Betonexpressz GP
History
| Year | Winner | Team | | 2018 | Michael Matthews | Compal-Merida | | 2017 | Matthew Goss | Indosat Ooredoo - ANZ | | 2016 | Andreas Stauff | Kraftwerk Man Machine |
The fourth edition of Hungary's prime sprinters festival: Betonexpressz GP. Held as a C2HC race this year, the race has a rich history of winners with some of the best sprinters for their respective division. None of them, or their teams for that matter, is present this time around. Fonseca has the best historic result from all participants, 7th in 2016. McLay is the best finisher from the previous edition, 16th. All continental teams are forced to come here due to their division structure, but that didn't deter them from bringing a top ace for the final kilometers to see their name added to the history books.
Profile

210 kilometers and 900 meters from and to Keszthely, a town of 20000 inhabitants on the shore of Lake Balaton. Despite not gaining much altitude overall, there are some nasty climbs in the area which will bring some difficulty to some sprinters. The top of the last climb is only 10 kilometer from the finish line with some slight undulation in between. Maybe a late attack can yield a surprising winner.

Nearly every team comes here with a designated sprinter, the only except being McCormick Pro Cycling. Holloway, the current leader in the CT standings, opted not to participate here. Their squad for this race contains mostly young riders looking for experience.
Krieger and Moser are the highest placed riders from the individual rankings at the start of the month, 8th and 10th respectively. Their seasons are going well and they are looking to gather another batch of points for this race.
Mohs might be the best sprinter on paper, and has enough experience from higher divisions. His lead-out is Szalontay, racing for his Hungarian home crowd.
The hill might be problematic for the likes of Guillen and Thorsen, as this kind of profile has not always suited them in the past. Maybe they can get rid of these demons once and for all and prove they can handle a hill.
Carsi has probably the best lead-out in Vingerling, but two top sprinters might not work together very well. On the other hand, two horses to bet on is better than one.
Mister Tour of America Granjel Cabrera is here, but this is not America. Nevertheless, he is a favorite to take the win in Hungary. Bennett is another favorite for the victory.
Boivin is probably the sprinter who can handle a hill the best, which is a useful skill to possess for this race. Geschke is a typical punchy sprinter, though he needs to be in a reduced bunch to have a chance at winning.
The Keough brothers, Luke and Jake, both appear on the startlist but for different teams. A healthy bit of brotherly rivalry between the two?
Dangerous outsiders are Awang and Von Hoff. They are not the biggest favorite but a perfect positioning and anything is possible. Other team leaders with the aim of at least a top ten are: Sobota, Yamamoto and Kamberaj.

Nice pickup on both Keoughs being here, not sure how often they both race against each other over the course of a season. Surprised there isn't a bit better field at this, but it is a challenging profile to predict as a flat specialist really could pull something off with that late challenge from the terrain leading into the sprint.

Praying that Boivin's hills ability will be enough to get a good result here, he's not been having a great season so far! Thanks for the preview!

Time for Moser to really perform here! He'll obviously need the help of the team to control the race and ensure that it ends in a sprint and I believe we have the strength to do just that.

Too long and too hilly for Krieger. Top 10 is the best he can do. Young can potentially surprise, if Krieger is dropped.

Not sure why I didn't bring Holloway here. Race is going to split up and will be a messy sprint where his secondary stats should play. Maybe I thought it was too hilly and that late attacks will be impossible to control. Maybe I screwed up.

Not at all happy with 6th. This was a goal race for a Top 5 and Moser has lost out to 2 no back-ups sprinters, especially Carsi surviving all the hills and over 200km. Also really annoyed with the lack of lead out from us given we had a top favourite and a team capable of doing so.
In other races, 6th would be acceptable, but not here...

Finally a good result from Guillen

KEOUGH! (Luke version)! Fantastic result as he continues what has been a fairly successful season so far in the sprints, even if his prologue races haven't been so great. Awesome for us to be getting big points without Eastman/Chaves now maybe should look at them as a big 3, Eastman, Chaves, and Keough.
Thanks for the report!

Very surprised this didn't break up more. Lead outs didn't help but still more of a sprint than I was expecting giving 200km and the hills. Maybe having only 2 riders in the break made for an easier chase.
I think the McCormick boys were trying to set up Manamalage for a late attack, which is a nice idea but a frail reed to lean on.
Congrats to Keough and thanks for the report.

Congrats on the win to Keough, but would have hoped for more from Boivin. At the end of the day a top 3 is a good amount of points and on to the next races we go!

Another promising lead out is not finished off by Mohs again! Becoming a frustration when McLay does some great work in the last KMs...
Well done Kent on another quick fire win
