Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/P.jpg

After yesterday’s tricky finish, we have a “proper” sprint stage today. Unless you count those short hills as a significant distraction, which they shouldn’t for the elite sprinters we have here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/01.jpg

We have a few more attackers than yesterday. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Viviani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png English lead the way, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Menten and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Bjerg follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/02.jpg

But once again, the peloton is picky. They catch that group, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Monk attacks and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Resell tries to follow, but the sprinter teams immediately raise the pace again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/03.jpg

Over the first mountain sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Roosen have gotten away a little bit, as has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Stannard (who takes third) ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Mudgway. But will they be allowed to go?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Roosen yes, the others no. The Huski rider takes the second mountain sprint, leaving both at 10 (far away from the 22 of KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Polnicky takes 2 at the front of the peloton, which is 4 minutes behind the breakaway at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/06.jpg

Here’s a quick look at the bump which the riders will have to cross some 10 kilometres from the finish line. As you can see, it’s not very steep and shouldn’t pose any type of problem.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Potts just barely beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Roosen at the final mountain sprint of the day, both setting themselves up well for a potential polkadots challenge tomorrow. Another 2 points for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Polnicky, the gap is down to under 2 minutes and the sprinter teams pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png ISA, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Festina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Isostar have started to assist Moser in the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/08.jpg

With said chase almost completed with 28 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Roosen gives it another shot. But both he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Potts are caught barely 2 kilometers later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Isostar are really pushing the pace and the peloton is strung out. There’s a pretty strong wind of over 30 km/h which is gonna be a full on headwind at the finishing straight, so sprinters need to be careful not to start too early …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/11.jpg

Having spent most of their domestiques on that pace-setting, Isostar aren’t able to set a proper train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, so the Colombian follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vincent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu behind him.

On their right, we have a long train set up by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Koretzky for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Bertilsson. Still over 3 kilometers to go and remember, they’re heading into a strong headwind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/12.jpg

Onto the finishing straight, there’s been quite some chaos. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Farantakis came from behind to take over as the final leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, but that maneuvre left their captain briefly alone in the wind and throws other leadouts into disrepair. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely remained in the French’s wheel, as did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria and company latched onto that one remaining train. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu are hit hardest, they find themselves at the end of the queue.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/13.jpg

More chaos! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Santos came to the front on the right to support pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, who jumped on his teammate’s wheel, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers didn’t get the memo and is left alone in the wind in the middle of the road. Up ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard has already taken over, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger remaining in his slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard is already fading, what a mess by Festina! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger now in the lead, but the others are closing in quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Swift are also still in play, although the latter two don’t seem particularly in a hurry …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb shoots into the lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard are engulfed by their chasers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi leading the way on both flanks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb still in the lead with 400 meters to go, but can he hold on?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/18.jpg

No! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi passes him inside the final 200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit is done, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria are still very speedy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/19.jpg

It’s a three men fight for the win …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/20.jpg

… and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh takes it! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi misses his timing by just a few meters and even gets overtaken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, who finishes second and, after his 5th place yesterday, takes over yellow! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh meanwhile slips into white.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb just barely holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers, but that 5th place is enough to move up to 2nd in the GC ahead of today’s stage winner for Eislers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Grosu comes from way behind to pip pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Hsu at the line and finish 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit comes in 8th for his second consecutive Top 10 finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Nederland/S2/22.jpg

Second consecutive Top 10 finish as well for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard, though he certainly hoped for better than 9th. As good as his leadout may have been yesterday, it didn’t work at all today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Santos gets the final Top 10 spot ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Enger, that headwind wasn’t at all kind to them.

On the right side of the screen, you can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare leading a group over the line that includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, both certainly disappointed today by coming far, far too late to the sprint party, but both are still very much in play for the GC after their good results yesterday and considering their puncheur skills for tomorrow. Another surprising absence in the sprint was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Ahlstrand, who did not seem to even really try and ends up in 30th place.

The Top 4 in the GC at the end of the stage are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, separated by just 3 seconds. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke at + 10, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi at +13 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Demare in 7th at +16, same time for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb in 8th place.
