Tour de San Luis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/c2_tsl.jpg

Welcome to the 11th edition of Tour de San Luis. The race has been a part of the MG calendar since 2010. Initially starting out as a 6 day event it has grown out to having 8 stages in the last few years. The race is divided into 4 hilly stages, 2 time-trial stages and 2 flat stages. With that given this is a race that favours the puncheurs, but will also punish those who are not proficient against the clock. On paper there are only 2 stages for the sprinters, but stage 4 could also become the sprint, if the peloton wants it.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

GC contenders

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa67687773676773

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman is the #1 favourite in any hilly race he enters. Apart from his prowess on the hills, he is also the best time-trialist among the puncheurs. Another big contender is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer. A former winner from 2018 he is an excellent puncheur who will try to rival Kelderman on the hills, while not giving much away on the TT bike. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Edmondson are all expected to lose more time against the clock, so they will need to perform well going uphill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Craddock is a better rounded stage racer type rider. He'll look to take advantage of the TTs and limit his losses on the uphill finishes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard are good in the hills, as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Watson who will probably be Kelderman's super domestique, but also has the skills to pull off a good GC result himself. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Novak is in the stage racer bracket as Craddock. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Costa is a 2-time winner of this race. He won it last year and back in 2016. He has the perfect skill set for this race, but he's 34 now. Can he do it again?

The race kicks off with a 4.3 km prologue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough is the top contender to take the leader's jersey here, but he will face tough competition from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Jiang and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Hamza. Plenty of other contenders for the opening stage though. So as usual with short time-trials the differences will be minimal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger7372687777
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist7472737676

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Wippert headlines what is a good list of sprinters here, but there isn't a huge depth of quality. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully will also look to be one of the favourites for a stage win. Him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough should also be in contention to grab the leader's jersey given they are expected to do well in the prologue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Page and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Van der Sanden are two strongmen who can't be underestimate. As well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen who brings the most speed to the table and has won a stage here last year. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Sanikwathi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Berger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Kvist are outsiders, but make the list due to not that many sprinters travelling to Argentina.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Anuar Aziz696578736866

A lot of names from the GC favourites are of course here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Kelderman will surely be looking to win at least one stage here. The others who might lack the skills to challenge for GC include pure puncheur pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ginanni. A pair of mountain loving riders in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner. And the always volatile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Anuar Aziz.

Yearly reminder that Anthony Roux was a god damn beasty bastard in 2017 and came from 27th to 1st in the GC here in two stages with two solo victories.

Hope you all have fun here and thanks to redordead for the preview and reports whatever, but my bragging about a four-year-old event is much more important Pfft

JJ might have gotten me a bit too optimistic about our chances here after how strong he was in Clasico San Cristobal. Without a TTT to get in the way, he will hopefully avoid South Africa syndrome. Obviously his ITT isn't ideal either, but given the competition, I don't think that should put him too far behind. Most puncheurs aren't any better, and I think it's very unlikely a pure TT guy upsets the puncheurs for GC.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I really do want a podium here, but ultimately I care more about points scoring at this point that prestige results. We need to find ways to not cede rankigns points to our promotion competitors. Just get it done JJ!

We have Quaade for the TT, so hopefully he can do a bit better than he's done so far this year against the clock, but I don't anticipate a leadership conflict since the hills should be way more selective than in Denmark. A stage 4 placing would do just fine.

When I planned out this year, I tried to give Bertilsson to AKA as a leadout as much as possible. Had I known as I do now that that is a useless strategy and just wasted Bertilsson's race days, I definitely would have sent him here instead. Part of having a versatile team is trying not to waste any race days, and we're likely to lose 2 here. But hey, maybe we'll get in a break.

Tipping Carrefour as a favorite is nothing new, but I really think Novak could be the dark horse favorite here. I considered sending Warbasse here, but decided it would be more efficient to use JJ and have Larry go elsewhere. With how iffy the mtn/hill distinction and hill selectivity can be in PCM 18, Novak has a significant chance to stay with these groups, and even if he loses some time, his TT may make up for it against almost every puncheur. Interested to see how he does paired with Quevedo.

Thanks for the preview!

Didn't really think that almost the entire CT field would be present in such a long C2 stage race, but I guess everyone else thought the same Pfft

Finally, we don't have a favorite for a flat/hilly stage race, as Pernsteiner definitely isn't among the strongest puncheurs. Therefore, our expectations are rather low GC-wise; a Top 15 would be fine, Top 10 would be good. On the other hand, we really want to get into those breakaways, as there could be quite some good stage results at stake. There aren't too many versatile domestiques to chase down the escapees, so we really need to find our place up front.

Of course, there's Scully as well - and as redordead wrote in the preview, it's our hope to get him into yellow after stage 2. Keough should be the favorite for this, though. But a good position in the race for green is definitely something we're aiming at.

Good luck to everyone, and thanks for the in-depth preview!

No hopes at all for the GC, if we would have anyone in the top-25 it would be considered a huge success. Guillén can try to win a sprint again, while Sterbini can hopefully get some revanche for a weaker TT in Denmark earlier. Then it'll just be guys in the breaks for the KoM maybe, but tbh I have no clue what Pollos rider would be able to do something decent in the break, as the team is made out of youngsters and Bru's Smile

Thanks for the great preview, and good luck to everyone.

Pleased with the limited sprint field, between the prolouge and the sprint stages feel like going home with a stage win and a solid position for green isn't an unreasonable expectation. Although fear at least one of the sprint stages will go to a break.

This is a must-win really. Best puncher and best TT rider among the top punchers. If Kelderman still cannot win, it's going to be very disappointing. Hopefully Dumoulin can improve from his ride in Denmark in the TT. VDS has a decent field to try and score well in the sprints. We have high hopes for this race, can only go downwards from here Pfft

Thanks for the preview red Smile

Well, with Ssbagwanya, and Seibeb we hope to have an aggressive race in the hills. Reguigui could be an outside bet for a decent GC, but it is a tall ask.

Hopefully Hamza can pull off a strong ride in the prologue which is probably our best shot at a stage win.

Ah, too bad that Scully got the worst position of the 4" group... 7th would have been a great result for the green jersey, but well Short straw in the prologue lottery, that happens... I hope he'll show some even better prologues in races where it really counts. Anyway, getting yellow is absolutely possible tomorrow, but some other sprinters are within reach of the GC lead, too. Will be a close fight!

Congrats to P:A on a great opening stage and the early race lead, and thanks to red for the report!

Really like this style of TT report, red. Makes it very easy to follow.

Half of my TTers had a shocker of a prologue, but the other half punched above their weight. Having numerous entries for the lottery pays off! Grin Happy old man Gretsch could clinch this considering he was a very last-minute signing.

Prolouges are a lottery so was prepared for disappointment but have to say Keough's 17th was pretty much worst case for a guy who was solo #1 favorite on paper.

As long as he saves the good ride for the Pro Cycling Challenge on home turf I will forgive him.

Not a terrible ride by Quaade given that his PRL is only 76. JJ loses a few seconds, but hopefully the race will be selective enough for that not to matter much.

Pretty quiet from us, which is to be expected, just hope that Durasek can work wonders on the TT and pull in a decent GC result so we don't 0 point.
