In Andorra, they say the only way is up! I don't know if that's an actual saying or I dreamt it up but it definitely applies to this race! Five days of climbing, four with your teammates and the peloton and one on your lonesome against the clock. The climbers will line up for the the Tour d'Andorra to try to become the King of the Mountains! Not that classifcation only, but the General one too...
The first stage itself brings the hard stuff, with a 20 km long mountain to round things off. Stage 2 is a little bit of a respite with a moderately easier profile. It all ends uphill on the third stage again, as another long, if somewhat less steep, climb needs to be tackled to reach the finish line. This after the riders would've tackled three more hard climbs already! The fourth stage is the race up the mountain and the clock. The final stage is the longest, at 230 kilometers, and involves the riders tackling four hard climbs before the final short burst up to the finish. It's going to be a punishing five days!
This race has been a constant feature on the MG calendar since 2013. The past two winners - Suaza and Dan Martin, are both here but they'll have their work cut out to repeat that success. The who's who of PCT climbing have shown up and we look at them in detail next.
| MON | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Tenorio | 84 | 80 | 78 | 76 | 79 | 67 | Pluchkin | 84 | 78 | 77 | 77 | 77 | 73 | Eastman | 82 | 77 | 76 | 75 | 76 | 69 | Wellens | 82 | 72 | 79 | 80 | 76 | 68 | Uran | 81 | 77 | 74 | 80 | 75 | 70 | Kudus | 82 | 72 | 79 | 77 | 79 | 70 | Monsalve | 81 | 72 | 79 | 80 | 77 | 73 | Denifl | 83 | 71 | 73 | 69 | 74 | 63 | Henao Montoya | 81 | 70 | 74 | 78 | 75 | 72 | Choi | 80 | 75 | 77 | 76 | 79 | 68 | Oomen | 80 | 74 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 69 | Carthy | 81 | 67 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 69 |
Arguably the best pure stage racer in the division, Tenorio starts as top favourite, and along with Pluchkin, should be the two riders to beat in this race. The latter isn't the unbeatable force of the past couple of years but he still is top man of the division, as the rankings clearly state.
A little way below these two, but bunched up together in terms of capabilities, we find the quartet of Eastman, Wellens, Uran and Kudus. While Wellens and Kudus have had good seasons, Eastman hasn't had the best while Uran has been a little up and down but mostly up. Eastman and Uran hold the advantage in the TT, and that could become important in case of a tight race. Kudus's recovery and stamina advantage could play a key role on the final stage.
The next pair of evenly matched climbers are Monsalve and Denifl. The former will depend more on his energy skills to keep him contention while the latter is a better climber but lacks a little when it comes to backups.
Choi, Oomen, the declining Henao Montoya and Carthy are solid climbers and would be podium contenders in many races but not here. They should be Top 10 contenders and could push for Top 5s if they have a couple of good days.
| MON | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Martin | 80 | 71 | 74 | 75 | 73 | 73 | Ratiy | 80 | 74 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 58 | Nerz | 80 | 73 | 75 | 72 | 74 | 68 | Latour | 79 | 70 | 80 | 78 | 80 | 74 | Abal | 79 | 75 | 71 | 74 | 71 | 70 | De la Cruz | 78 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 75 | 73 | Padun | 80 | 65 | 72 | 74 | 76 | 75 | Garby | 79 | 68 | 71 | 76 | 75 | 70 | Konig | 78 | 73 | 73 | 74 | 70 | 65 |
Defending champion Dan Martin will probably not like finding himself in the outseiders' list but he isn't at his former abilities any more and will be looking at a Top 10 as a more realistic target.
Ratiy, Nerz and Latour will lead their respective teams, with the latter two especially always having an over-performance in them.
Abal, De La Cruz and Padun will be chief lieutenants for their respective leaders, but a race like this could see them too being among the high placings by virtue of association (read pacing) their leaders and being dropped late on.
Garby and Konig will also be the designated leaders for their team. The latter's role might nor be so clear-cut though, with Preidler also present in this race, albeit on the abck of a horrible season so far.
| MON | TT | Tenorio | 84 | 80 | Pluchkin | 84 | 78 | Eastman | 82 | 77 | Uran | 81 | 77 | Wellens | 82 | 72 | Denifl | 83 | 71 | Kudus | 82 | 72 | Monsalve | 81 | 72 | Choi | 80 | 75 | Oomen | 80 | 74 | Ratiy | 80 | 74 | Henao Montoya | 81 | 70 | Nerz | 80 | 73 | Abal | 79 | 75 | Martin | 80 | 71 | Carthy | 81 | 67 |
Most of the top names from the favourites list make a presence here as well. Tenorio is top favourite followed by Pluchkin. Ratiy, Nerz and Abal could make up some ground they lose to the stronger climbers in other stages. Carthy, Padun and Latour especially could lose out on this stage.

