Welcome to the 9th edition of the Kenya Mountain Classic. The route has remained the same throughout the years. A huge climb to start then a long descent and some flatter roads before another huge climb to finish the race. It's a race for the pure climbers, but unless someone can drop everyone else earlier, we can expect the race to be decided in the last kilometer or so. A good late kick can certainly help.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | AC | Wellens | 72 | 82 | 75 | 80 | 68 | Guldhammer | 68 | 81 | 77 | 75 | 76 | Padun | 67 | 81 | 77 | 74 | 75 |
Wellens should be the strongest rider here. He tops everyone in MO and RS, his only slight weakness is a lower AC stat. Which makes the next two riders difficult opponents. Guldhammer has already proved he can duke it out with the best in PT let alone PCT. He's not averse to a stinker here or there, but he's the fastest rider here and his climbing doesn't fall short of the best. No Pluchkin for Popo4Ever, but Padun is also great. A very similar rider to Guldhammer.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | AC | Latour | 69 | 80 | 75 | 78 | 74 | Quintana | 68 | 82 | 74 | 76 | 66 | Oomen | 71 | 81 | 75 | 77 | 69 | Spilak | 68 | 81 | 78 | 75 | 68 | Galta | 69 | 81 | 73 | 79 | 66 |
Latour can do a bit of everything, but he maybe wouldn't want the last climb to be too hard for his 80 MO. Quintana on the other hand might want to make it hard as he's among the slower riders. Oomen and Spilak are riders who should be able to adjust to the situation on the road. Not the strongest or fastest, but still very good. Galta could team up with Quintana to make the final climb hard.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | AC | Warchol | 70 | 80 | 74 | 77 | 70 | Penasa | 70 | 80 | 74 | 72 | 76 | Schelling | 71 | 80 | 75 | 76 | 70 | Shikai | 72 | 81 | 71 | 76 | 66 | Henao Montoya | 68 | 80 | 69 | 76 | 70 | Carapaz | 69 | 80 | 71 | 76 | 65 | Nerz | 70 | 80 | 72 | 72 | 68 | Faglum Karlsson | 71 | 79 | 73 | 75 | 68 | Amador | 66 | 80 | 71 | 68 | 66 |
It would be difficult to see anyone from tier III winning this race, but a podium or top 5 is perhaps possible. Warchol and Schelling are both solid allrounders. Penasa is one of the fastest climbers, but can he follow the best to use his acceleration in the end? Shikai is the best climber in this tier, but among the slowest. Henao Montoya is not at his best anymore, but he is a two time winner and was 2nd last year. One more big result for him in Kenya? Carapaz, Nerz and Faglum Karlsson are all pretty similar. As is Amador who is flying the flag for the CT teams. He's been in good form recently, but does it translate here?

This race has been strange I'm the past, and the final kick together with good positioning could decide it. I'd bet on Padum if I had to.

Another important race for us after Vineyards, where we aren't doing as well I had hoped. Top 10 seems like the realistic expectation here for Penasa. Hope we can get some depth points too.
Thanks for the preview red

Top 10 from Nerz and some depth points from Costagli/Koch/Tatarinov would be nice.
Thanks for the preview red.

A top 8 looks doable for Galta with a normal performance here, meaning even more is possible if he’s lucky with daily form. Not a lot of support, though, but hopefully Wohrer and Pruus, at least, are able to be with him to the foot of the final climb.
Looking forward to the race. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. Wellens must fancy his chances, but at the same time, I’m sure he fears both Padun and Guldhammer if they are all together when the final kilometer starts. |

No Pluchkin certainly opens this up a bit. Not sure the long, gradual climbing and uphill finish helps Guldhammer utilize his puncheur/sprinting skillset to its best, but he's still in with a chance as much as anyone.
Top 10 is the baseline goal, but a since this is C1 now, a top 5 is more of what's needed points wise if we're legitimately making a promotion play. Not enough minor points available to play the depth game.
Thanks for the preview!

Strong startlist as expected, I´ll take top 10 from here. Regarding to Latour´s approach, I would prefer, for once, wheelsucking as long as possible instead of (most likely) desperate and useless attack with 10 or 7km to go
May the best rider win.
Thanks for the preview!

These C1 races didn't go very well for my team, but then again the competition is tougher here too. Time to move on and hope for better results in other races.
Thank you very much for the preview and report!

Expected more from Penasa, didn't have the legs to sustain . Decent from Talansky though. 12th and 14th again!
Congrats to Polar and thanks for the report red

I think Warchol is genuinely broken, he’s fucking awful. Again doesn’t even try.
Thanks for the report.

Well, Guldhammer went earlier than I would have wanted, but it clearly worked out for Latour. He just didn't have the same legs today. The profile didn't suit him perfectly and the tactics didn't work out.
Alas, C1 is C1, and he's had plenty of success this year. 9th is still within our baseline goal range. More concerned about Warbasse, who seemingly offered zero assistance and is outside the top 40. Worried about him leading in the Tour of America.
Congrats to beagle! Latour didn't need to wheelsuck this time. And thank you to redordead for a captivating report!

Not the best performance by Spilak, but eighth is also not too terrible of course. Great ride by Latour, Spilak thought he had the same legs for a second, but soon realized he did not Nice to see Munoz score some points as well in the peloton!
Thanks for the captivating report indeed, red, pleasant read as always. Congratulations to beagle!

Nerz saving his legs at Vineyards to put in an impressive performance for 5th place. No attacking heroics this time, just steady pacing.
Thanks for the report red and congrats to beagle.

7th isn't bad. Can't complain with the strength of the startlist there.

More than expected from Galta! Very happy to see him finally finding his way as our leader, this was a brilliant performance for 4th place.
Labour was super strong here, no question who was the strongest on the day. Congratulations, beagle! |
