Breakaway of the Day
156km
P ⇤ 2'07" ⇥ E1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/2.jpg
Pulling in the Pack:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Evgenii Tikhonin
One of the quieter mornings we have seen in Tachira. The initial attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Akhmaevi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Knotten being the conclusive one.

There was an effort to bridge across, coming from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Main, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Otruba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png O'Loughlin, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Hollmann, but they were unable to cross the gap. Their efforts did, however, result in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Knotten being dislodged from the front group. Evidently his efforts in previous days had drained the legs.

Nobody a challenge to the General Classification, nor strong enough to really threaten for a stage victory even, so the peloton was content to let them go. No doubt the trio in the break would be looking to score points in the contest for polkadots.

First Ascent of San Juan de Colón

A new name in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Zingle emerged as one of those controlling the peloton's pace, replacing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Tikhonin in our usual triplex. Perhaps a sign that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling wasn't feeling quite up to par?

At the front, it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Akhmaevi who dragged his colleagues up the final few slopes, but in a drag to the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister managed to force his way to the fore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Andersen added insult to injury by relegating the Georgian to third.

First Intermediate Sprint

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Tikhonin's absence was only temporary, so perhaps the adjustment spoke more to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Avelino feeling strong than anything regarding pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling.

At the base of today's climb it was again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Akhmaevi who led into the final kilometre, although this time he was able to keep both his compatriots behind him.

Second Ascent of San Juan de Colón

The directeur sportifs appeared more interested in keeping the break in check than protecting their sprinters. They cut a significant chunk off the gap heading up this climb. A dangerous toll given the difficulties many sprinters were subjected to yesterday.

This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Andersen was in the lead with a kilometre remaining, but again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister showed his superiority on the (admittedly minor) slopes. His dual victories where enough to push him into the provisional polkadots.

The same order, achieved in the same manner, as the first time through. The gap didn't drop as rapidly on the descent as it had on the ascent, but it was still reducing.

Inevitably, the gap came down to zero. Again it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe - CC and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Glanbia Foods doing the majority of the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Andersen launched out on his own which, despite it momentarily looking like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister might bridge across, was enough to see him the final man brought back into the fold.

The Trains Form
8km
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/8.jpg
Whilst pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Campenaerts kept the pace high, the trains began to form. Our two workhorses were also the two forming trains: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe - CC and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Glanbia Foods. Best positioned to take advantage of this were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Lavoine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling.

Confusion in the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Glanbia train as they managed to lose track of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Bennett, instead it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Marin surfing along on their wheels. Equally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Gaspar might have jad pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling attached, but he was the only one left in front of the sprinter with an entirely unreasonable distance remaining.

The only train that had really assembled well was that from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Crabbe - CC. They had delivered pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Krieger a brilliant victory in the last flat stage, and looked to be on for a possible repeat performance.

Confusion for Crabbe - CC
3000m
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/10.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Liepins was in for a berating after the stage; he couldn't follow the wheel in front of him in the train, completely destroying its cohesion. That pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling had been dislodged from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Gaspar offerred a level of conciliation.

Except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Bennett had somehow managed to find his way back to the rear of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Glanbia Foods' train that was rapidly making its way up the right-hand side. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Marin evidently was not comfortable with the pace, and had dropped back a handful of lengths.

Green jersey wearer pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Keough was nowhere near the front, and had made no effort to move into a superior position.

Liepins is Done
1400m
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/12.jpg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Liepins may have brought his man to the fore, but he also forced pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Krieger to open his sprint well before the red kite. Unless he could pull off something incredible the German was simply to act as a leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bwt.png Losch, who had slotted in behind.

Rannieres into the Lead
700m
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/13.jpg
He certainly wouldn't have been expecting it, but with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Oram's rapid drop off slowing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Ranneries was catipulted into the lead. The Dane had started his sprint early, feeling it the only way to have a chance at victory given his poor starting position.

He would need to keep as much momentum as possible, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Jiang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Lavoine not far behind.

Marin Surges to the Front
400m
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/14.jpg
Evidently the Costa Rican had the right of it when he decided that the pace was too high earlier on, as he timed his own sprint to perfection. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Ranneries hadn't had the discipline to hold off, and was suffering for his early acceleration by this point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ccc.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Bennett had both rapidly faded after their respective leadouts left them stranded more than a kilometre out.

The only real challenge was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Lavoine, but he too was starting to fade. Perhaps if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gct.png Avelino could've found another gear - but that was looking unlikely. Instead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Gross and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Tzortzakis looked like they might come through to challenge for the minor placings.

Marin Wins
fin.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C2/Tachira/S5/15.jpg
An intelligent victory for an underdog, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Marin secured a stage victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Volcanica - Fox. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/taf.png Ranneries was followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Lavoine to complete the podium.

Although some commentators will no doubt lament that the latter duo mistimed their own sprints, the number of lengths by which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Marin was victorius suggests that he was not only the superior decisionmaker today, but also flatout the fastest of the fastmen.
