Guess I'll start off with some news and break tradition.
The TDU is cancelled. Organizers couldn't even convince 5 WT teams to travel there during the pandemic, which I think makes sense. Hopefully it's mostly about the travel and this isn't a bad sign for the European calendar.

I mean, he's 33 and definitely passed his best by a number of years. Not normal to see arthritis as a cause though, but it will definitely stop you!

In a latest survey, made by the Cyclists' Alliance, 25% of the serveyed women riders say that they haven't received no salary at all - a rise by 8% compared to 2019. And IMO this isn't an issue limited to women's cycling.

I can try to understand the decision made by the UCI, but I can't help but feel that this was very much a case of the consequence of his action instead of his actual action. |

Imo not the most ideal decision.
Problem is that those kind of sprints happen very often, far too often at least. But whenever it`s a regular crash without heavy injuries or no crash at all, the riders can even continue the race, only backplaced to last place of the group.
So imo this is now a big precedent case which will be hard for judges in the future. Obviously they would need to punish riders that leave their line a lot more now. But this will also lead to lots of 50/50 cases.
That said, having those sprints reduced by harder punishments seems good, but it mustn`t be a decision due to consequences and not actions, which I guess, it will still remain in future, which makes this decision awful.
Regarding Groenewegen, I think, he knows that his action wasn`t good and he is likely making himself the worst already anyway. But still think, he should be allowed to start the 2021 season just like all others. |

If Jacobsen would've died (which wasn't that far off apparently), we would have said it was too little. I think the punishment is fair, he'll be back in time for Le Tour.

As usual there's all sorts going on here.
Firstly - 9 month backdate suspension, this is technically a ban but one that obviously has minimal impact on Dylan. The team already voluntarily withdrew him from races since Poland and now we are into the off-season anyway. He'll miss some of the early races, but he and Jumbo will openly admit his focus is Le Tour. So the actual punishment is relatively minor in it's impact
Secondly - We are seeing the UCI coming down more and more on these changes of lines, even in small group finishes. It's no secret that Sprints cause more crashes than almost anything else in cycling, and that those crashes in turn lead to more injuries. As the riders continue to push for increase safety measures and protections this is to be expected.
The UCI can use this obviously bad example to send a message, "we don't care if you're the best, we will punish you", but as above without doing major harm to either team or rider.
Thirdly - What can we expect to happen going forwards? In real terms, probably not very much. We're already seeing more relegations and this will continue. Will we see another 6+ month ban, highly unlikely. Will we see another crash like this? Highly unlikely. But not because of the threat of punishment, but just that this was a real bad luck incident.
Will we see riders making less dangerous moves in sprints as a result of the increased penalties? No, because that's the nature of sprinting.
But yeah, the key takeaway is this: The ban itself is minor in impact to rider or team, it is a headline grabbing punishment that makes the UCI look good. The real changes were already taking place with increased relegations anyway.
Ultimately the riders have to take their own responsibility, which full credit to Dylan he's seemed fairly genuine in his apologies and statements.

No, as I said, it's a fair punishment for the risk. I can immediatly remember a few other sprints with DSQ this year, Sagan in le Tour, Bennett in Vuelta and Alaphillipe in L-B-L. None of them were close to being as dangerous as what Groenewegen did.
He doesn't get punished because of Jakobsen's injuries, but because of the danger of his actions. This was just always going to end bad.

Absolutely agree. That's far too much and unprecedented for a racing accident "only" pushed by the harsh but unlucky & unintended consequences.

sure that Groenewegen will be focused on le Tour? seems that jumbo has different ideas about it, they can bring WVA much more versatile and fast enough to compete with pure sprinters...

Don't agree. If Jakobsen got away with minor injuries we wouldn't be talking about this. The injuries of Jakobsen are the reason for the lengthy ban. Otherwise we should be seeing these lengthy bans more often. These sort of manouvres in a mass sprint are very common and all of them are a potential disaster if you're unlucky. |
