Praha-Karlovy Vary-Praha ![](../images//flags/CZ.png)
Preview by ivaneurope, reports will be made by Nemolito
We're heading to the Czech Republic for a race that has been part of the PT system for its entire existence - Praha-Karlovy Vary-Praha. Initially a one-day race for its first there editions, in 2016 it had evolved into a 4-stage race and that format has been retained ever since. In the history of this race in its current stage race format there has been no other overall winner than Taylor Phinney - he won the first three wins as member of the now defunct RBC Pro Cycling, in 2019 he won as a member of Grieg-Maersk and last season he won while wearing the colors of Isostar-Specialized. He practically owns this race so much that Isostar-Specialized have decide to...field him once again in his quest to keep his throne for a sixth straight edition. But will he win it all again, or will someone else finally dethrone him in the 4-stage era?
The profile has been the same since 2016. The riders will make a short prolouge in Prague before departing the beautiful Czech capital towards Karlovy Vary. There the riders will need to ride 60 km against the clock which will be the key to the GC classification. And finally the riders will head back to Prague with the first half offering a more hilly terrain - perfect for KOM hunters (this stage will be the only one that offers KOM points), and a final half with a mainly flat terrain.
Rider | FL | HI | TT | RS | PL | Phinney | 73 | 77 | 83 | 74 | 83 | Würtz | 77 | 71 | 82 | 78 | 79 | Vlatos | 72 | 66 | 81 | 71 | 81 | Durbridge | 73 | 67 | 81 | 74 | 81 | Paillot | 70 | 71 | 80 | 74 | 80 | Wirtgen | 73 | 75 | 80 | 75 | 80 | Yatsevich | 70 | 68 | 80 | 81 | 80 | Sütterlin | 71 | 65 | 80 | 77 | 80 | Viennet | 72 | 67 | 80 | 75 | 80 | Mullen | 75 | 70 | 80 | 74 | 78 | Viviani | 78 | 66 | 79 | 77 | 79 | Oliveira | 70 | 72 | 79 | 72 | 79 | Schädlich | 69 | 63 | 79 | 69 | 79 | Hepburn | 71 | 66 | 79 | 77 | 79 | Tanfield | 73 | 63 | 79 | 75 | 79 |
Guess it'll be another Phinney affair by the looks of it. But it's not set in a stone until everybody has finished. Würtz finished 2nd last year, nearly 2 minutes behind and would want to be closer to the leader than the 4th placed rider being closer to him. Vlatos finished 20th in 2019, but was outside Top 30 last season and would want to do better considering that he's in decline, but still productive in the TT department. Riders like Durbridge and Paillot also have chance to challenge Phinney on their best day in the TT, but most likely will be Top 10 lock though the cycleYorkshire rider ended 16th last year.
Rider | PL | Phinney | 83 | Andersen | 83 | Leung | 82 | Chavanne | 82 | Vlatos | 81 | Durbridge | 81 | Dennis | 81 | Schomber | 81 | Kemboi | 81 | Paillot | 80 | Wirtgen | 80 | Yatsevich | 80 | Sütterlin | 80 | Viennet | 80 | Ganna | 80 |
The number of the riders with Prolouge 80 or greater is 15 - meaning that the odds of any of these riders to reign supreme in the 5 km opener in Prague are great. But just because their PRL is 80+ doesn't automatically mean that they're lock for the win - a wildcard could enter and disrupt the order in the end. Though 5-time winner Phinney and Andersen have 83 PRL they are aware that they have to watch out for the competition.
Rider | FL | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Coquard | 73 | 67 | 71 | 74 | 84 | 83 | Degenkolb | 76 | 69 | 73 | 71 | 84 | 81 | Lo Cicero | 71 | 63 | 70 | 62 | 83 | 77 | Ahlstrand | 74 | 67 | 74 | 73 | 83 | 82 | Swift | 72 | 66 | 70 | 67 | 82 | 79 | Van der Lijke | 73 | 76 | 73 | 71 | 82 | 79 | Guerao | 73 | 64 | 70 | 63 | 82 | 75 | Enger | 73 | 69 | 71 | 73 | 81 | 78 | Van Poppel | 72 | 64 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 78 | Samolenkov | 74 | 64 | 75 | 71 | 81 | 79 | Kemboi | 78 | 63 | 74 | 77 | 80 | 80 | Moser | 72 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 80 | 79 | Rowe | 78 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Cavendish | 69 | 61 | 68 | 65 | 79 | 75 | Bertilsson | 73 | 69 | 72 | 71 | 79 | 77 |
Even though the TT on Stage 3 will most likely decide the GC, there are two stages that are likely to end up in a mass sprint. Coquard may have not won a stage last year, he is still the top sprinter in this race. His chief challenger will be Degenkolb. Lo Cicero may be in the start of his decline, but he is still a decent sprinter, while at the age of 35 Cavendish will be riding in this race.

