Clasico San Cristobal
Welcome to Cuba, welcome for the eighth edition of the Clasico San Cristobal! Last year’s winner Chaves couldn’t make it back, but that doesn’t mean his team Azteca isn't back to see some old friends from the CT. The only former winner at the start is Zaini, but the Italian is not the rider he used to be. 181 Latin American kilometres that see quite some elevation, let’s see who will be aiming for the victory mañana!
| MTN | HILL | STA | RES | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 80 | 75 | Zaini | 66 | 80 | 74 | 65 | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 76 | 77 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | Quevedo | 71 | 78 | 72 | 72 | Juul-Jensen | 70 | 78 | 76 | 74 | Eiking | 69 | 78 | 78 | 74 | Flügel | 69 | 78 | 74 | 62 | Barbin | 68 | 78 | 75 | 73 | Mehr-Wenige | 66 | 78 | 74 | 69 | Watson | 65 | 78 | 76 | 72 | Hoelgaard | 74 | 77 | 72 | 72 | Zordan | 73 | 77 | 72 | 72 | Smirnovs | 68 | 77 | 74 | 69 | Caruso | 68 | 77 | 75 | 70 | Ben Nasser | 67 | 77 | 73 | 67 | Felline | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | Pellaud | 65 | 77 | 74 | 68 | Roux | 64 | 77 | 77 | 70 | Besada | 63 | 77 | 74 | 74 |
It’s no surprise that Kelderman will be there as well, immediately being bombarded to the top favourite once again. He has already won some nice races this season, but we’ve also seen he is definitely not unbeatable. Watson and Bardet have the duty of piloting him to the win.
Zaini might have won the race two years ago, but his lack of mountain and physical capacities should mean he won’t do it again, even though on a good day he might just find his rhythm once again. A very different rider and without a doubt the top contender to steal the win from Kelderman is Moscon. What reporter Marco is to Kelderman, I might become for the Italian, who won his (and his team’s) first classic this year in San Marino, where he beat the Philips rider in a thrilling uphill finale. Now look at that race profile again. Two for two? It’ll all depend on the amount of Swiss Franc on my bank account tomorrow morning.
Edmondson, Quevedo and Juul-Jensen. A nice trio of some likeable riders. Edmondson might not be the top favourite, tomorrow, but is definitely top-5 potential, and if you can get a top-5, you can always win on a very good day as well. Quevedo already knows what winning tastes like, and was the other rider (after winner Moscon) who beat favourite Kelderman in an uphill finish in San Marino earlier. He’ll be looking for more of that, while Juul-Jensen is here to continue his team’s promotion (and title?) hunt as well. Will the Danish dynamite be able to explode at the finish line tomorrow?
Now then, interesting to see Barbin being sandwiched by the Gjensidige riders, who have three leaders in Eiking, draft rider Flügel and Mehr-Wenige. The former of those three has already shown us this season that he’s not afraid of attacking, which has delivered a very nice result here and there. The Norwegian has some great stamina, while Barbin is one of the better sprinters on the list. As the finish is uphill though, it remains to be seen whether that sprinting capacity will be that important.
Then we see various decent puncheurs, but most of them should lack the ability to stand their ground on this parcours, which sees quiet a lot of elevation. Hoelgaard and Zordan should have less problems with this though, and will be aiming for a top-10 spot. Speaking about that constant up and down, let’s have a look at some guys who might be considered weaker puncheurs, but are good climbers.
| MTN | HILL | STA | RES | Frankiny | 78 | 76 | 72 | 75 | Eyob | 76 | 76 | 74 | 69 | Schultz | 76 | 76 | 74 | 80 | Seibeb | 75 | 76 | 70 | 69 | Khederi | 74 | 76 | 68 | 67 | Venter | 73 | 76 | 71 | 73 | Ndayisenga | 78 | 75 | 69 | 68 | Fabbro | 78 | 75 | 71 | 72 | Krizek | 74 | 75 | 72 | 71 | Rabottini | 73 | 75 | 72 | 71 | Bardet | 77 | 74 | 72 | 70 | Ranaweera | 80 | 73 | 75 | 75 | Giogieri | 78 | 73 | 71 | 74 |
While it’s unsure whether Eyob and Schultz will be here on domestique duties or have a free role, we do think it’s safe to say Swiss champion Frankiny will be his team’s leader (and hopefully he will get recognized by his manager this time), even though Sauber brought a surprising name to the race: Ranaweera. It seems like they really believe the parcours will be hard enough for the climbing capacities to really make a difference, or do they just want a luxe domestique for Frankiny? It’ll be very interesting to see their tactic tomorrow.
Ndayisenga and Fabbro are two similar riders, who come a little bit short when looking at their punching, but might also make up for it with their superior climbing capacities. Just below them we find Zalgiris’ hope for points, Krizek. Definitely some other names on this list that might surprise tomorrow, but for now let’s take a look at the entire startlist and hope for a nice race! Good luck!