A huge race needed here for the team. Martin obviously quite the underdog for a good result given the field here but heās definitely still got a surprise in him so no better time to do it than right now!
Good luck to everyone and a great preview!

Thanks for the review, Abhishek! One mistake though, you forgot to put Seboka between Pluchkin and Tenorio in the favourites' table
Only thing I can hope for here is for Petrovski to join the break and get a top-8 on a stage/in the KoM to at least score one point. Every day without DNF for Quispe will be a win and will reward him with another 1k salary.
Good luck to everyone!

If Romandie's performance is anything to go by, at least Preidler won't have huge disadvantage in the TT. (at least that's the plan) However the competition there wasn't as stacked as is here.

Hoping for a decent team result from the Kraftwerk depth.
Thanks for the preview Abhi.

Final race of the season for Kudus. He's been great all season, but we need a final good showing to solidify our promotion spot after the Slovenie fiasco.
Last time we were in this race, we won it with Rafa Valls... just saying
Will be difficult to win here ofc, i'd be happy with a podium

I didn't send Ndayisenga to the Tour de Vineyards because I thought he'd have no shot with all those flat TT kilometers. Looking at the competition here, I have no idea why I thought this would be any better Would be cool to see him in the breakaway maybe one or two times, go for the KoM or even a stage win. Maybe Hadi can do something in a breakaway, too. Not much else to hope for, really. But looking forward to it nonetheless!

Go Go Tenorio! Pluchken has had his number in the past but hopefully those days are coming to an end with Pluchken on the age decline first. The Desigual boys have been on a nice run of form lately and a top result here and at the upcoming Tour of America could see us make a late push for promotion (as unlikely as that sounds after having a rough start to the season).
Good luck to everyone!

Last chance for Monsalve to score big this season, so hopefully he can do just that Stacked startlist as you would expect, but should be possible to fight for a top 5. Need Uwizeyimana, Scarponi and Bonnin to be of proper help for that to happen, though. Monsalve has often been isolated quite early in the past few races, which is never ideal.
Looking forward to the reports!

Well, have to be pretty happy with that opening stage from Martin. 6th and not too far off the GC lead and the Top 5 gives him a good position going into the rest of this race.

Hugely impressed with Carthy's ride there. Kudus 2nd instead of 3rd due to Tenorio's bad day isn't ideal in the title race, but you can't have everything |

Sucks to lose on the stage win for that tiny margin, but getting almost 2 minutes on Tenorio is huge for the podium fight. Don't think Pluchkin will struggle to win the race, but we'll see

Not a great start for Kraftwerk but 7 riders in the top 50 might mean we can improve our team placing & depth scoring in future stages?

Seboka and Petrovski both tried, but Seboka already got dropped by 70-rated climbers and Petrovski chose the wrong moment. One of these days the break might make it to the end, so the only thing I can still do is hope is Petrovski is in the break that day, and the others in the break are not too good Thanks for the report, Abhishek!
