Last season there was an unexpected Paris - Roubaix Espoirs edition next to the Tour de l'Avenir, and the 2021 season will also have a cobbled monument for the youngsters to show what they got. With this season's database and Avenir teams that means for quite a lot of the youngsters they will actually have one more final race at their previous team/manager, before they are ready to start their season in their new outfits. Let's have a look at the race profile and favourites.
You got that right, same profile as the Pro Tour peloton earlier this season! A very long and hard race for the U23, so youngsters with a good stamina and resistance could and should have an advantage here as well.
| Flat | Hill | Sta | Res | Cob | Spr | Acc | Stavrakakis | 72 | 67 | 70 | 67 | 72 | 64 | 67 | Pidcock | 71 | 72 | 71 | 73 | 71 | 71 | 76 | Siric | 74 | 69 | 72 | 76 | 71 | 73 | 70 | Rutsch | 73 | 67 | 72 | 72 | 71 | 65 | 67 | Meeus | 74 | 64 | 70 | 68 | 71 | 71 | 70 | Philipsen | 70 | 67 | 70 | 68 | 70 | 76 | 76 | Vermeersch | 71 | 66 | 68 | 71 | 70 | 70 | 74 | Schmid | 71 | 71 | 69 | 74 | 69 | 69 | 72 | Leknessund | 72 | 69 | 72 | 76 | 69 | 65 | 68 | Matsangos | 67 | 68 | 69 | 67 | 69 | 61 | 68 | Van Moer | 72 | 68 | 72 | 73 | 69 | 58 | 65 | Perez | 68 | 65 | 69 | 68 | 69 | 66 | 68 | Reynders | 67 | 64 | 68 | 68 | 69 | 66 | 69 | Jorgenson | 70 | 70 | 72 | 71 | 68 | 65 | 68 | Hecht | 68 | 68 | 70 | 70 | 68 | 67 | 69 | Rojas | 66 | 68 | 69 | 67 | 68 | 65 | 69 | Stewart | 69 | 68 | 66 | 70 | 68 | 69 | 69 | Hvideberg | 71 | 67 | 68 | 70 | 68 | 61 | 64 | Hollmann | 68 | 65 | 66 | 68 | 68 | 61 | 63 | Dekker | 71 | 63 | 74 | 73 | 68 | 71 | 71 | Hesters | 69 | 61 | 68 | 72 | 68 | 71 | 72 | Stannard | 71 | 74 | 72 | 73 | 67 | 68 | 74 | Hirschi | 70 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 66 | 66 | 71 |
And we definitely spot some of those on our list above. We have Pidcock, Siric, Rutsch, Leknessund, Van Moer, Dekker, Stannard and Hirschi among others. Of course, this is still a cobbled race, so the list is currenrly ranked based on that stat. We can imagine having good puncheur abilities shouldn't hurt either, and then once again we quickly spot top talents suchs as Pidcock, Schmid, Hirschi, Stannard and Jorgenson (again). If the race ends in a (small) group sprint, Philipsen might be the top favourite.
Let's also have a quick comparison with last year's Roubaix results. None of the podium of Roubaix (Chokri, Gamper, Stokbro) is here anymore. Out of last year's top-20, still in the U23 peloton for this race are Dekker (6th), Philipsen (10th), Van Moer (18th), Stavrakakis (19th) and Suter (20th). Might have missed somebody, feel free to remind me. If you want to relive last years U23 race in hell, go to https://pcmdaily....t_1391374.
If anyone wants to make the table look a bit better, feel free to do so

Hope our trio of Pidcock, Vermeersch and Stannard can do well here Looking forward to "next year" though with Pidcock at L3 plus Vermeersch.

Re-reading that Roubaix report was a painful experience

Van Moer is going to use his TT skills to drive away like Fabian Cancellara!

Hey this is awesome! Schmid, Leknessund and Pidcock up against each other - something to get used to in the future I wonder?

Huge allround talents to face each other!
Really like Siric's stats, but it feels impossible to take a bet on a winner here. Could almost be anyone of those mentioned! |

Philipsen to put the Avenir disappointment behind him and take an unlikely win? Or can Meeus do the same? Either way, going to be an exciting race with the stars of the future lining up.
Thanks for doing this Nemo

Probably the best team result ever for McCormick in a cobbled race with 4 in the top 30 and active throughout.
Pidcock not quite able to cash in his bet on himself. Thanks for taking this on Nemo.

Some good T3A visibility in the early stages, which is all we could ask for in a race like this.

Really unfortunate to see Schmid miss out on the podium after the great work especially by Brunel. He probably won't get many chances to get a stronger cobbles result, though, given his development so far.
Thanks for the initiative, Nemo, always good to have something happening during this in-between phase

Thanks for the race! Nice little Stagiare outing for Matsangos, ahead of joining the winner in the ELCO set up.

Great race, nice to see our guys were aggressive in showing the jersey despite no longer being under contract. Thanks for the report!

This wasn't much better than Roubaix in 2020
Hopefully we can go do better when it matters although it will probably be years before we get to ride the real RVV
Thanks for this nice event
