 Ronde van het Ijsselmeer
Lakes, wind and dykes – you guessed it right, we're in the Netherlands!
This new one-day C1 classic features laps around the Ijsselmeer. Once a part of the sea, the Ijsselmeer is now the area between two dykes that have a highway on top of them. And yes, we're crossing both. And we all know what that means... Crosswinds! over 200 kilometres where something can happen at any minute. Oh boy, I can't wait.
It's hard to find a stat that shows how good anyone is at being at the right place at the right time in terms of crosswinds. Therefore, in this preview, they will be ignored mainly. But a good flat stat will always help to cross any gaps that exist in these cases.
If the race will end up in a mass sprint, Degenkolb should be the main favourite. Iberia's leader hasn't dominated the sprints in the PCT so far this season, but this Ronde should get him back on track if his team plays out this race well.
Coming right behind him are Ewan and Mohs. Both a slightly weaker top speed, but still more than enough potential to beat Degenkolb on a good day, or with better positioning.
Then there are a few a bit more handicapped sprinters, who will need to find a way around one or two weaker stats. Vantomme, Vanderbiest and Saber lack the sprint stamina for what likely will be a long sprint, Nelson might lose a bit of power before the sprint starts already. Holloway does have the stats necessary to do a good sprint, but has weak teammates and likely won't get the train needed to go for victory.
A lot further down the list but with some upset potential are Van Asbroeck, Xero's Van der Sande/Rowe duo and Lander, all classical overperformers. Though the lack of hills might make their potential suffer a bit.

Another race with the sprint duo, Berlin was an absolute dogshow so I’m hoping for better here with some big winds! Thanks for the preview Vien, if I could make a request could you include the start list next time please?

This race is one of our weird decision during planning. Getting a C1 flat classic for Roelandts but forgetting to bring him here. So actually a chance for Vanmarcke to lead the team in a flat classic, hoping for a chaotic race where his high flat can stand out to bring us a few points

Hoping for heavy crosswinds and the pack going into pieces, with only the strongest to survive!
No chance for our amateur's team. So they should try to join the early break.

Should be interesting. Sadly Mikhail Ignatiev is not here to help, but I hope the Mohs/Guardini/Stepniak leadout can work once more

Seems like an attack by Vanbilsen will be my best chance of success, although you can never truely rule out van Asbroeck. But happy with just a top 10 in this field.

Another race the Netherlands, where we've done poorly so far. Saber has been over-performing regularly, so a bad result is due. Perfect race for that, as perhaps the conditions won't suit him. Hopefully not. The full sprint train is here in support.

Wow  What a performance in exactly the right conditions, Rowe with a fantastic race showing true flat strength and earning a huge podium, with Tosh showing maturity to ride to the top 10. Agonising to miss out by so little but in all honesty I don’t see the result changing if Rowe catches Holloway  Debesay using his strength to pick up a few points in 26th and Jams with a good ride for a Lvl3 rider are both nice too. Congratulations Selwink, and cheers Vien!

While I like windy action like this and it`s nice to see some races being mixed and different, it`s just crazy how much time you can gain or lose in the wind in PCM.
Less than 10km and Holloway basically gaining more than a minute on a strong group. The attack alone bringing a too big time gap unfortunately.
Nevertheless congrats Selwink to this great start, surely the deserved winner. |

Can't be too unhappy with 7th place here. Glad Saber could hang on to the strongest group when the split happened and got us important points. Te Brake getting some minor points too despite being dropped twice is useful. A much better performance in our primary focus nation than in previous races.

Holloway finaly showing why I rated him so high in my season preview, well done! It seems Vanbilsen worked for Van Asbroeck instead of countering, but I really can't complain with 4th + 8th. This should give us some safety in the rankings.
Thanks for the report Vien, I really liked this race and I hope it can stay on the calendar for next season.

I disagree. Holloway is one of the best flat riders in the peloton, and if in behind people are not committing perfectly or just a weaker rider paces you can pull out a minute quite well. I think we often had the issue that time gaps have been too narrow despite the wind, while this was how a windy race is cool to pan out.

Vanmarcke went too early with his move so it's a 0 from this race. Not really worrying, but had hopes of minor points with him. Only if he had waited until the final kms to make his move...

Fun race, just like I had hoped it would unfold!
Gutsy ride by Holloway, who plays his strength to perfection. A battle between him and Rowe would have been great, but he was just too strong to get caught. Congrats!
Mitchelton with my favorite Mitchelton rider O'Brien in the early break. Couldn't ask for more. The final result doesn't matter for our amateurs in this flat classic.