When Clasico San Cristobal isn't at the start of the season:

I can see that this will be another disaster race for my team if Barbin doesn't improve his performance on hill stages/races.
Since Barbin didn't do almost anything in hill stages this season I'm only hoping that Pibernik can help Venter to get in the top 20.
thanks for preview Nemolito.

Ah yes, a hilly race, great technically, we have lots of options with Khederi, Ben Nasser, Schoonbroodt and Ndayisenga, but I'd be surprised if any one of them came close to the Top 20. But sometimes, it's great to follow races where you can't be disappointed. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the preview!

Bru is disappointed to miss his home race, but has given me the keys to his villa, which is very nice as you also know the MGUCI generally lets us reporters sleep in those dodgy establishments

This is Krizalids race to lose, as this one tends to be quite stupid (not as stupid as Placci but still)

Lot of pressure on Kelderman to keep us in the title hunt. We've had a solid month but it's not enough and I think a win here is what is needed to keep pushing for the top spot. Lets see if he can deliver. Let's see if the support can get some bonus points as well.
Thanks for the preview

Definitely not the best support cast for Moscon here, but Pernsteiner just didn't have enough RDs to join him here. Lienhard, Thièry, Basso and Brüngger have done a good job so far, though, and if we continue the same strategy as in the last few races, they'll probably to a lot of work.
The uphill finish should be perfect for Moscon, as it's long enough for sprint and acceleration being not the most important capabilities - instead, resistance should be a big factor. And with all the climbing earlier in the race, even the mountain stat shouldn't be unimportant. A Top 3 is definitely the goal here, and I sure wouldn't say no to another win. However, a C2 race isn't important enough to make Nemo a rich man

We have a team goal here, let's hope for the best.
GL everybody!

After coming back from South Africa, JJ has a chance for redemption here. He'll get a little more help than usual as Fabbro and Eg had enough extra race days to join in the fun. Not sure if that will help or hurt him, but the course seemed mountainous enough to warrant it. I see Sauber had similar ideas to even send Ranaweera. Shoud be an easy Kelderman win in any case.
Thanks for the preview!

Well, hopefully the mountainous terrain favours Seibeb and he's coming off excellent form. A top 10 would be outstanding!

A point! Good job, Khederi I enjoyed that report a lot, thanks Nemolito. Perfectly played by Hoelgaard, Kelderman was strong but he was smarter.
I also have a soft spot for Juul-Jensen since reporting on so many of his, let's say, less convincing performances last season, so I'm happy to see him do well here. Not a great day for Centovalli, though. 7th is tough.

Great job by Juul-Jensen to redeem himself here after bonking in South Africa! Attacked early, which I like to see, but knew when it wasn't going to stick and settled back in for the final uphill. He seemed to have really great legs today. Unfortunately he followed a weaker than usual Moscon's wheel at an inopportune time, but that's bike racing, and I don't blame JJ for wanting that wheel. His late charge was still awesome, and I'm very satisfied to come away with a podium.
Definitely the best we've done in the hills depth wise this year too. Fabbro coming was worthwhile for a few points in 13th, and Eg managed to get a point for 23rd. Even Sulvaran and Olesen managed to finish in the top 30, though outside of C2 scoring places.
Congrats to Tyrg on a great win for Hoelgaard! Thanks for the awesome report Nemo! Was really fun to see the different groups form and merge throughout the day. I'm excited for San Luis now.

Great race by the team, destroying the pack. However, Moscon must have had a really bad day, not being able to follow folks he easily beats usually. Well, that happens.
His 7th place is of course a huge letdown, but a tremendously strong Thièry in 9th still makes it a somewhat acceptable result. Scoring 20 points was the minimum goal, so we can live with 27. It's a pity that Lienhard was finally caught by the pack, that would have been a really good depth result else.
Thanks for the report, Nemo, and congrats to lief - Tryg are really rocking and rolling lately!

4th place is definitely a good result for Edmondson. To make the day even better I am absolutely STOKED with Schultz and his hard work and 11th place as a result! Great to see him progressing within the CT peloton! Another rider up there as well meant 3 riders with great results! Great day for the team!
Congrats to the winner and great report!!
