Celtic Chrono

Welcome one, welcome all to one of the major events for PCT Time Trialists: The Celtic Chrono. It’s one with great tradition as well, being run as the Isle of Man ITT since 2009, with this being the third edition under its new name.
Despite its long history, only one man has won it twice: Dominique Cornu. He’s here again this time, but having arrived in the latter stages of his career, he can no longer be counted as a favorite. However, as we’ll see in a bit, one or two other former winners have a shot at a repeat.
Not all that much to say here. The riders will complete almost 100 kilometers alone on their bikes, divided into two parts. There is a decently long strech that goes a bit uphill, but last year’s results indicate that hill and/or mountain play a minimal role at best. We’ll still mention it to be on the safe side though as we look at the favorites:
| FL | TT | RS | MO | HI | Fiedler | 78 | 82 | 74 | 59 | 67 | Zmorka | 74 | 82 | 75 | 61 | 66 | Kittel | 75 | 81 | 70 | 55 | 64 | Sergent | 79 | 80 | 74 | 65 | 69 | Viennet | 72 | 80 | 75 | 54 | 67 | Howson | 71 | 80 | 74 | 59 | 65 | Gonzalez Salas | 70 | 80 | 76 | 57 | 60 | Paillot | 70 | 80 | 74 | 70 | 71 | Schädlich | 70 | 80 | 71 | 54 | 64 | Mullen | 75 | 79 | 74 | 62 | 70 | Cataford | 74 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 70 |
Fiedler is one of the two previous winners and he’s possibly the one big favorite thanks to his great flat stat. But he’s challenged by a Repsol - Netflix duo of Zmorka and Kittel, the latter finished 4th last year. At least one, if not both have to end up on the podium, that surely has to be the expectation in the team.
But daily form can be a cruel mistress and there are lots of riders who are only marginally behind. Among them is the second previous winner and the defending champion, Viennet, who now rides for Polar. Sergent with fantastic flat stat might be the more even more dangerous. Gonzalez Salas completes a terrifyingly strong Repsol squad, Howson will be looking at a podium place as well.
Paillot and Cataford will hope that they can use their climbing advantage over the others in the second halfs of the course, the same is true to a slightly lesser extent for Mullen. Lastly, we have Schädlich, who wants to improve on his 7th place from last year.
| FL | TT | RS | MO | HI | Mottin | 69 | 79 | 74 | 58 | 61 | Atkins | 75 | 78 | 75 | 54 | 68 | Nareklishvili | 74 | 78 | 74 | 68 | 69 | Hofer | 73 | 78 | 72 | 58 | 65 | Dempster | 73 | 78 | 72 | 53 | 63 | Balloni | 73 | 78 | 71 | 60 | 66 | Janse van Rensburg | 70 | 78 | 71 | 69 | 68 | Ford | 60 | 78 | 59 | 50 | 52 | Downey | 73 | 77 | 74 | 63 | 67 | Cornu | 71 | 77 | 70 | 63 | 68 | Laizer | 70 | 77 | 71 | 52 | 58 | Sebright | 69 | 77 | 70 | 56 | 60 | Joeaar | 69 | 74 | 68 | 62 | 70 |
There are quite a lot of riders who will be looking to enter the Top 10. Some of them may even hope for a Top 5 if they have two extraordinarily good days. Mottin and Atkins might be the most likely candidates for that.
Other team leaders in this group include the DK Zalgiris duo Nareklishvili and Hofer, Janse van Rensburg for the Minions, last year’s 9th place Ford for Glanbia and Laizer for Project: Africa. Joeaar is obviously not a candidate for one of the better places, but he’s still the best of his team, so I figured I’d mention him at least.
14 teams in total take part in the race, one more than last year. You can see all 42 riders on the startlist:

Don't expect much as Dees and Intxausti have actually performed better in TTs, but as long as we score something it's satisfactory.

I think all the points here should turn into negative in the rankings because anyone who scores in a TT only race is a huge nerd
And because lots of teams near us in the last rankings are here
Spoiler Thanks for doing the preview and report cunego I'm sure it'll be a fun event

I wonder if Nepomnyachsniy could do a bit better here than expected, if mtn or hill indeed do have an impact. Mottin is shit anyway
Thanks for the preview Cunego

AC has a very legit chance to win based on other races this year. He's almost as equally likely to finish 15th. I don't have a clue because our season is all over the place!
Also we have two Barbadians of which one is a female, because i am determined to make the MG fun and ridiculous! Hopefully they can put in some solid performances and get mention in the report.

After horrible showing in Berlin, Monterrey (WTF??!!!) and Middle East, we really need good result for boosting our morale and selfconfidence here.
Thanks for the preview, cunego59.

Well, how's that for Kittel starting to perform?

Ufff too close for my liking at the end
I can take this Zmorka's underperforming having Kittel on this level. Great to see him delivering finally this season. 1-5-6 is a huge result, better than i expected pre-race, as i thought riders as Cataford or Paillot could use their MO strenght in the "climb", but surely didn't matter much if Kittel is winning this race jajaja

Congrats to Repsol! I stand by my post-race comments of a few days ago
Dreadful from Paillot, though partly my fault for not checking the profile closely enough. My guess is the climb is below 5% for the most part (unlike on the original single stage Isle of Man TT profile - I know, I've been around far too long) so it didn't benefit Cataford and Paillot as expected. At least he's proven to be a better signing than Guerreiro so far though... |

Good performance from our boys. Solid from Repsol to claim a foreseen title. Congrats Aqua!
Beautiful and informative report cunego, thanks for that

Maybe should have described that in the report: There was one really steep section when the road first turns upwards after the second time check that goes up to 9%, but that's like 200 meters. Other than that, it never goes over 4% iirc.
