Stage number 8 in Tachira, and it's the only non-top finish mountain stage in the race. 160 kms between El Piñal and Peribeca, with the climb of Alto Palo Grande being done 4 times by different sides. Surely an exciting stage coming up
From the very start, 5 riders attack and will from the BotD. No big or all-round climber, so probably the stage will end up in favourites' control despite the downhill finish
Solis
Mehr-Wenige
Kreuziger
Hoehn
Osorio
First time up Alto Palo Grande and the pace is quite high, meaning that a rider like Potocki was on the wrong side of the bunch, and got dropped, though he's trying to get back to a group with only 60 riders left now
Big moment in the race as race leader Intxausti is getting dropped with 63 kms to go!
GCN is wasting no time using all their domestique to avoid the Spaniard from coming back, and Vinhas' pace is incredibly high, the bunch is getting reduced a lot. We may see only 20-25 riders in the bunch after just 1 climb!!
Meanwhile, Osorio takes the points from Solis in this climb, though the Azteca rider looked more solid. The rest of the breakaway couldn't keep up with the pace, and will be caught by the ferocious bunch any time soon
Crucial time for Intxausti! Le Bon has reached his group, and is doing an incredible job trying to bring the race leader back to the bunch!
And Zalgiris' manager can breathe now normally, as both their riders are safely now in the bunch. Scary moment, that we are yet to know if it was because a lack of strenght, or something else
Solis won ahead of Osorio the next KoM, and also managed to drop him in the descent, so the Bolivian is now alone in front with 35 kms to go, though the bunch is spottable in the back of the image
First big name that has completely cracked. It's Atapuma. Not good at all for Europcar. Together with him, it's Mannion, runner-up in 2017, and Craddock, getting dropped too. Barely 25 riders left now in the leader's group
Solis reaches the summit of the 3rd pass over Alto Palo Grande with a gap of around 2 minutes over the favourites. Still far from getting the stage win, but it's looking good if the favourites plays this passive
Surely this one was unexpected. Azteca's leader is getting dropped while his team-mate Solis tries to go for the stage win. Squire won't continue to be on the podium fight
Just 15 riders remaining in the first group ahead of the final climb of the day. Intxausti has shown that what happened before it was just a fluke moment, but surely Pinot or Kiserlovski have to test him in this final climb
Diaz, Elissonde
Le Bon, Intxausti
Faiers, Gaspar
Pavlic, Giogieri
Pinot, Vinhas
Cort Nielsen
Kiserlovski
Brandt
Saggiorato
Niyonshuti
Some of the latest dropped riders, like Manfredi, Atapuma or Squire, have managed to come back in the descent, but it's likely they'll get dropped in the final ascent to Alto Palo Grande
Diaz is putting an insane pace in the group, working for his leader Elissonde. The group is back to have only 15-18 riders, and Solis' adventure is coming to an end, as his lead has been halved in just a couple of kms
Faiers is on the move, and Pinot waste no time following him! Elissonde and Intxausti are struggling more to follow them, but they might form a dangerous four-group in front, as Kiserlovski isn't reacting quick again, as in the first mountain stage
The attackers have caught Solis, with 2 kms left in the climb, and have 20 seconds on the group that is led by Kiserlovski
Pinot keeps pushing, and that makes Solis to give up on the stage win dream, but Intxausti, Faiers and Elissonde look to be strong enough to stay with the Frenchman
Kiserlovski has now dropped everyone but Cort Nielsen in the chasing group, and has very little space to connect with the leaders to avoid a time loss today
No further damage done to the front group, so unless someone gets dropped in the descent to the finish, it will come down to a 4-rider sprint for the win today, with Faiers clearly the favourite for the win between them
Neither Kiserlovski or Cort Nielsen are great descenders, so they are unable to reduce the gap to the front group, staying around 20-25 seconds behind them
Pinot is leading into the final km, and the sprint for the win and the bonus seconds should start at any moment
The sprint starts with barely 600 metres left, but Faiers is showing how superior he is to the others already. Seems like a nice fight for second place then
And it's a win for Thomas Faiers today!! Fantastic job by the NENT rider, who started the move in the final climb, and now outsprints his rivals to get his first win of the season, after some disappointing performances in the race so far.
Pinot narrowly beats Intxausti for second place, with Elissonde settleling for fourth place
Cort Nielsen beats Kiserlovski for fifth, with both losing 23 seconds to the leader's group
+ 1'11 for a group with Saggiorato, Diaz, Le Bon, Brandt and Solis
OVM's duo of Giogieri and Pavlic lose exactly 2 minutes
Squire finishes the stage over 5 minutes after Faiers. Awful day for him
Thomas Faiers goes to the podium as today's stage winner!
One more day in the lead for Beñat Intxausti, one less day to secure the GC win. He has 42 seconds over Pinot, with just one mountain stage left, and over 1'30 to Kiserlovski and almost 2 minutes to Elissonde. Faiers and Cort Nielsen climb to Top6, while both Squire and Atapuma drop out of Top10
