Giro del Trentino Preview
The history
Welcome to Italy for the 2022 edition of the Giro del Trentino. This race has been on the calendar since 2010, but after having some “controversial” winners with Nocentini, Ricco and Brajkovic, the sponsors dropped out and the race was cancelled after the 2016 edition.
But good news, the race returned in 2019! Officially it’s only a small C2 race nowadays, but everyone knows the big history of this race. It is here were Thibaut Pinot secured promotion for Project: Africa last year, meaning he won’t be returning to defend his title.
The route
We start off with 28K team time trial around Bassano del Grappa, which is actually in Veneto rather than Trentino. But yeah, good luck planning a flat race in Trentino I guess. Most riders will know what to do for the next two days after this one finishes. Some can just follow, some will have to attack big. But they’ll have every opportunity for it.
Stage 2 brings us from Bassano del Grappa to Punta Veleno. Which, again, is not in Trentino but in Verona. This time I have no excuses, there are plenty of climbs in Trentino! Anyway, there are some climbs along the middle part of the stage, giving chances for the breakaway to steal the KoM jersey here. The Punta Veleno is a steep climb that should decide the GC.
Well maybe decide is bit too much, because stage 3 is also a monster. The good news is, we’re technically in Trentino for this stage. The bad news is it’s South Tyrol, so pretty much everyone speaks German. There’s two big bad climbs on the way from Kaltern to Bozen, but they’re quite far from the finish line. A descend and a more or less flat part in the end make it hard for attackers to gain time here.
The startlist
There’s an interesting mix of PCT and CT teams here, with the PCT obviously not bringing their best squads. Let’s go through the teams one by one.
Aramco has a great team for the TTT, after that they’ll count on Borisavljevic to finish it. Fernandez could provide some good support here. BWT has a very similar lineup, although Kozhatayev will have less support in the mountains. The Crabpack is here as well, probably mistaking this for a cobbled race. Not enough depth in their TTT squad and Serry is just much worse then most other leaders. cycleYorkshire relies on Kennaugh, but he just has no support for either the TTT nor the mountains.
Next up is everyone’s favourite team, Eddie Stobart. Damion Drapac is here to target the flat stages, while Lovik hopes for some kind of GC result. Eurosport has Pantano with actual support, but they really have to be careful not to drop him in the TTT. Gjensidige brings their mountain train with Roson, Salinas and Martin, but they might have forgotten their TTT squad. Good old Dan Martin will lead a very decent Glanbia squad.
Kraftwerk also brings a really strong mountain team with ok TTT support, Costagli should lead the team. No one knows what Lierse is doing here, their manager declined to comment on this horrible team. Los Pollos has Affonso, but with very limited support. Pas Normal brings some of the best climbers here with Aru, Ratiy and Shapira, but they’ll have to make up time after the TTT. Tafjord is in a similar situation with 4 good climbers but no time trailers.
Popo also brings a few good climbers who will have to work together to beat the better ones. The same story for UBS so we can save the best for last. Volcanica has the best climber with Amador, great support with Brenes and a decent enough TTT squad to limit the losses.

Was a bit silly not bringing full time trial team. I wasted half of them in South Africa. Hopefully they should still be good enough to set up Dan Martin for a solid GC.
Lovely preview and geography lesson

I guess we had 3 mandatory C2 racedays left..
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Definitely not a big scoring race for us, but some points from an attack or lower GC place are always welcome Thanks for the preview!

Thank you for the preview Ollfardh!!
We decided against bringing Mas here for the benefit of our TTT set-up although it’s not our strongest, we do have Thomas, Castrillo and Noia.
Borisavljevic definitely a capable climber but may struggle in the Mountains vs Amador. He’s very similar to Kozhatayev so that’ll be a good battle.
Hoping for a win or, at the least, a Top 3 here. Good luck to all

Ouch ! 2 dreadful TTTs for Glanbia today. Serves me right for splitting the TT team. I'm still hopeful Dan the man can salvage something out of the big mountains. We'll done BWT,really showing up Glanbia in the CT this year in TTT, Aramco too

Thanks for the preview and report.
Kraftwerk TTT has kept Costagli in with a good chance of a top 10 finish.

That’s a pretty good result! Wasn’t our strongest TTT set-up so I’m pretty happy with 2nd and limiting the gap to BWT. In the end, Volcanica a bit closer than I was hoping which very much means it’ll be decided in the Mountains.
Thank you for a very detailed and comprehensive TTT report and congrats to BWT!

Top-5 would have been amazing, but a bad third section sees us finish ninth. Still a decent result I think congratulations to BWT!

Krnnaugh has done OK in these types of races in the past but as you've said, he'll have no support here as I've brought the young ones here with him. We didn't do as badly as I'd thought in the TTT so hopefully we can grab a top 10 here.

Not an awful stage from Borisavljevic but not great either. I can understand him finishing behind the likes of Amador and Roson but he's a better climber than Salinas and on par with Martin so he shouldn't be losing time to them.
3rd in the GC right now wouldn't be a bad result but it's bound to be a pretty interesting final stage. The finish coming after the descent of the final climb does still present opportunities for opportunistic riders to attack.
Hopefully he ends up not losing time to anyone behind him and maybe even gains!
Thank you for another great report and very much looking forward to a thrilling final stage

Good stage for Kraftwerk.
Costagli hanging with the big boys for 4th in GC.
Helme leading the U25 with Dulanjana joining him in the top 20.
Tricky third stage to survive.
Thanks for the report and congrats to MacC.

Very nice to see Pieter Serry so active in stage 2 & 3, rewarding himself with the KOM jersey. Couldn't expect more from this race!
Congrats DarkWolf with the GC and thanks Abhi for the reports!

Ah man was just to comment on Stage 2 saying how great Dan Martin is and then I saw Stage 3. Still a good race overall.
Amador really the man to beat in the CT mountains! Well done DarkWolf
