Euskal Bizikleta
It's been a few months since the organisers of the Euskal Bizikleta had a big party. And that's because the Tour got the news that the race, which was already first raced in 2009 already, will promote to a C2HC race! And with such a history, perhaps rightfully so, too.
And as an answer to it, the organisers made a new, very exciting route for all the CT riders who will race here starting tomorrow. Four stages, all gradually getting harder and hillier. The first two are classified as flat, but both have an amount of hills. The first stage's hills are shorter but there are more of them, while the second has longer climbs, including one near the end. Then the real fun for the GC contenders start, with two hilly-rated stages. First of all one with a downhill finish, and then the tour's finale uphill. Which will be the moment we will know who's going to follow up Bratashcuk as the new winner!
If it wasn't clear already: This is a race for puncheurs. Thereofre, they will be the only ones who could likely win this stage race. Of those, two can probably be named as the big favourites: Di Maggio and Gautier. Di Maggio as the best pure puncheur of the CT peloton (and even of the PCT peloton), but Gautier has much better substats. Gautier should always be up there with the best, though Di Maggio's performance will be more inconsistant. Perhaps too inconsistant to go for the win.
They are followed by two other riders who are hungry for this win: Meyer and Ben Nasser. Both two very good puncheurs with great attacking power who can always beat the former two on a good decisive day. They will be there near the front too.
Then still a lot of great puncheurs are left, and could always go for a top 3 if they outperform two of the top 4. Teuns, Serry and Teklit are three of those, but their comparatively weaker acceleration may make it hard for them to create gaps. Then, Vichot, Kadri, Hugentobler, Othman and a lot more weaker puncheurs on paper could enter the top 5 or even better with a well-timed attack.
Lastly, the first two stages are marked as flat which should give a chance for the sprinters. But it's hard to see how riders like Thorsen, Bogdanovics, Angarita and Habtom will get over the hills. Therefore, Manninen and Kreder should be the favourites for these stages. Although if the stages turn out to be as hard as they look, a puncheur may have the best legs in the final kilometer, too.

Well it's always exciting to be back racing but a hilly doesn't favour us at all, maybe a lucky breakaway for an elusive win

It's unlikely we will do something but maybe someone can hang on for a top 15.
I think our best bet for strong points would be if we are part of a breakaway that stays away.

Very nice start, hopefully we can maintain the white jersey with Pibernik later on

Another strong ride from Poljanec, shame he couldn't get 2 jersey's at once but we're more than happy to hold on to white

That's what I expected from Ballerini this season, finally he's started to deliver. Hopefully he can keep up the KoM battle and bring home the first jersey of that kind. and MAL (virtually) not losing time is also a great sign. Stage 4 should be favorable for him

Weiss and Hugentobler have both been attentive so far and positioned themselves well in the flat stages, hopefully this means that if they've got the legs they will manage to avoid getting caught behind any splits on the hills to come and they won't get dropped where they could easily have followed.

Two stages that just wasn't good enough by my boys. Missing to reel in thee breaker and then the following day screwing up the sprint completely
Thanks for the good reports though.

Awesome performance by Kadri! His downhill skills really came in handy today!
Will be interesting to see if we can defend the lead now. The uphill finish doesn't suit Kadri that well, but we'll wait and see.

In the breakaway 3/4 stages, white jersey all 4 days and 6th overall by Pibernik. That was a very nice race for us indeed
Thanks for all the reports Vien
