Celtic Chrono
What would have been the 10th edition of the "Isle of Man ITT" becomes the "Celtic Chrono" this year. The first leg of the ITT event will be held in the area of Belfast, Northern Ireland. And the second leg will be the classic Isle of Man route, that comes with a partly undulating profile and the iconic 'Snaefall' climb in the final quarter of the parcours. So, as for all of the previous nine editions of this well known British timetrial event, the TT specialists aiming for the victory certainly need to handle hills or nail it on the (still overwhelming) flat sectors of all those timetrial kilometres.
Two-time race champion Dominique Cornu (2017 and 2010) will be at the start again, aiming for the second consecutive and his third victory here. Jacob Fiedler (2016), Kai Reus (2015), Michael Rogers (2014), David Zabriskie (2013), Gustav Larsson (2012), Mikhail Ignatiev (2011) and Ben Day (2009) complete the list of past race winners.
The Startlist
The Favorites Favorites | HI | TT | | | Outsiders | HI | TT | Coppel | 76 | 83 | | | Koren | 74 | 78 | Zmorka | 66 | 82 | | | Reus | 73 | 78 | Keizer | 71 | 81 | | | Martin | 71 | 78 | Durbridge | 67 | 81 | | | Mullen | 70 | 78 | Ford | 55 | 81 | | | Tennant | 69 | 78 | Cornu | 71 | 80 | | | Janse van Rensburg | 68 | 78 | Sergent | 69 | 80 | | | Li | 61 | 78 | Viennet | 67 | 80 | | | Golovash | 60 | 78 | Schädlich | 64 | 80 | | | Kovalev | 56 | 78 | Ignatiev | 74 | 79 | | | Nepomnyachsniy | 74 | 77 | Brändle | 71 | 79 | | | Kung | 73 | 77 | Viviani | 66 | 79 | | | Postlberger | 68 | 77 | Mottin | 61 | 79 | | | Downey | 67 | 77 | Goldstein | 61 | 79 | | | Fominykh | 67 | 77 | Olman | 57 | 79 | | | Hussein | 64 | 77 |
With Cornu, Ignatiev and Reus we notice three previous race winners on the list of starters. They all handle hills pretty well, but Cornu remains the best pure timetrial specialist of this trio, facing some fierce competition though:
Coppel as the overwhelming favorite and a great opportunity to write his name on the honour roll here. Combining both TT and climbing skills in one superior fashion, it's definitely his race to lose.
Zmorka, Keizer and Durbridge probably as his biggest competitors, just like defending champion Cornu. Ford as another premium timetrial horse, but he obviously lacks the climbing skills to be considered a top favorite for such an event. The Aussie needs to deliver on the flat sectors.
The same goes for other Top-5/10 contenders such as Sergent, Viennet, Schädlich, Viviani, Mottin, Goldstein or Olman. Other riders like Brändle, Koren, Martin or Mullen may fancy their chances due to their solid skills on the hills, but they all need some very special legs on such a long timetrial event.

Snorefest. Guess Coppel or Zmorka winning is a must for their teams, would provide some rankings support.
Is this a stage race or classic btw rankings wise?

Classic. So the first "stage" ain't really a stage, but rather a "part one". The final total time will be counted as the usual TT classic results, that we had in the past. This two-parted stuff is to somehow avoid the well known TT randomness.

Not happy. The "first stage" kills the myth of the mountain influence of the Isle of Man ITT, thus makes it easier for the specialists. In the past riders like Brajkovic have been great here, now I fear Brändle may be the best bet only for a Top5, hoping for a podium though.

Coppel is unbeatable. Would be happy with a top 3.

Hoping on a somewhat decent performance from Janse van Rensburg. Haga always seems to overperform on hillier time trials.

I need something decent from Cornu here so I’m hoping for a Top 3 with Top 5 at the very least.

Looks like another chance for Reus, he hasn't taken any so far this season

C’mon Mr Mullen, you little Irish leprechaun you! Go find your pot of gold, and shock the critics (never mind your team manager...)

anything else than two victories by coppel would be really heartbreaking here, especially with his ability on the hills for stage 2 |

I predict that Coppel has an awful day and Wen Hao Li flies out of nowhere and takes the race by a full minute. Anything is possible, right?
And Keizer finds his way into the top-5, of course

5th is meh, but Zmorka has proven his worth already this season. So I'm fine with it.

As expected. Has Coppel lost an ITT this season yet? Congrats though to Carrefour, Coppel unstoppable. Can’t wait to see him dominate the two ITT stages in rundfahrt too.
Keizer landing on the podium after such a long absence for our team is wonderful though! Manulang as well consistent as always getting a little trickle of points flowing too.

Haga with a good first TT but a worse second TT.
Rensburg with a bad first TT but a better second TT.
Overall a decent result though, 17th and 18th.
Thanks tsmoha and congrats Maxime!
