Tour De France 2020
ringo182
Might as well start a new thread for the race which starts in less than 2 weeks. We can discuss the ongoing team news.

First news is that both Froome and Thomas have been left out of the Ineos TdF Squad.

Carapaz riding le Tour instead of il Giro. That must have been quite an internal debate. I think that Carapaz has been riding fine but not in form for a Tour victory yet so it's
all in for Bernal. And Carapaz becomes what everybody knew he would: another dom in the train.

Sucks for Carapaz, not able to defend his title.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Bit of panic from Ineos I think. They were clearly banking on at least Thomas being ready to support Bernal. I guess they wil now how Thomas and Froome can improve to lead at the Giro/Vuelta.

I can't really understand why Thomas is so poor. Froome has an obvious excuse. Thomas just seems to have either declined incredibly quickly or lost all motivation to train during the lockdown after winning the Tour.

Not surprised about Froome but Thomas is a shocker... always thought he would somehow magically start performing closer to the Tour but that obviously did not happen. Poor Carapaz though, doesn’t look like he will have plenty of chances this year but it’s what you get in a team like Ineos I guess.

Makes sense leaving Froome out imo. Surprisingly with Thomas, but he hasn’t been where he should be after the restart. He was bad in the Dauphine, but I still expected him to be in the squad. But respect to the Ineos management for reacting!

Now that Israel-contract looks pretty good for Froome...wonder whether Thomas will go back to classics then...

I certainly wasn't expecting to see both Thomas and Froome out of the Tour. Froome possibly but certainly not Thomas. The real loser here at first glance is Carapaz who has lost his chance for a second Giro BUT there could be a possibility that Bernal might not be as good as last year and the withdrawal with a backache from the Dauphine may well have just been an excuse to hide this fact and if that is the case then Carapaz could be the leader. Even if Bernal is the leader and given the amount of crashes that we know can happen, Carapaz could even have a chance of glory anyway, so it might not be so bad for him.

Froome is not so mysterious as the effect of the crash is looking obvious and he may well ride back to a certain level in Giro or Vuelta etc but Thomas though reminds me of 'the Wiggins syndrome' as a rider that is not a GT man and specialized in something else but then decides to become a serious GT man and gradually converts what they are good at like TT to becoming a climber and then backed by a super strong team and if the stars are aligned correctly they can win a GT Smile Once that's achieved they then continue for another year at a similar level Thomas at last year's Tour and Wiggins did the Giro after his success but then after that they can't maintain the level and go back to what they were originally good at and in Thomas' case that's classics and TT's

I doubt Carapaz will even play second violin (more likely Sivakov). If his peak was planned for the Giro in October, it's going to be hard to get ready in the next 10 days.

I always assumed that at least some part of the transfer was name recognition in the sense of "look, we can get one of the biggest names in all of cycling" and the publicity that comes with it. They had to have known that they're taking a risk wrt his performance levels. It's not like he has the regeneration of a 22 year old. At the same time, he started his peak late, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gets back to pretty high levels again. Too soon to judge, I guess, although you're right of course that it doesn't look great right now.

If that's the case and I know everybody is obsessed with the Tour they've completely ruined Carapaz's season as a second Giro was a real possibility.

I'm thinking Ineos just panicked because Jumbo humiliated them at their own game in the Dauphiné.

I agree Carapaz had a good chance of a 2nd Giro, Jumbo sent everyone to le Tour, Evenepoel is out for the season and between him, Yates and Nibali, everything was possible.

am I the only one who think that Carapaz was quite a casual winner at Giro? I never saw him stronger than everyone in mountain, and his TT isn't as good as other GT contenders, winning a Giro while main favourites are playing themselves is a thing, winning with leadership role at Ineos is another.

He did benefit from his opponents' passiveness, everyone kept looking at Roglic... but I think he has the ability and right conditions to lead a team in the Giro or Vuelta, whatever suits him better, rather than serving as a luxury domestique at the Tour. It's a shame because he's been demoted to a secondary role just as many others have, and will most likely not be in an ideal form (compared to Bernal or Sivakov) to have a headline-worthy performance...

I actually think Carapaz is the real deal and was a worthy winner of the Giro. It was probably the worst Giro I've ever seen because of the terrible route design but that is besides the point and he was the best rider over three weeks and had a steady nerve. Do I think he can win the Tour de France probably not but I can see him winning another GT either the Giro or Vuelta. His strength is that despite not being exceptional at anything he has no weaknesses either and recuperates very well over three weeks.

Made up a deficit of around 3' on his main rival and not even once he lost time to any of the other contenders until the very last mountain stage. Of course Roglic' form peak was way off but the others really didn't stand a chance either.

To be fair Roglic crashed three times and was ill towards the end of the race. I really hope the crash at Dauphine doesn't influence his Tour too much. He seems to have similar issues as Buchmann. And I think Kruijswijk won't be able to be there as well...
