Tour of Chile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/c2_chi.jpg

Welcome to the first ever Tour of Chile. This is a brand new race on the MG calendar and it's categorised as C2 race. Meaning we have most of the CT contingent here, along with a few teams from PCT. This is a 3 day event and all 3 stages are what we would say, medium length. It starts off with a flat stage that has a few bumps along the way. Then a hilly stage with a descent to the line and finally the last stage is the queen stage. Rated as a mountain stage it has a small downhill after the main final climb then a last uphill punch to the finish.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

GC/Climbers

FLAMONHILRESACC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro6678757674
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath7378757569
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen7278747571
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro6578757273
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez6779707779
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga6678756873
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera6680737565
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz6876768071
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse7078757365
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste7076767471
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente6977747471

There is no Pinot at this race so we consider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny as the top favourite here. The Swiss has great all round stats for this type of midmountain terrain. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro is as close as a mirror to Frankiny, but perhaps just a smidgen below. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath lacks a bit of acceleration compared to the other, but all his other stats are top notch. Another similar rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro is one of the punchiest climbers here, but he might suffer if the tempo is too hard in the leadup to the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez on the other hand prefers much more longer climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga has the raw ability, but can he hold his max effort long enough with his lower resistance? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera gives Sauber a very strong 1-2 punch and the Sri Lankan is the strongest climber here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz is an interesting rider that could profit from the hills, if his team allows him. But then he also has to hope his massive resistance can offset his lower mountain stat. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse has everything besides acceleration, so will this shared leadership with Fabbro work? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Dall'Oste is in a similar situation like Schultz, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente brings a solid array of all stats, even if none of them are quite at the top.

Puncheurs

FLAHILSTARESACC
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer7479747177
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen7378767479
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson7079757276
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking7178787476
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo6978727275
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini6680746570
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny6976727575
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan6777727274
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb7176706973
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Paulus6977716871
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo7076747370

The sole hilly stage has brought in a number of talented puncheurs to the race. But it remains to be seen if some of these riders will have carte blanche or will they work for their GC leaders. Well pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer shouldn't have that problem and he is the clear #1 puncheur here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen showed some good form in South America a couple of weeks ago. Can he go one better and score a win for Carlsberg? Will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson win or get in the way of Schultz? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking has free reign and the stats so he has to be one of the favourites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo might be itching to give Carrefour another win, after his selfless work in Argentina. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini hasn't been able to deliver much this season, but this stage might suit him.

Sprinters

FLAHILRESSPRACC
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert7067707882
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho7265747980

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eislers7472687675

Lastly let's take a look at the sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert is still looking for more wins to add to his name this year. The same can be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho. These two are the stand out sprinters here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Ranneries is equal to Wippert's speed, but his resistance works against him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger has no weakness and is therefore a safe bet for a good result. The others are all outsiders and don't get mentioned a lot in other races, but they all have a chance here. Especially someone like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev who has already shown he can upset the bigger name sprinters.

Hmmm. Bringing JJ here made sense to me on paper because he had enough race days, and there's a hilly stage that would be perfect for him. But now, I'm thinking bring both him and my climbers here was the wrong move. He doesn't have much of a shot for GC with stage 3, so he'll either do nothing on stage 2, or crack on stage 3 and leave us with no GC. The game is definitely not going to be able to manage Warbasse, Fabbro, and JJ all trying at the same time. It's just a question of who is prioritizes and in what situation.

Interested to see who emerges well from this. We just won one redordead reported stage race, why not another? Pfft

Excited to see how our team performs given the all-around nature of this race, also hoping for some good stuff out of Chamorro with the lessened field.

Also side note - sent Novak here on whim to fill his last 3 race days, maybe some more seneseless magic from him? Cool

Nemolito
Top-5 sponsor goal! Hoping for the best, but as this is not his preferred profile and looking at what has just happened in Langkawi, I'm scared Marquez will fail our goal.

I'm an idiot for not bringing a sprinter. Thank you for the preview, redordead, looking forward to the reports!

Back to back races as leader for Keinath. Wasn't sure where we'd feature in this race when signing up and still not sure about it because of Stage 2. Hope Keinath can keep his form going. Boev has done exceedingly well and hope he can spring a surprise once again. Hoping the hills don't play too much of a role.

Thanks for the preview redordead Smile

Should be interesting this race. Edmondson and Schultz and Wippert all strong riders and all have a shot at a stage win or good GC positioning. Not sure how it will go.

Good luck everybody

baseballlover312
Nothing for us to say about stage 1. Eislers finished second to last, so he clearly didn't entertain ideas of competing in the sprint.

Congrats to Guave!