I kinda hated to send Taaramae here but after having done a few calculations, it seemed like the best choice for his final RDs since all those long 8 day races on my schedule didnt fit into the calculation anymore and/or might be better suited to Lopez. I'm counting on the idea that his superior climbing to most other 79-80 TT guys should give him an edge on the long TT and should give me a fairly save top ten despite not being listed in the preview.
Chavanne / Stoltz for the prologue as always. Time to beat that Schomber dude.
Phinney is the obvious winner. |

Can only hope for good daily forms by my 3 79 time trialists.
A top10 can be in reach, but so far the TT results weren`t that impressive. |

A big race for us. On a good day it's possible to beat Phinney, but a place on the podium will be our big goal for the race. It's probably more or less the perfect TT for Würtz. so fingers crossed for a good performance.
Nice prologue chance for Kragh as well. He showed himself in Qatar and could be able to do the same here. Podium on the prologue and in the TT will be our goals, and hopefully we can challenge for a win or two.

On paper we should get a top 5GC and a stagewin or two from this race, but we rarely do what we expect here.

Van Poppel was our best bet to score something here, but looking at the other sprinters, I doubt he can do much. Still, it will be his first race of the season so let's see how this game treats him.

Jungels rocked a 5th place in GC here last season, so anything can happen, for a lot of time triallists. Got plenty of dice rolls here to try for a result, of course would like to see Wirtgen leading the way.

We've been consistently great here, 5th 6th 9th 4th 10th ever since this became a TT race.
With Sütterlin, who brought home all but one of these Top 10s, showing off his German ITT jersey alongside an improved Ganna, I'm hopeful we can continue our successful stretch of results here.
Ganna has become dangerous enough to aim for the white jersey without having to fear the undulating long TT or the hills on stage 4, and we stacked up on that rider type this season with Conci and Kämna for a triple U25 threat.
Cavagna and Stüssi (who contributed the 4th place thanks to the breakaway weirdness in 2019) also won't fear splits on the final day as long as the positioning is right, and so we come here with a very deep squad that I hope can accumulate lots of minor points alongside one major performance.
But then again, we're talking about time trials.

Decent from Ganna, really bad from Jasha yet again.
Loved to see Lennard getting mentioned and doing so well though!
Filippo got unlucky being placed second to last from that +7s group and last among U25 riders, but maybe he can participate in the sprint tomorrow and use his 69sp to get into white.

This will be Vlatos’ last season at Festina unless we change the version back. I can’t live with a top 5 contender always missing top 50. I think he scored 2 points from timetrials this year, and all of his best races are now done.

Solid rode by Chavanne. Unfortunately narrowly missing out on the big stage points but this is the sort of performance i expect from him. |

Great ride by Belevics, decent by Kragh and poor from Würtz. Not the start we hoped for, but Belevics at least getting a few points that we hadn't anticipated.
Hopefully the poor prologue from Würtz means he will have a great day in the TT.

Looks like we don't have much luck here either. Good to see Lammertink in the breakaway, but Van Poppel not even cracking the top 10 is not good at all.

Leung!
Already the second prologue victory for Leung this season. Obviously I'm very happy about that. Already since last year he either completely fails in the prologues or he wins, there is no in between.
Smart move by Evonik to send Stoltz into the break. Luckily for me he did not get enough bonus seconds for the yellow jersey.
Im anxious about the second TT, hopefully Leung fights and hangs on to a decent GC position. The leader jersey hopefully gives him a small bonus! |

Solid through the stage. Good that we were alert and managed to close the gap.
Looked like Würtz had a good day, so hopefully another on of those tomorrow!

Stoltz <3
Great effort there, perfect strategy and he gets rewarded with a few ranking points. Love it.
Now give me a +5 day for Taaramae
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!
