Ninth and final mountain stage of this year's Vuelta al Tachira. A finish in Cerro El Cristo, we should see a big battle between Intxausti and Pinot, separated by 42 seconds in GC
11 riders in this breakaway. Most interesting riders are Azteca's duo of Mannion and Stetina, former stage winners in the race; De Vos, team-mate of yesterday's winner Faiers; and Niyonshuti, a surprise great performer yesterday
Abeloauche would be the only one caring about the KoM points in Alto Las Dantas, the first climb of the day. At that point, the gap with the bunch was around 6 minutes. Bellan had been already dropped from the breakaway
De Vos wins the sprint for the points in the second climb of the day; Alto de Berlin. Habtemichael and a surprising Stetina would get dropped in this climb, reducing the riders on it to 8
De Vos wins the penultimate climb KoM sprint too, as the breakaway gets reduced to just 4 riders: De Vos, Kriphta, Mannion, Craddock. They seem to be in a good position to fight for the stage win, given that at the top of that climb, their gap to the bunch is over 5 minutes
As soon as the road kicks up again, Mannion attacks and tries to go solo for the stage win. No response from the others yet
As yesterday, it's Faiers the one starting the moves in the bunch, attacking with 7 kms to go!
Potocki would easily bring him back, but now it was Manfredi's turn to attack, and Faiers went right after him
It's still a long way to the finish, almost 6 kms, and Mannion has already cracked. His latest attack wasn't a good idea, and the rest of the breakaway riders are about to catch him again
Faiers with another try, after Manfredi's move didn't go anywhere, and this time he got Intxausti and Saggiorato to follow it! Pinot and GCN are still trusting the team strenght
But Intxausti can't follow that attack! Faiers breaks free and is starting to look worrying for at least Kiserlovski's podium spot.
In the bunch still around 25 riders left, but not anymore true U25 leader Pavlic, who after a magnificient week so far, has cracked hard today
Khrypta has been the only one with enough strenght to close the gap to Mannion, but i'm afraid the breakaway has lost their chance to win with Faiers' multiple attacks, as the NENT leader is barely 1 minute behind them, having cut 4 minutes in just 3 kms since his first attack
Squire and Saggiorato can't follow the leader's group anymore. Saggiorato could even end up losing his Top10 spot in GC
Faiers has caught the breakaway with still around 3 kms left in the stage. We can also see a race recap
Potocki can't do any more work today, and it's time for a GC winning attack by Pinot!! Great move by the Frenchman, taking advantage of Intxausti not great positioning in that group to open a nice gap already
Intxausti vs Pinot! What a battle, exactly the one we came here to see in Tachira! Pinot is starting to pass the breakaway riders, while in front, Faiers has already left everyone behind and is looking to get a second consecutive stage win in the race
Elissonde isn't as strong as yesteday, as gets dropped when with Intxausti there are still riders like Brandt, Cort Nielsen or Atapuma, who had been much weaker all the week
Final kilometre for Thomas Faiers, who still holds a gap over the minute to Pinot, a gap enough to put him into the GC podium after the stage
22 seconds for Pinot ahead of the final kilometre. Even with bonus for finishing second, it wouldn't be enough for the Frenchman, he needs to push harder to distance the race leader!
Faiers is slowing down!! Pinot is quickly closing on him! The stage win isn't decided yet! 700 metres to go still
Supreme effort by Intxausti in this final km to almost catch Pinot already. He has saved his GC lead unless a dramatic turn around happens now. Even Kiserlovski could save his GC podium too
200 metres to go and Intxausti really wants now the stage win, and with Faiers "dead", and Pinot showing signs of extreme fatigue, it's his moment. The Spaniard launches his sprint...
... but he's too exhausted also, and can only pass Pinot!
So it's Thomas Faiers winning again in Cerro El Cristo! Two wins in two days for him! What a fantastic performance by the NENT rider today
Intxauti is second today, ahead of Pinot, both 13 seconds behind Faiers. A fantastic show both gave us in those final kms
+38'' Kiserlovski and Atapuma. Both were spectators of today's show, but they get to finish 4th and 5th in the stage. Kiserlovski is going to hard time keeping that podium spot from Faiers, will see later the GC standings
+1'15 Khyrpta, best breakaway rider today in sixth
+1'28 Brandt and Giogeri, who solidify their Top10 GC spots
+1'41 Mannion, paid for his brave attack in the breakaway. Maybe a better strategy would have landed a better stage result
+2'17 Cort Nielsen
+2'45 Elissonde
Not the best day for neither of them, as i think both of them will lose one spot in GC, and way behind them, Saggiorato finishing at 4'16. Terrible day for the Centovalli leader, that has done worse and worse after each mountain stage
Thomas Faiers will go to the podium 3 times today, not only as the stage winner, but he's also the new KoM leader, and the new Points leader
Beñat Inxausti is the race leader for the fourth consecutive day, and is just one hilly stage away from his first Tachira GC win. His lead is 46 seconds over Pinot, with Faiers now in third, 2'07 behind the Spaniard, and 6 seconds ahead of Kiserlovski in that podium battle