I think that's by far the best I've seen from Redecker so far this year Shock really good stuff, a decent GC position, too. And neat that Carr just stumbled into those mountain points, maybe that gives him motivation to go into the breakaway tomorrow, that would be nice.

In theory, this race is perfect for Ndayisenga with his good puncheur skills. Very excited for what he can do. The climbing field in CT is just so deep that anything from ~3rd to ~12th is possible.

Nemolito
The guys tried to get in the break, that´s all they could do tbh. Too bad they didn´t get in the right break to score u25 or kom points. Now then, let´s see what marquez can do in the hills.

Not a great day for Boev but some points nonetheless. Had some early hopes with his actions in the intermediate sprint but not to be. Small unexpected bonus with Cepeda Hernandez grabbing White. Well done Smile

Thanks for the report redordead!

Damn thats annoying that Wippert got boxed in. He was looking good! Still a good result. Cant complain.

Looking forward to the next! Nice report! Thankyou!!!

Looking forward to our first ever race in Chile! Smile

Parra Bustamente need a solid stage 3 here

baseballlover312
Fabbro fresh off his win in Sakartvelo and already back to doing way below his stats. Though I guess it makes sense given how many guys we have in the mix here. He must have just been chosen to do the grunt work early. Just weird that when we have all 3 guys, he usually seems to finish behind Eg as well, even in the hills. I mean, he finished behind a bunch of sprinters today.

Overall, a successful day for us. Seems that we prioritized Warbasse's GC, rightfully so I imagine. JJ was still pretty good and ends up with a 4th place on the stage, so bringing him wasn't a total waste. Warbasse looked pretty solid and has gained a little time on a few of the pure climbers, which could end up being helpful tomorrow. Still, the gaps are ranging from tiny to nonexistent right now, besides Cort's time bonus. It will all come down to daily form tomorrow.

Losing forty seconds is far from ideal, but it was to be expected. Maybe this actually gives Marquez an extra reason to attack early tomorrow, like he did in Trentino and actually saved his GC doing that. At least he has no reason not to try anything, but daily form will probably be decisive. Nice to see my guys in the break, but they're obviously still too weak to really play a role in the KoM. Hopefully they can do better in a couple of seasons, when they're maxed Smile

Thanks for the nice report once again, red, and congratulations to lief!

Nothing from the stage but at; east Keinath is in touch with the other favourites. Hoping the last stage is selective and Keinath can repeat his good form again.

Thanks for the report Smile

Definitely not the best race for us in the end, with Warbasse unable to respond to the decisive move on the final climb there. He had Eg to help him well into the final, but still got caught out of position and (understandably) could not match the acceleration. The short, steep climbs are not his specialty, and he got pushed around a bit there.

Still, not terrible by any means. 8th on GC hurts only because we were tied for 6th on time, but given the startlist and parcours, it was a reasonable outcome for him. We don't go home empty handed, and that's obviously big.

The real loss for us here though is Eg and Fabbro (especially Fabbro) not getting any secondary points. Other teams seems to be able to manage those superdomestiques fine - look at Sauber getting both Frankiny and Ranaweera in the final move today. I'm willing to sacrifice positions to support a sole leader, of course, but at some point these guys should be doing better than they are even by inertia. They're losing to other, worse domestiques. Fabbro shouldn't be 42nd here even if he kills himself for Warbasse - which he definitely didn't today. Unfortunately, scoring in those minor spots is still important, and we constantly lose out despite having a lot of options. At least they make up for it with a few U25 points.

You can't win them all though! After last week, anything was gonna be a bit of a letdown. We'll just pick it up again next race. Really anxious about our potential rankings position right now.

Thanks for the reports redordead, and congrats to Tyrg!

Ulloa really likes attacking, which is nice to see, even if it didn't lead to anything so far.

Marquez did what I hoped he would, attack early-ish. Too bad the selection he forced wasn't selective enough and the first group only won 35 seconds on the others, after he lost 40 yesterday. Eleventh place is obviously not what we hoped for, but it is closer to the fifth place (eight seconds) than it might look on first glance. Not that it matters much Pfft

We've been sliding down the CT rankings since Baugnies did some nice things in May, and we really need to step up our game soon.

Thanks for all the great reports again redordead, and congratulations to those that did well Smile

We won?!? Honestly after Stage 2 I though for sure something was going to go horrendously wrong in the final stage and Cort Nielsen was going to lose a million minutes but no, it actually worked out this time! Thanks for the report redordead.

I'll take 6th overall alllll day long, thank you very much Grin a bit lucky for sure to be the first of a few riders with the same time. But together with Redecker's, that's a good haul of points for us here. Much needed after a bit of a drought recently. Congrats to you, lief, that's a big win!
