The 5 Jours de Dunkerque which has been on the MG calendar since 2008, has now been run as a one day race in the last two seasons. 1 Jour de Dunkerque is 178 km long. The first quarter of the race is flat before it goes into a hilly circuit where the riders will tackle a cobbled hill 9 times, followed by a road paved hill. The races finishes uphill the cobbled climb making it 10 ascents up the cobbles in total. As such the riders will require cobble climbing skills as well as climbing skills in general. Positioning before each ascent will also be key as there is not much flat roads on the circuit, meaning not making a selection over the hill could end a rider's chances of winning.
Â
Let's look at some of the favourites:
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | COB | ACC | Tsatevich | 62 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 75 | 75 |
Tsatevich is coming off a victory in a similar race at the Lincoln GP so it makes sense that he is the out and out favourite in the north of France. Carrefour also showed in the last race that they are well set up to support their leader.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | COB | ACC | Sinkeldam | 65 | 75 | 74 | 70 | 77 | 68 | Baugnies | 56 | 71 | 79 | 72 | 79 | 72 | Schoonbroodt | 63 | 75 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 72 | Naesen | 57 | 72 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Menten | 64 | 73 | 73 | 75 | 75 | 68 | Salzmann | 62 | 71 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 71 |
We have quite a few riders that will look to challenge the Russian. First on the list is Sinkeldam. He is one of the best climbers here, but may lack some acceleration if it comes down to an uphill sprint. Baugnies is the best cobbler and has a good punch. If he has his climbing legs, then he should do well. Next we have the duo from Bralirwa, Schoonbroodt and Naesen. Naesen is the better cobbler and finisher, but Schoonbroodt is much the better climber. How the duo play off eachother will be important to their success in this race. Farfetch also bring a well rounded duo in Menten and Salzmann. Both strong allrounders, how will they play their cards?
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | COB | ACC | Van Avermaet | 50 | 72 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 72 | Van Lerberghe | 60 | 66 | 75 | 74 | 77 | 73 | De Vreese | 66 | 72 | 72 | 70 | 74 | 70 | Nolf | 62 | 65 | 76 | 71 | 79 | 70 | Paprstka | 62 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 72 |
Tier III looks slightly overmatched, but still offers some real quality and pedigree. Van Avermaet will want to improve on his Lincoln performance, but needs to climb better to do that. Van Lerberghe was suppose to be Philips's leader, but can he check his ego at the door, if Paprstka again proves to be better suited to the hillier profile? De Vreese should prove an excellent domestique for Sinkeldam, but has the climbing capacity to produce a result himself. Lastly we have Nolf. He made no qualms regarding having Tsatevich lead last time, but Carrefour will still be hoping for an improved performace from the Belgian.
Full startlist:

Wait, we have one of the strongest line-ups here? Very glad I just took three cobbled races for our compulsory C2 racedays seeing this
Menten and Salzmann should both be able to contend for the top 5, and depending on how the race plays out Van den Berg may also be able to pick up a decent placing - the climbs all being mainly cobbled will hopefully lessen the impact on him. |

Here we are. Our 3rd goal of the season, and the only one for Sinkeldam. We need a top 5, and on paper we couldn't have asked for a better situation. Sinkeldam is second only to Tsatevich on paper, and the startlist is remarkably small with only 10 teams. If we can finish in the upper half of leaders, we should complete our goal.
Of course, it depends on a lot of things, many of which are the same as Lincoln last week. We need a tough race, so that a sprint or pure acceleration do not decide things against us. We need climbing to be a decisive factor, both in hill and probably mountain as well. Given the profile, that should be true, even more so than last week.
One thing about the tiny startlist that scares me though is the idea of a breakaway win. We only brought 6 riders here thanks to our small team size, and we have a favorite. So we are almost certainly not going to be in the breakaway, but we don't really have the manpower to chase it either. if Carrefour and Bralirwa aren't up to the task, I fear a breakaway win is a real possibility here, especially given how frequently they happen in PCM 18.
This would be a really disappointing failure given how well my planning lined up with goals and such here. Hopefully the breakaway doesn't survive, and Sinkeldam will do his job, with a strong De vreese by his side.
Thanks for the preview!

