Course de Solidarnosc - Stage 3

Course de Solidarnosc – Stage 3

24 hours have passed since the last stage and we all know what that means by now: The peloton is ready for another stage! This time is a little bit different though... No it's not the profile. No, it's not the length either. Well, actually it is the length. Because unlike the other stages, with “only” 180 kilometers to go, this is by far the shortest stage of the Course de Solidarnosc. Riders who don't have too much stamina will be happy to hear that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh is leading the GC in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Van Heerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri has won yesterday however, and just like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen is trying to move up after a bad sprint in stage 1. Judging by how the past stages went, the winner will likely be one of these five.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0001.jpg

Four riders are trying to avoid a mass sprint, however:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Yamamoto (U25 jersey owner)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Eeckhout
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kreuziger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0003.jpg

Four riders try to join them:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel (KoM jersey owner)
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Yechezkel.

This break wasn't allowed to make it by the peloton. But once Yechezkel decided to drop, they were allowed to go. Seven names in the break then, here they are once again:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Yamamoto (U25 jersey owner)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Van der Ploeg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Eeckhout
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kreuziger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Vandewalle
and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Amanuel (KoM jersey owner).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0004.jpg

The peloton was quite scared of this break, probably due to the comparatively high amount of riders in it. This caused the break to get caught with 20 kilometers to go already. Unless we get to see any attacks, this will likely become a clean mass sprint with plenty of time for the teams to position themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0005.jpg

We're 3 kilometers off the finish line and it started raining! I hope we don't get any crashes... Oh who am I kidding. But it seems like we get a mess after all. GCN is leading with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png McLay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden having the best wheel of them all. Rothaus' train is on the right with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri is just chilling in the pack with his mates, as if he is on strike or something! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen isn't exactly in a winning position either...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0007.jpg

1,5 kilometers to go and GCN stormed ahead, wow! Surely the winner must become either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0008.jpg

With 1 kilometer to go this seems almost guaranteed... pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen has woken up as well and looks to go for third place today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0009.jpg

300 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden is in it to win it, will he finish it off?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0010.jpg

Indeed he can! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden is the surprising winner of the third stage of the Course du Solidarnosc! Certainly not the best sprinter on paper, but he was the smartest by far. He had the right wheel, benefit from second place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Keukeleire getting in the wind a bit too early, passed him and sealed the deal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0011.jpg

Far behind them, the other sprinters must be relieved to hear that no time gaps were given. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen takes third, in front of Coutinho, Vanoverschelde, Carsi, Guillén, GC leader Salleh, Angarita and Van Heerden.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0012.jpg

Meanwhile pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Guarnieri saw that a time gap almost appeared and decided to sprint just a little to avoid this from happening. 12th place for him...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0013.jpg

Even further behind though, we can see that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Yamamoto had to pay for his efforts of being in the break and will lose the U25 jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0014.jpg

So has anything changed in the GC? We'll see after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Vanderaerden gets the trophy for being the deserved stage winner!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0015.jpg

As for the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh is still going strong despite this stage being his worst so far. He is nine seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Manninen, which is quite a lot with just one stage to go. Guillén, Van Heerden, Vanderaerden and probably Keukeleire still have a shot at winning too, but likely need either a stage win or a very bad day from Salleh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Solidarnosc/3/PCM0016.jpg

And we end up this stage with the new U25 leader. It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Räim who has set the most consisent performances so far and is thus allowed to wear the U25 jersey on the final day! Whether he can keep is will be one of the many narratives of tomorrow's stage, which is promising to get very exciting. Until then!
