The 4th edition of the Colombo Classic. The characteristics of this race favour the classic puncheurs. It's nearly 186 km long with 8 traversals of a circuit that is mostly flatish, with the exception of a short hill within it. After completing the circuit the riders face a slightly longer and steeper climb, before descending all the way to the finish line. The ability to punch up the hills will of course be crucial, but the flat kilometres on the circuit could tire the riders. As well as the descents could prove to be an avenue to rest their legs or launch an attack.
This is a race that featured some of the best puncheurs in it's 3 prior years as a PTHC categorised race. This year it's been moved to the C2 category and will therefore host the best the CT division has to offer. But don't be fooled, the startlist is full of talented riders.
Let's look at some of the favourites:
| HIL | RES | FLA | STA | DHI | Kelderman | 82 | 75 | 70 | 80 | 71 | Moscon | 79 | 77 | 71 | 76 | 69 | Edmondson | 79 | 72 | 70 | 75 | 72 | Juul-Jensen | 78 | 74 | 73 | 76 | 69 | Eiking | 78 | 74 | 71 | 78 | 69 | Meyer | 79 | 71 | 74 | 74 | 62 | Quevedo | 78 | 72 | 69 | 72 | 72 | Felline | 77 | 73 | 68 | 75 | 71 | Hoelgaard | 77 | 72 | 72 | 72 | 69 | Dieteren | 77 | 70 | 67 | 75 | 73 | Mudarra | 77 | 70 | 71 | 74 | 64 | Palini | 78 | 68 | 69 | 75 | 61 | Anuar Aziz | 78 | 68 | 69 | 73 | 62 | Ben Nasser | 77 | 67 | 67 | 73 | 66 |
As with any hilly race this season we cannot look past Kelderman as the #1 favourite. No one can match his hill stat, he is well suited to even longer races with his great stamina and there are no chinks in his armour whatsoever.
Next we have another very well rounded rider in Moscon. It's difficult to imagine anyone beating Kelderman, but if it was to happen, Moscon should be one of the riders in position to do so. The same can be said of Edmondson, who can also descend pretty well.
Juul-Jensen is another rider that brings a great set of skills to the table that should serve him well, same for Eiking. Meyer is better than most on the flat and terrific going uphill, but is not the best descender, so he will have to work around that somehow.
Quevedo, Felline and Dieteren are all very strong riders, but they all lack a little when the pace picks up on the flats. Dieteren on the other hand is one of the better descenders. Hoelgaard is good a allrounder, while Mudarra struggles a bit going downhill.
Lastly we have Palini, Anuar Aziz and Ben Nasser. All strong puncheurs in their own right, but all more one dimensional riders. They all lack the resistance, ability on the flat and downhill skills compared to most of the other favourites. They will need to ride a smart race to achieve a top result.

This race sure is Kelderman's to lose! That's one massive gap in quality between the best and the rest.

Thanks for the preview. Let's all hope for a race without any attacks and a nice reduced bunch sprint, won by Felline or Kreder. Cheers! On a more serious note, this is likely the first time we can properly test our 3 hill rider strategy and hopefully they can all score.

Off course with Kelderman I expect a win but I'm not as confident as Yekaterinburg because of the downhill finish. Will need him to use his skills on the ascent to make sure of the expected result. Hope Watson can keep going as well like Yekaterinburg.

Hoping for a result here of course, but on CT hills this year the field is so wide that's it's all down to luck after Kelderman. Just gotta stay alert at the front and see what happens.

Hopefully we can get something great out of this, we are sending a strong group and we are looking to get some points here!

It's redemption time after the underwhelming results in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, downhill + flat finish isn't really Moscon's preferred terrain, so he'd have to get clear on that last hill for a podium or even more.
If we once again get a bunch sprint on a hilly race, maybe Lienhard or Thièry could be in the mix - but I'd prefer to see them attacking early anyway.
Thanks for the preview!

Unfortunately Anuar Aziz only looks like a top 10 contender this year, but it's still worth it for us to finally get hold of him.

Happy to see Quevedo mentioned relatively highly in this preview. Hoping for some fireworks out of him despite his flat due to his great Mountain+Hill.

Well, that one definitely mustn't go to the breakaway. Once again, the AI was extremely lame in a hilly race ending in a downhill - in most of these the breakaway wins. I'd definitely be happier with more HTFs, as long as the AI messes up with the catch so often... On the other hand, it's great for those who are allowed to join the breakaway - congrats to Carlsberg!
We did a good job in limiting the damage, though, taking 9th to 11th, plus two more in the Top25. But it should have been 4th to 6th instead...
Thanks for the report, nice read (until the last hill )!

Johannes Schinnagel!!!!!
wow I'm absolutely over the moon with his ride here.
Obviously it sucks for the favorites (and all unbiased spectators) that it played out like this, but what a way to make that loan worth it for Strava in spring already!
I'm perpetually worried that my CT loans end up serving mostly myself to temporarily offload some of my development expenses, but at least in this case the benefit is already mutual.
Congrats also to our friends at Carlsberg who can surely breathe another sigh of relief and look forward to the next ranking update.

Well, wow. Okay!
Very strange to see the breakaway win here. The peloton surely had the manpower and should have had the motivation, but just didn't do anything when it mattered. Disappointing as a racing fan, but of course I can't complain about the result. We can use a little good luck once in a while!
Gregaard seemed to use his mountain to drill away at the climbs here. He's a pretty terrible puncheur, so it was surprising to see him with so much strength. His backups must have helped. Then the downhill sprint really helped him by not letting anyone have enough speed to come around. If that's flat, I think he fades and probably finishes 6th, so very lucky for us. Hopefully this is the first of a lot of good results for him.
JJ in the pack, which is fine since we were in the break. Gotta feel bad for other teams with top puncheurs who just get nothing when they deserved more.
Thanks for a great report redordead!

Wasn't participating here but obviously interested to see how my fellow CT managers were doing A very nice and clear report with a surprising finale, congratz bbl! I can imagine Abhishek waking up grumpy in a couple of hours Luckily this was only C2 and he didn't lose too many points here

Well that was certainly unexpected Our continued aggressiveness pays off in a big way. 5th is more than I could ever have hoped for, and for a young Rwandan talent in Moise Mugisha to achieve this is just fantastic. Cool to see Lopez active once again as well, eventhough he didn't make it with the others until the end.
For Ben Nasser, this is 100% what I expected to see, and what I expect to see in many races this year - simply being in a poor position and falling behind early because of it. Which is why every single point in hilly races is much appreciated, and especially in this way. Fantastic race for us, congrats to bbl, very happy to see your season going so well, and thank you for the nice report red!