Certainly didn't expect just ten teams here and I share your concerns about the AI behaviour specifically when it comes to the breakaway. But we have decent depth with Rutsch, Chokri and obviously Okbamariam in addition to Schoonbroodt and Naesen, so I hope that we either get someone in the break ourselves (we've been somewhat consistent at that) or else do have the strength to get everyone back in time.
Naesen was second at the Lincoln GP, repeating that would be awesome, but even a Top 5 would be fine, or ideally two in the Top 10. Though I'm also worried about mountain stat playing a bigger role here, but at least we have two options and Schoonbroodt has stepped up before. Should definetely be interesting, can't wait for the report (I'll even finally update my HQ afterwards ).

Baugnies not the best puncheur on the list indeed, let's hope he makes up for that with his big engine and skills on the cobbles. Definitely afraid of that non-cobbled hill. Thanks for the preview!

It's a shame this race clashed with Cheshire otherwise I'd have loved to come here with the cobbles squad (bar Zepuntke). In hindsight I probably should have
Good luck to the few teams who are here!

I made the total mistake of putting the race into the calendar of my team as we don't have any good hill cobbled cyclist.

The result that I was expecting from m team and I'm really happy that Pibernik and Korošec went into breakaway otherwise they would be behind the peloton even quicker than they were now.
Congrats Nemolito for a win.

What a beautiful race! A win would have been nice, but I'm also really happy for Nemolito that Baugnies finally delivered one for LPH. 2nd, 7th, 8th, 12th and 18th is massive, super happy that even guys like El Sabbahi and Chokri got some points here. Thanks for the report once again, redordead.

Well that was a pleasant surprise! With the strong cobbled puncheurs present I really feared falling outside the top-5 was a possibility for Baugnies. Even more so when I saw that "big" breakaway get away. Some great teamwork all day long didn't result into the most amazing depth points (such as Bralirwa who did a terrific job), but they did succeed in controlling that breakaway. Baugnies then did exactly what I dreamt of last night: completing the win goal for Los Pollos Hermanos! Apart from good race tactics he simply seemed to be the strongest man in the race, which is always great to see of course. First one day classic win in the history of the team, hopefully many more to come
Some very happy chickens now all in Latin America and Belgium, and even though the depth wasn't great, still lovely to see level 1 rider Ruiz score his first points for the team.
Thank you for another great report redordead!

Honestly, given the startlist and profile, 5th and 13th are pretty bad results for us points wise. Sinkeldam was definitely too aggressive, but he probably should have been stronger than he was anyway and not blown up completely at the end. De Vreese did a ton of work and I think in the end we probably exerted too much too early. Might have had better luck in a bigger field with more teams to control the race and use general attrition over the earlier portions. Finishing behind Van Lerberghe proves that the Sinkeldam's hills prowess didn't mean that much (or at least enough for us) in the end, given their equal cobble.
Nevertheless, I can't be too disappointed. C2 points are one thing, but more importantly, we managed to secure a top 5, which means we are now 3/3 in goals this year! It's the first time we've ever succeeded at 3 in one year, and we still have 2 to go, including a standings goal (I'm not as hopeful for AKA's goal later on). That in itself is big cause for celebration to me. If we manage to promote, I might finally get to taste what a decent budget is like when building my team going forward. And I'm really looking forward to that possibility.
Congrats to Nemolito for a great win, and thanks to redordead for a very exciting report!

3rd is a great result for Van Lerberghe in this race, which doesn't particularly suit him, and that too after having been dropped before! Love that we continue to score depth points with our three-pronged approach. Paprstka and Bovenhuis once again very able sidekicks to our leader.
Congrats to Nemolito!! Wonder if my post in your HQ earlier is equivalent to calling this result?
Thanks for the great report redordead
