Tour of Southland
Note: There will be a profile picture with KOMs for each stage report
Welcome to the 8th edition of the Tour of Southland. This is a race for the riders that like hills. Well more exactly for riders that like one hill. Two of the five stages that are mostly flat, end in a hilltop finish. That's what decides the winner of this race. The gaps between the favourites are often small or non-existent. Apart from that there are also 3 flat stages for the sprinters. The best and most consistent sprinter tends to come away with the points jersey, but we haven't yet seen a sprinter challenge for a top GC place, because only the top 3 stage results offer bonus seconds.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | Hagen | 75 | 68 | 83 | 71 | 71 | 76 | Borges | 70 | 70 | 80 | 73 | 71 | 81 | Kelderman | 70 | 71 | 82 | 75 | 67 | 72 | Boswell | 70 | 71 | 80 | 73 | 65 | 76 | McCarthy | 70 | 67 | 81 | 75 | 65 | 74 | Moscon | 71 | 73 | 79 | 77 | 59 | 73 | Betancourt | 69 | 73 | 80 | 71 | 67 | 74 | Prevar | 72 | 71 | 80 | 70 | 67 | 73 | Edmondson | 70 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 70 | 76 | Chaves | 70 | 76 | 79 | 73 | 60 | 72 | Van Stayen | 75 | 63 | 78 | 69 | 83 | 76 | Müller | 70 | 65 | 80 | 71 | 66 | 72 | Dowsett | 69 | 64 | 79 | 68 | 65 | 70 |
We have a strong list of puncheur here to contest the overall win. Top favourite has to be MG legend Hagen who has returned to try and once again dominate the PCT division. He'll face stiff competition from an explosive rider like Borges or top quality puncheurs such as Kelderman and McCarthy. Representing perhaps the best of the CT division is Boswell, and speaking of CT. Moscon will try to revive his rivalry with Kelderman from last year and challenge the best.
Betancourt is proven at this level and at this race, finishing in the top 5 in both of the last two editions. Don't forget last year's runner up Prevar as well. Edmondson and Chaves bring different skills sets, but even more quality from CT. Van Stayen is a unique hilly sprinter who will try to use the sprint stages to his advantage. Müller get leadership from UBS in the absence of Ponzi, as does Dowsett for Eurosport x GCN.
| FL | HI | RS | SP | AC | Reinhardt | 71 | 67 | 66 | 79 | 84 | Maksimov | 71 | 59 | 67 | 80 | 82 | Vesely | 73 | 68 | 68 | 81 | 80 | Halvorsen | 76 | 65 | 71 | 80 | 80 | Van Stayen | 75 | 78 | 69 | 83 | 76 | Selig | 71 | 65 | 68 | 79 | 81 | Wippert | 70 | 67 | 70 | 78 | 82 | Kump | 73 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 79 | Perera | 71 | 64 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Appollonio | 74 | 66 | 66 | 81 | 78 | Nelson | 71 | 59 | 63 | 80 | 80 | Lutsyshyn | 70 | 54 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Nizzolo | 73 | 64 | 67 | 80 | 79 | Bouhanni | 74 | 63 | 69 | 80 | 77 |
The 3 flat stages have attracted a fair number of quality sprinters. Reinhardt hasn't had a good start to life in PCT, but still possesses his unique acceleration with which he can win races. Maksimov will be thinking in a similar way. The Russian has also won the points jersey here in 2019. Vesely is another great sprinter capable of winning every race and the young Halvorsen is quickly making a name for himself also. But Van Stayen might be the sprinter with the most pressure here as he carries GC responsibilities for Carrefour as well.
We have some quality CT sprinters here with riders like Selig, Wippert and veteran Kump. Perera will want to improve from his no show in Portugal. Appollonio has dropped from PT to CT, but has the top end speed to win races. Nelson doesn't fancy difficult stages so these would suit him to a tee. Lutsyshyn, Nizzolo and Bouhanni aren't household names, but you never know what can happen in a sprint.

I have 3 hopes here.
1. Paez is somewhat present in the Uphill finish stages. He’s got the FTR stat and the SPR/ACC to put up some kind of challenge.
2. Abdul Halil tries to sprint. Not expecting much but it’d be nice.
3. We’re active in the breakaways.
Other than that, thank you for the preview and good luck to all!

Tough field around here, but I do love New Zealand and because of that I'm glad the team is competing here. Chaves is on the favorites list but with such strong competition I would be happy if he finishes the race in top 10/top 15. I would also like for Gabriel Marin to be present in the sprints. Not to win, mind you, but to make an effort there. Some presence in the breakaways would be very nice as well.
Thank you for the preview and good luck to everyone! |

No GC ambitions for us at all, but would be nice to see Maksimov take a stage win. It will be interesting to see how the cooperation with Manarelli as a domestique works out. Thank you for the preview!

Hope Edmondson can put out a strong showing for BNZ here to get the Kiwi fans onboard

Thanks for the preview! Looking primarily at stages 2 and 4 here since they should suit Kump!

The only race where Hagen and Vesely clash. Last year a similar situation with Claeys ruined the latter so hopefully the AI has become smarter. As long as Hagen wins this thing by an hour.

This will be a tough race for my team. I hope my team can get a few points at least from this race.
Thanks for preview redordead.

Time to test out our new Sprinter, Ricki Nelson, tough field though.
Maybe Martin and Haas can stick with the top puncheurs and land some GC points.
Thx for preview, good luck all

No idea what to expect. Hope that at least one of Ndayisenga, Vendrame, Eyob or Vliegen can do something on the uphill finishes. Perera was crap in Portugal, but I've also brought Stallaert here, who had some race days to spare. Maybe the two of them can work together to get a result? Lastly, hopefully we are active in breakaways, as a last resort to score some points. Thanks for the preview red, and good luck to everyone!

A race we are quite content to avoid. Should be a decent indicator for some important riders this year.

Slightly nervous about Van Stayen here given the startlist, hoping that it turns out better than I'm imagining. On the positives I do think he should be in quite solid contention on most of the stages, even though we have brough more of sprint-support based team rather than other puncheurs (out of worry of potential weird PCM leader issues)
Thanks for the preview! |

Don't really know what to expect from Moscon here. Definitely some really strong pure puncheurs, but especially the stage 4 hill looks pretty long. So hopefully his great Res and solid Mo should kick in.
On the other hand, Reinhardt finally has to deliver. Stocker and Habtom are here to support him, hopefully he'll get a couple of good stage results. But the competition is strong as well...
Thanks for the preview, and good luck everyone!

This is always a sort of lottery-race. It'd be important for us to see Borges shine here. Let's see. Good luck everyone!

Boswell's first C1 adventure, glad to see startlist isn't overwhelming but agree the AI can go many ways on these kind of stages.
First chance to see if Tivani can leverage his res to pick up cheap sprint points. Field might be a bit deep for that.

Vesely sprinted, that is good, though the result could have been better. Hagen in the front few positions leads me to suspect the AI can actually handle this multi-leadership now Looking forward to the rest of the stages!

It's good that Perera was sprinting, but his positioning was bad, started too far behind and didn't have the punch to get to the front. Progress, though. Thanks for the report!
