Tour of Japan - Stage 5
Aquarius97
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-000.jpg

The GC gets decided today, in the stage that goes from Fuji to Mount Okanoyama. Just 157 kms of stage, but a non-stop of short climbs, before the final two passes by Okanoyama, in the second finishing the stage in its top.

The puncheurs have to attack the climbers if they want to recover the time they lost yesterday in Mount Fuji TT, but there’s one puncheur very well placed in GC, and that’s Michal Kwiatkowski. Just 37 seconds separate the Pole from race leader Stefan Denifl, the winner yesterday in Fuji. And with such a hard stage, odds are with Kwiato to win the race

A lot of activity in the first kms of the stages, but with so many riders attacking, they were doomed because the bunch wouldn’t allow them. Between them, there were riders like Zoidl, Henao, Roux, Nardin, Herrada, Rovny, Wahyudi or Hughes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-001.jpg

Nardin would take the points in the first climb, ahead of Hughes and Pichon. The new group of attackers included too Henao, Wahyudi, Siskevicius, Gougeard, Koshevoy and Schlegel

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-002.jpg

Looks like 7 riders were able to finally breakaway from the bunch, or just that some teams are re-organising themselves to chase better. But of those 7, 3 of them looks kinda wasted already, so hard to believe they’ll be in the breakaway for long time

Pichon
Siskevicius
Gougeard
Nardin

Hughes
Wahyudi
Henao

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-003.jpg

Same pattern for a long part of the stage. Nardin sprints and take the KoM points at each climb (which puts him as provisional KoM leader), Henao barely gets to reach the group before getting dropped again, the top puncheurs of the break don’t care about the points, and the bunch don’t allowe their gap to be higher than 3 minutes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-004.jpg

Schlegel had joined the breakaway around mid-stage, seeing that Nardin was winning the KoM jersey just by being there. He went to win the last two KoM sprints in the shorter climb, but that wasn’t enough for him to gain the jersey, as he was left just 2 points behind Nardin in the standings. Siskevicius, Pichon and Gougeard were always attentive, not letting them a big gap when they were sprinting, just in case they decided to stay ahead of them. The rest of riders that were in the breakaway had been already caught by the bunch with 30 kms to go, a bunch that is 2’30 behnd the breakaway now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-005.jpg

First pass by Mount Okanoyama, and a very calmed climb so far. Pichon put the hammer down in the breakaway, which saw Schlegel getting dropped, and Nardin and Gougeard suffering a lot to stay there, but no one was really pacing in the bunch, so the gap rised to 4 minutes, which puts Siskevicius almost as virtual race leader

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-006.jpg

Pichon also attacks and drops both Siskevicius and Gougeard! The Frenchman is not only looking for the stage win, but also for a big GC result if he can keep the current gap to the bunch, where apart from Moazemi setting a steady, but not high, pace, no one is trying anything yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-007.jpg

Netia takes control of the bunch, but for the stage win is surely too late. They are obviously going for the GC win

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-008.jpgpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-009.jpg

Pichon already has a minute of his closest chasers in the moment of starting the second and final pass by Mount Okanoyama. The bunch is 4’30 behind, so that’s borderline with his current deficit in GC

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-010.jpg

Netia’s work has paid off, as when the bunch starts the final climb, the gap to Pichon is 3’30, eliminating the risk of a GC upset from the Frenchman. Also, in the remainings of the breakaway, Siskevicius had left Gougeard behind and might be catching Pichon quite soon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-011.jpg

Just 4 kms to go for Pichon, who holds a 40-second gap to Siskevicius, who is losing time to the Nordstrom rider again

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-012.jpg

There goes Kinoshita... but it looks like he putting a high pace instead of an attack, really strange... But this could be a mayor help for Kwiatkowski, as Denifl looks to be slidding down the field, losing places, while the Netia rider is close to Kinoshita. They have caught Schlegel in that moment, and are about to do the same with Gougeard. Pichon still has 2’30 with 3 kms to go for him

Also, not sure what happened with him, but Betancourt is like 2 minutes behind the favourite’s group, where only around 45 riders remain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-013.jpg

Kinoshita and McCarthy have opened a little split to Netia riders that are pulling from the bunch, while also catching Gougeard. Too close from the finish to really a be an attack for GC, but Pichon being 2’10 ahead doesn’t make it look like a stage win attack. We’ll see

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-014.jpg

The favourites are overtaking some lapped riders, in the moment that Squire (5th GC) gets dropped. And we can see how Denifl is already in the last places of the group, like Meintjes (6th GC)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-015.jpg

Game changing move, as Kwiatkowski, together with Dyrnes, joins Kinoshita and McCarthy into the attack with just 2 kms to go. And there’s not enough power in that leader’s group to bring them back

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-016.jpg

Pichon enters the final km, knowing that the stage win is really close, but he also got the info of attacks behind him, and his gap melting down really quick, so he’s really safe yet

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-017.jpg

Izagirre has also attacked from the bunch, as Siskevicius was caught by this group too. The gap to Denifl’s group is around 50 seconds, which would be enough for Kwiatkowski to take the GC lead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-018.jpg

Laurent Pichon wins the stage in Mount Okanoyama! Really deserved win, after such a great tactic. But let’s go back to the GC battle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-019.jpg

Kinoshita wins the sprint for the second place, with McCarthy third, so that denies Kwiatkowski any bonus seconds. They all come 1’05 after Pichon

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-020.jpg

Fifth place for Izagirre (+1’17)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-021.jpg

Dyrnes and Siskevicius come next. At 1’31

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-022.jpg

Roche, Poljanski and Rovny lead the bunch home, crossing the line 1’55 after Pichon, which means that Kwiatkowski is already the new race leader, but Denifl isn’t nowhere to be seen in the first places now

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-023.jpg

And there comes Denifl, who completely cracked in the final km, and is losing a lot of time (2’53)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-024.jpg

While Pichon goes to the podium as stage winner, let’s take a look at gaps to all the important riders

1’55 for Roux and Moazemi
2’12 for Roglic, Meintjes, Kuboki, Monsalve, Choi, Nepomyanschiy
2’53 for Lopez, Betancourt, Bennett, Denifl
3’21 for Squire, Tvetcov, Rabottini

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/JapT/JapT-5-025.jpg

As we already said, Michal Kwiatkowski takes the lead after this stage, pretty much securing a GC win too, with the final stage being a flat one. Denifl at least gets second place, 1’11 behind the new leader, with Monsalve just 4 seconds behind the Austrian. Roglic takes fourth place, with McCarthy rising to 5th. The rest of the Top10 is for Meintjes, Choi, Moazemi, Kinoshita and Nepomyanschiy.

McCarthy takes the lead in the Points standings, though Kuboki being just 5 points behind should give the Japanese the edge in the final stage
