Milano – Torino
Welcome for the 12th edition of Milano – Torino. The overlap with the Tour of Lithuania sees a weaker PCT field than usual, which also caused a lot of CT stars to come to Italy and try to win a C1 classic. None of the recent winners will be back, let’s have a look at the list of favourites.
| MTN | HILL | STA | RES | ACC | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 72 | Izagirre | 74 | 81 | 73 | 72 | 64 | Prevar | 71 | 80 | 77 | 70 | 73 | Zaini | 66 | 80 | 74 | 65 | 70 | Dowsett | 65 | 80 | 74 | 69 | 71 | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 76 | 77 | 73 | Gebrezgabihier | 70 | 79 | 74 | 74 | 69 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 76 | Meyer | 69 | 79 | 74 | 71 | 77 | Turgis | 66 | 79 | 76 | 78 | 77 | De Plus | 76 | 78 | 74 | 73 | 72 | Dyrnes | 72 | 78 | 73 | 73 | 77 | Juul-Jensen | 70 | 78 | 76 | 74 | 79 | Hugentobler | 68 | 78 | 70 | 69 | 76 | Anuar Aziz | 65 | 78 | 73 | 68 | 66 | Watson | 65 | 78 | 76 | 72 | 72 | Guldhammer | 81 | 77 | 74 | 75 | 76 | Padun | 80 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 75 |
And the top favourite even is a CT rider! Kelderman has been at the top of similar lists a lot this season, but that was in C2 and C2HC. Most of the time he got decent results, but maybe not as many wins as manager Abhishek would have hoped for. Can he handle the pressure (and the opponents) in a C1 classic? Izagirre, Prevar, Zaini and Dowsett are the other 80+ puncheurs, but taking in mind the climbing skills of the latter two, the most important rivals for the Dutchman should be the Polar and Popo4ever riders.
Moscon is another interesting soon to be PCT rider that tops the 79 puncheurs because of his good climbing capacities, which recently helped him in the Tour of Britain as well. Gebrezgabihier and the weaker climber Turgis represent the PCT among the other 79 puncheurs, whereas Edmondson and Meyer are two more CT riders to look out for.
Looking at the slightly weaker puncheurs there are some strong climbers such as De Plus, Guldhammer and Padun. Nevertheless, it would be stupid to forget about Dyrnes or Juul-Jensen, who are both able to surprise us on a good day.
That was it for the preview, my job here is done. Time for the riders to show what they got tomorrow. Good luck to everyone!

The climbs probably a bit too short for De Plus, but let's see!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I'll be happy with a top 15 here, I brought Frankiny but looking at it I don't think the climbs are going to be tough enough for him. Hopefully he can be as strong a domestique on this terrain as he has been for Ranaweera in the Mountains.

A C1 classic for JJ. Mostly a total gamble just to see if he can attack and get lucky. Another one where he's paired with Fabbro just cause of extra race days, but I don't think a hybrid will be much of a factor here.

Home race! With the finish line in Torino (or at least close by), Fiat definitely will follow this race very closely - and who knows, if Moscon lives up to the preview, they might even spend some more money next year!
Kelderman should be the favorite on those sharp climbs, but if pure climbing skills come into play, Izagirre and Moscon definitely shouldn't be ruled out - and neither all the other great climbers present here.
Thanks for the preview, and good luck everyone! (though I wish ourselves a bit more luck than we had in Romania recently...)

Can't expect Kelderman to do much here as he can't even beat CT opposition mostly. Will be happy with a top 5.
Thanks for the preview Nemo

Definitely some symbolism there, with Philips, Centovalli and Carlsberg knocking on the door of the PCT.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Kelderman
What a race for the CT teams showing up in a big way. As a PCT team not in attendance I won’t complaint one bit
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Happy for Wilco and Abhi of course

Thanks for the report, interesting race! Dyrnes with a decent result here, but too good, which should be helpful come renewals.

Was not expecting that!
So much deja vu as Kelderman took the early lead in the climb to the finish and was being chased by familiar opposition. He hung on this time and I'm thankful for that! Coming here is more than justified now.
Thanks for the report Nemo and for the congrats from everyone so far

CT representing hard with the first 4 places! Wow!
Obviously losing some scoring to Philips and Centovalli isn't ideal, but it won't threaten our promotion, so no big deal. Great to see Kelderman take a C1 win after floundering in CT at times. Congrats to Abhishek!
As for Juul-Jensen, that was about as good as it gets. Stayed near the front and out of trouble, reacted to all the moves, sprinted up the last hill. He was placed very well, but didn't have the strength to come around Moscon or Wilco, which is fine since they're stronger riders. We end up with a C1 podium and a worthy trip here. No complaints.
Thanks for another great report Nemo!

Well, would of course have loved to see some more Moscon magic on the final meters, like in Coppa Placci, but taking 2nd in a C1 race still feels great! And losing to Kelderman definitely isn't a shame, although I don't like this result ranking-wise Nonetheless, congrats to Abhi - I guess Wilco has done better in C1 races than in C2(HC) ones in general...
Still, Moscon once again showed his strength in a C1 race, I guess he's ready for that category. Up to us to find a way to get him up to HC/PTHC level during "winter" - all we currently know is that Fiat are absolutely thrilled by today's result, and are willing to contribute to a possible training
Further back, Thièry once again was really strong in a tough hilly race, and Saggiorato did a great job as well. Pernsteiner, while definitely not being a suitable leader, proved his worth as a prime domestique for Gianni once again - let's hope those guys can perform at about the same level in our next home race in Lugano!
Thanks for the thrilling report, and congrats again to Abhi.

Poor from Turgis and Guerreiro here. At least the former has had a good season overall, but the latter will need to redeem himself massively next season. Congrats to the CT trio up front, and thanks for the report! |
