Tour of Uppsala

Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/c1_upp.jpg

Welcome to Sweden for the second edition of the Tour of Uppsala! A great opportunity for CT and PCT time trialists to win a stage race here, as the Tour of Uppsala consists out of one prologue, one 25 km time trial and three flat stages. It’s very interesting to see almost no KoM-points available as well, as there are only two mountains of fourth category in the three flat stages combined. Last year’s winner Coppel will not be defending his title and neither will any of the other stage winners (Holloway, Vanderbiest and Ludvigsson). Let’s have a look at the favourites for the 2020 edition, and see who’s ready to become a record holder of this Swedish stage race together with Coppel.

Time trialists

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Hamza7674737079

The men in the list above will be the main contenders for the GC, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Hamza, who is not the best time trialist but is a very decent prologue rider and could surprise the favourites in the first stage. It seems the three biggest favourites are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Zmorka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Fiedler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kittel. Fiedler will have to try and beat those two Repsol – Netflix leaders, a team who has a third favourite on the list as well, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Gonzalez Salas. Not delivering the GC winner would without a doubt be a disappointment for the Spanish team.

Nevertheless, there are around ten riders who probably believe they have a shot at beating them on a good day, and that’s not even counting several others who barely missed the list. The best time trialists outside of the names mentioned above should be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Hofer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Dempster, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Ford, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Atkins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Balloni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Golovash. There is one rider who is actually one of the most important names to follow during the prologue who hasn't been mentioned, and that is because he is categorized as a sprinter in the list below.

The sprinters
NameFLARESRECSPRACCPRO
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan757180838173
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao746481837657
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino706575827769
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen747577818076
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish716875817874
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Ciolek736673817659
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson726479818172
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi787781808081
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami756778808263
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini726971808259
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans727079808259

These should be the fastest men in Sweden. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan will be the big favourite in every sprint, and has an impressive lead-out with names like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Aberasturi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe. His main rivals should be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi, who are clearly a stronger rider than him when it comes to their physical abilities. Those two should also be among the strongest sprinters in the prologue, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi actually one of the big favourites to win the prologue. There are two other sprinters, coming from the CT, that have a strong prologue in their legs and could also deliver some decent results in the sprints: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Te Brake.

There are several riders on the favourite’s list that are able to equal the maximum speed of big favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan, or at least come close to that speed. The big problem for them is that the sprints cannot be too long, as they have trouble maintaining their pace over a longer distance. Those riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Ciolek.

The three other riders on the list might be considered a bit slower than the Australian, but can actually maintain their high pace for a longer distance. Let’s see if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans can bring a smile on the face of their managers.

There are many fast men who’re not on the list and will probably be used as a lead-out by their team, such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde. However, some others who should be about as fast as those four can actually ride for themselves: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett.

The only thing left for me today is to share the startlist with you, the only thing left for the riders is to win a stage and/or the GC of the Tour of Uppsala for their team. The first stage will be uploaded on January 1st.

We're just here for some stage hunting, having no serious time trialist in our lineup (nor in our entire roster, tbh). Scully worked well in sprints and prologue in Jelajah, so in a perfect race he'd deliver a good first stage and get some time bonuses in the other stages. But it could as well be our first zero-pointer of the year, given how odd the sprints have been so far.

Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the reports starting in 2021 Smile

We need some points desperately, hopefully Boeckmans and Mottin are up to the task.

Thanks for the preview Nemo Smile

thats a helluva strong startlist for C1 trashy race. I expect at least 3 riders in top 30 and some bangers from Guerao. At least 100 points expected

There's a good lot of people with legitimate aspirations at victory here. This fits well with our TT focus so it could be a good opportunity for some useful points. Now, I'd imagine Ciolek isn't going to add much value to our chances here so kind of wish I'd left him out. Let's see how it goes.

Thanks for the preview Nemo!

Expecting at least a top 3 here, come on Fiedler!

26th by Scully is a bit below my expectations, but probably about where he should be stat-wise. 12" is too much, though - he'll need a win to overcome this deficit.

However, winning against Kemboi won't be easy. That guy's just a beast this year, incredible! Congrats to Farfetch once again - let's see if the yellow jersey curse still doesn't hold for Kemboi in 2021 Wink

Thanks for the report, Nemo, hoping to get some more pics of my team on the sprint stages Smile

Good collective performance but leaving with only one top10 and a 2 in the top20 is not ideal. Let's see what's in store for the next TT stage.

Congrats jph, great to see Kemboi winning! Thanks for the report, Nemo!

Happy new year everyone!

Delighted with a 3rd place from Schädlich, hopeful for a top 10 GC from him.

Hope Cav continues his good form in the sprints.

Congrats to jph and thanks to Nemo for the report.

AC was pretty awful on Stage 1 to not even get a Top20. Stage 2 was better, not sure how Aberasturi got 10th but i'll take it. Doesn't help us get good points however.

Still far too close a finish after that sort of leadout, you can see the surprise in Ewan's face on the podium
Battling hard to get some momentum together, Aberasturi is pushing hard to get this team moving forwards!

Not a bad race for us so far, Nych already secured 2nd in KOM, Bernal has a good chance for U25 podium. Viennet should finish in top10 overall and even Mullen still can surprise.

Thanks Nemolito for all reports!

Congrats to TMM and thanks for another great report Nemo.

Cav surfed the wheels for a much better 5th place, no sign of a leadout or much chasing or getting in breaks, some of Kraftwerk's riders only here for a chance to look round the Linnaeus museum?

Incredibly Schädlich was 11th on a sprint stage, hope this means he will be in top form for the ITT!

Ewan! Nice one! Congrats TMM. Deserved!

Anonymous one for us, but tomorrow there's a TT. Hoping for a good showing there.

Thanks again, Nemo!

It feels really strange to see your sprinter not competing at all, but I guess that had to happen one day. Note for the manager: Don't send Scully to C1 races.
Instead, we finally get some breakaway action. The tactics on stage 2 were really strange, but I don't really mind as we seem to have secured the KoM jersey with mountain goat Mundle. I guess this race shouldn't actually have any KoM sprints at all, but I'll still take the points, of course...

Now let's see if Bissegger can actually keep a Top 8 place in the U25 standings, as that would probably be our only chance of getting any points in addition to the KoM ones.

Congrats to Atlantius and TMM for the stage wins, and thanks for the reports to Nemo!

Was beginning to think we aren't even participating in this race.

Can't really argue with Ewan winning. Boeckmans has been pretty good this season when he's been positioned well. The race is not gonna be a zero pointer at least, but I hope Boeckmans has one more good result in him here.

Prologue was certainly disappointing, but at least Zmorka got a dominant win in the long TT, and Salas delivered a great 4th place. Kittel at 9th is very meh, but can be compensated by Salas, so overall a decent race. Could have been better in terms of points, but we'll take this happily

Even Valter is 3rd in the U25 wow!
