 | 61 | 81 | 73 | Aberasturi | 73 | 69 | 78 | 76 | Bauhaus | 74 | 65 | 78 | 75 | Plowright | 67 | 70 | 69 | 69 |
Generally the sprinters without lead outs do better so the favourites should be the likes of Krieger, Itami, Alaphilippe and Bauhaus. Saying that there are a couple of competent lead out riders here like Tzortzakis and Weemaes, so hopefully they can do a good job for their sprinters.
| TT | RS | RC | PR | Predatsch | 77 | 77 | 69 | 77 | Oram | 77 | 72 | 68 | 77 | Cruz | 77 | 70 | 67 | 77 | Frison | 77 | 71 | 67 | 77 | Downey | 77 | 74 | 66 | 77 | Mottin | 77 | 71 | 64 | 77 | Vanderpool | 77 | 64 | 61 | 76 | Laengen | 75 | 74 | 73 | 76 | Cheyne | 76 | 75 | 70 | 75 | Laizer | 76 | 69 | 67 | 75 | Siddikov | 75 | 74 | 71 | 75 | Mostov | 75 | 75 | 65 | 75 |

S so many former riders high on the favourite list.
Schlegel, Krieger, Nizzolo, Bauhaus.
Hope they do well even though in South America must hope for a nice Alarcon late career performance. |

Was unfortunate how the OVL shook out for us where even Fouche with 76MO couldn't get under the limit and we did try to get a rider for these races but lost it at the eleventh (or forty-sixth, who remembers) hour So it's a team with Nikiema and Kipkemboi as our breakaway/late attack gunners (since there were no hilly stage races for them in C2), two neo-pros and our two stagiaires getting some L1 XP Should be on the offensive and those two Africans using their ACC to seize their leadership opportunity
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

We will make our debut in this race. We don't have high hopes, but if we could snatch a stage win it would help us a lot with our goal of 8 stage wins for the season.
We have some guys who might be able to hit the break and finish it. |

Looking forward to this, as I said in my HQ, the real start to Glanbia's season.
We like this race with Dan Martin coming 2nd last year.
Have to say I am encouraged by that start list. Not as many strong Stage Racers/Climbers as I thought and definitely a weaker than expected TT field. Just hope the AI treats Mannion as a back-up and Talansky as clear leader
Thanks for preview and good luck all

So, we have capable riders on all terrains here, so let's hope it'll bring something, even though I don't know what yet.
Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the race (and the clash with fellow French and Spanish team) |

I've always liked this race, and with Rochas as a top 10 candidate I'll definately keep an eye out

Hopefully this time we'll be able to bring in first Points. We are far from being favorites on anything but I hope Predatsch will be fine till last stage and can bring in something nice. On the other stages maybe Bauhaus can surprise some at the first one and the rest is capable to bring some results when it goes uphill, though non of them are really top notch climbers. We will see. Thanks for the preview!

Tthis is about as close as possible for a home race for Aruban rider Jonathan Croes! Who didn't make the squad for this event
Lets see how the training for Vanderpool goes, and if Shaq is capable of stealing any points. Otherwise it's just unmaxed talents going for breakaways

First race of the season (and the team history) and there are some prospects for decent results in the GC as well as nearly all the stages, though the captains are mostly on their own as most of the squad is here to gain some XP instead of points. At least the XP is guaranteed...

We're not here because I don't like long stage races that much, but I'm still looking forward to this race! It will be nice to see the vast majority of the division's top climbers - and hence Stüssi's main rivals - in action, so we'll see what we have to expect for the later races
While I agree that Schlegel could be able to win a couple of stages due to his superior acceleration (furthermore supported by Zimmermann, who could've made the GC riders list as well), I don't expect him on top of the GC, given the almost 40 ITT kms. The TT stat obviously isn't that decisive in the MTT, but with the rather flat start and end Warbasse would be my top favorite. And Schlegel could easily lose a minute in the final ITT if he doesn't have a stellar day.
Alarcon is the big question mark for me. If he really dominates the mountains - which he at the same time should (+3 Mo compared to everyone else) and shouldn't (mediocre energy stats) - I could also see him gain enough time on the competition to make up for his lack of TT speed. Furthermore, he also has a good dom in Ablenado, who could get a good result on his own if he doesn't lose too much time on the hilly stage.
My personal favorite however is Warbasse, who has a great helper in Kuss, and who is the top TTer among the strongest climbers. However, PCM often doesn't really care and creates some unexpected result, so let's see how it goes

Keen to see how my new stage race leader will go here as well as Nizzolo. Mudgway testing out his new skills and lead out skills for Nizzolo. Will be an exciting race for us that we hopefully we can get a decent result in.

We've brought a nearly identical lineup to the one that allowed Campero to shock the CT division and get the victory here last season so I'm hoping he will put up a good showing in his attempted title defence.
I think the startlist is stronger than last season but it's possible he could create another upset.

Big milestone here for McCormick so going to bore you all with a long post.
First, probably the best team we have ever sent to a race. And 6 of 8 from the US, which is consistent with the original vision of the team.
Second, I would agree with Fab that Warbasse is the most complete rider here and should be the favorite. If he can limit time losses to Schlegel on the hill stage then the MT stages and TT should be enough to reverse that. Alarcon is a threat in the mountains but hopefully those energy stats come into play and with Kuss plus Revard at 76 MT and Matte and Hoehn at 75 MT we have the team to control the race. All of the climbers except Kuss are decent TT riders so should put us in a good position for depth points. On top of that Feiereisen should have a chance to score some points in the sprint given where he sits on the list and with some luck Mostov could make a top 8 in the TT stage. Even if he doesn't, he and Granigan give us strength on the flats to protect Warbasse and keep things under control.
Finally 4 of my 6 original level 1 signings are here and three of them racing maxed for the first time. (Hoehn, Revard and Mostov). Granigan also here but still lvl 4 because for some reason he needs to ride a season totally out of his depth to max out. Only Brendean Rhim and Connor W. Brown missing. Was tempted to send Rhim to get 5 out of 6 but didn't really make sense to send another climber The Initial is biding his time on the FA list routing for us to promote so we can fit him back on the roster.
Probably sacrificing some Kuss points by pairing him with Warbasse but had to pair them somewhere and wanted to send a very strong team to the first stage race. Other than that I am very happy with the team and really no excuse for us not to have a big race.
So a total disaster then?

What happened to Tzortzakis? He was the only one, who finished way behind the peloton. At least there was Fenn to provide leadout power for Losch and even though he came up just short of Top 3 finish, I'm really content with the start. Thanks for the report and congrats to Prasad for the stage win.

Nice sprint trains! I've sort of betted that they don't work so a bit worried!
Not sure why I didn't throw Nelson at this.....
Well done to the winners! Hoping for some breakaway action from some of my guys next couple of days
