Herald Sun Tour
Welcome to the 11th edition of the Herald Sun Tour where the top CT Time Trialists get to fight over the GC win and all the sprinters who decided to dodge the sprinter’s race in Poland get to fight over 4 flat stages. For the third year in a row the race is at the C2HC level. Last year Morten Reckweg won GC battle while Steele Von Hoff won a stage and the points jersey to crown himself the top sprinter in the race.
The all-important time trial is Stage 4 and covers 20km, all flat. Top contenders include:
| FL | TT | PR | RS | | Dumoulin | 71 | 78 | 78 | 76 | Sterbini | 68 | 78 | 78 | 73 | Cruz | 75 | 78 | 78 | 72 | Li | 75 | 78 | 78 | 68 | Ford | 60 | 78 | 78 | 59 | Quaade | 71 | 78 | 76 | 70 | Ghyselinck | 74 | 77 | 77 | 77 | Downey | 73 | 77 | 77 | 74 | Oram | 73 | 77 | 77 | 72 | Sebright | 69 | 77 | 77 | 70 | Laizer | 70 | 77 | 76 | 71 | Hamza | 74 | 76 | 79 | 73 | Gretsch | 70 | 76 | 78 | 70 | Kiflay | 74 | 76 | 77 | 70 | Craddock | 71 | 76 | 76 | 75 | Koren | 71 | 76 | 76 | 72 | Steensen | 73 | 76 | 76 | 72 | Ignatiev | 76 | 76 | 76 | 68 | Maccagli | 72 | 75 | 75 | 71 | Norsgaard | 71 | 75 | 73 | 71 |
The top 6 riders all have the same time trial value, with Dumoulin, Cruz and Li having the best secondary values. Cruz finished second last year (winning the TT but losing the GC on bonus seconds) and was 1 of 3 Glanbia riders in the top ten, joined by Downey and Sebright. Both of them are back and on the favorites list along with Ford and Craddock. So Glanbia will be looking for another big score. Project Africa also put 4 riders on the list of favorites, although none as near the top.
But to score those GC points the TT riders need to finish in the front group on the flat stages (Stages 1, 2, 3 and 5) and manage the bonus seconds from breakaways, which means their teams will have to be attentive. The riders trying to win those flat stages are:
| FL | SP | AC | RS | | Bouhanni | 74 | 80 | 77 | 69 | Van Heerden | 71 | 80 | 70 | 64 | Selig | 71 | 79 | 81 | 68 | Scully | 74 | 79 | 80 | 70 | Coutinho | 72 | 79 | 80 | 74 | Thorsen | 58 | 79 | 80 | 51 | Manarelli | 72 | 79 | 79 | 65 | Mezgec | 71 | 79 | 77 | 70 | Te Brake | 75 | 79 | 76 | 72 | Wippert | 70 | 78 | 82 | 70 | Sanikwathi | 72 | 78 | 78 | 67 | Boev | 72 | 78 | 78 | 67 | Von Hoff | 70 | 78 | 75 | 72 |
Despite the clash with the Course de Solidarnosc a number of teams have sent strong sprinters with Bouhanni, Selig, Scully, and Coutinho all near the top of the favorites list. BNZ’s Wippert has the best acceleration and last year’s points winner, Von Hoff, as a lead out man. Manarelli and Mezgec should also be competitive. Van Heerden and Thorsen are both fast finishers but have major question marks on their secondary stats.
147 riders take to the start line in Australia:

Las6 chance for Glanbia to take a win and sponsor goal. The strategy is obvious, obliterate the time trial

Good stage results are our main goal here, as I doubt we'll get a decent GC result. If Scully wins all the flat stages, then he might stay in the Top 25 despite of the TT

41 point so far during the whole season, but Sterbini with a good result might just give us the last push towards securing promotion. Manarelli is here for the sprints, and guys like Coronel, Petrovski or even Quicibal could do something in the KoM if they are allowed to get into the break.
Thanks for the preview, Ulrich!

We are here, I don't think we'll get anything out of this race unless Lobato can steal a surprise stage win so hopefully we can at least get in some breaks

I was definitely hoping for a stronger startlist here since I sent AKA to Poland, but it appears I made the wrong choice. Knowing what I know now about our leadouts, I absolutely would have sent Bertilsson here if I could do it over, and it might have actually led to some lucky results.
Instead, we're counting completely on Quaade for GC here, and we're sprinterless. Pretty bad planning by me, but I was trying to do everything to maximize AKA's chances, not knowing how the season would turn...
Hoping to get in a breakaway or two, and for Quaade to magically have a season defining performance. Thanks for the preview!

Dumoulin hasn't done as good as we had hoped this season, but this is his last chance as leader, so we're hoping he can get close to his top billing. A Top 5 is perhaps a realistic expectation. Hoping for some more Boev magic to round out an excellent season for him.
Thanks for the preview

Well, having JvH on the startlist means we won't feature in the break and we also won't feature in the sprints
Really hoping one of our 4 TTers has a +5 day and we get a good overall result.

Well that's why you bring 5 time trialists! But 2 of them losing time is bad. Can't be surprised at Ford but Craddock is inexplicable.
Downey and Cruz are my favourites anyway

Not good enough. Merino Criado was as useless as he was most of the season, and Scully just didn't pick a good wheel, way too far behind. He'll definitely have to improve his positioning! The guys beating him mostly weren't stronger, but smarter, which sucks. But well, maybe next time he'll get it done better.
Congrats to Guave anyway, Coutinho has really performed well throughout the year!

Slig is just not good to be the first rider in line to leave a train. It looked decent timing-wise at first, when he only left Naesen's wheel inside the final kilometer, but then faded as he has done so often this year when we formed a train. Another lesson for next year, I guess. Maybe we get lucky and there's a ton of tailwind, or we leave the leadouts to other teams, but I won't hold my breath. Thanks for the report Ulrich!

Not the best day for us, just as in Solidarnosc we weren't in the break and we had a hard time in the sprint. Sixth is better than nothing, but doesn't amount to much unfortunately. Hoping for better tomorrow! Thanks for the report, Ulrich

I was surprised to see Eislers on the load screen favorites list. I was not surprised to see him miss those positions. Quaade still in the pack, that's most important.
