Time for the hilly stage that should see a complete shake-up of the current GC and give us a potential list of riders that in the final TTshould fight for the GC win... or probably for a podium position, as while the two decisive stages are yet to come, with his late attack yesterday, Ignatiev has gotten an advantage that pretty much gives him a 99% of winning the race.
Looking at previous years, the stage isn’t really hard, and maybe a punchy sprinter could survive to fight in the end. Anyway, the stage favourite should be Jonathan Bellis. Probably the top puncheur in the field... without considering his sprinting skills. Bilbao and Barbin (last year’s stage winner) are two good bets too for the win today. Other punchy sprinters like Kuboki or Alaphilippe should be up there. And maybe Ewan or Van Asbroeck, being the better puncheurs between the sprinters can be in the mix too. And we better not count out Ignatiev after yesterday’s show. So anyway, an exciting stage to come
4 riders would attack from the first kms of the stage
Novardianto
Pokidov
De Plus
Vandousselaere
Two of the riders that were in the breakaway yesterday and are the two first ranked in the KoM, have decided that they want to fight for the KoM jersey, as both Orlov and Van Niekerk attack before the first KoM of the day
They got to the breakaway before it, though Orlov could not stop Vandousselare from taking the W in the first KoM, with De Plus coming in third
It would be the young Belgian climber the one to win the second and final KoM, with Vandousselare beating again Orlov, this time for second place.
Orlov will retain the KoM jersey, with 16 points, for 10 of Vandousselare and 8 of De Plus.
With less than 40 kms to go, the breakaway has a 3-minute gap to the bunch, where SPAR and Fablok are taking the biggest work in the chase. Also, important to mention the really high wind present in the zone, that could affect riders depending on direction in the final kms
16 kms to go and Dowsett goes into the attack! Bilbao, Bellis and Barbin quickly try to follow
Dowsett reached the breakaway group in the moment that Vandousselare tried to leave them behind. Bilbao couldn’t get the wheel of Dowsett, and could lose the chance for the stage win if he can’t make it to the breakaway group.
Bellis and Barbin struggled more to get out of the bunch, though they didn’t go alone, as Roux saw the chance to join them, as Fablok is looking rather passive, maybe a lack of puncheur domestiques?
Bilbao saved his stage getting to that breakaway group quickly, and he started to share the work with Dowsett, trying to avoid other top puncheurs from joining their gruop. Vandousselare is still in the front with 10 seconds over Bilbao’s group with 10 kms to go.
The reactless bunch is already 2 minutes behind the leaders, and both Steensen and Kuboki have attacked out of it
A new pass over the finish line with just 7 kms to go, and now Dowsett, Bilbao and Bellis have left behind the breakaway, and also Roux and Barbin. In the bunch, Generali is putting Kung to work, with ocassional help from the race leader
5 kms to go! The stage win is going to be decided between the leading trio and the chasing duo of Roux and Barbin, who are just 15 seconds behind. The gap to the bunch has rised to over 2 minutes now. As neither of these riders is even half decent against the clock, the gap isn’t very worrying for the GC favourites, but better not give them 3-4 minutes ahead of the TT
Final km for the leading trio, as the chasing duo lost the fight and is already losing 30 seconds to them. Bilbao leads, with a little gap to Dowsett and Bellis. The gap to the bunch is now stable in 2 minutes, thanks to Generali’s work
Bilbao is sprinting to the win, with only Bellis being close, as Dowsett suffered from the previous effort, and can’t even accelerate for the sprint
And the Spanish champion gets the win in Velje! Didn’t look the strongest today, but was the first to follow Dowsett’s attack, and also the first (after Dowsett) to reach the breakaway group
Bellis gets second, 11 seconds later, with Dowsett, 9 seconds further behind, in the podium too
Roux crosses the line in fourth place (+45), just ahead of Barbin (+53). And now we wait for the bunch to come, as they must be entering the final km now
Amazing display of power by Steensen, as he sprints to sixth place, overtaking Kuboki (the Japanese had attacked previously and was 20 seconds ahead before the final km).
Brandle, Bazkhou and Ignatiev lead the actual bunch home, around 2’10 after Bilbao finished, but jury decides that the group gets the same time as Steensen and Kuboki, which is 1’56 behind Bilbao. Around 30 riders finished in the same time as Steensen, with several timetrialist there, like Kung, Tennant, Navardauskas, the already mentioned Steensen, Kuboki, Brandle, Bazkhou, Ignatiev, Koren and a really big surprise in Marlen Zmorka. Can the Ukranian, as the top timetrialist in PCT, make up the 54 seconds that Ignatiev has on him in the 30-km TT?
Pello Bilbao not only wins the stage, but also becomes the new race leader. 19 seconds over Bellis, 32 to Dowsett, 1’13 to Barbin and 1’22 to Ignatiev, the most important gap, and probably a very short one for the Spaniard to really have a chance to win GC. Also 2’16 to all other big timetrialists, like Zmorka. Tomorrow a short flat stage before the big show in the TT
