Fouth stage of Tour of Japan and probably its most decisive stage, with the timetrial up Mount Fuji. Only 11 kms, but gaps between climbers and puncheurs could be huge. Yesterday, McCarthy won the stage attacking and got the race lead. The best climbers came 55 seconds later (Kwiatkowski at 28), so they have the race in control yet. But those climbers need to deliver today.
After an horrendous stage yesterday, Nazaret is the first great climber to start, and obviously sets the fastest time by far. 31’24, and at least one minute faster than everyone else
Ratiy beats Nazaret by 10 seconds, other rider that lost too much time yesterday (128th GC +12’19)
Duarte (120th GC +12’10) does a time of exactly 31 minutes, beating Ratiy by 14 seconds
Henao (105th GC +8’20) can’t beat even Duarte’s time. Not his race
Ji (65th GC, +4’45) is the first climber that could get a minor GC placement after this stage. His time is 27 seconds worse than Duarte’s
Some interesting times for riders not so far down in GC like Iino (+38) or Bennett (+51), before first top puncheurs comes with Betancourt, who loses 1’46
Squire (22th GC +1’07) does a great time, just 31 seconds slower than Duarte
Bad times for both Poljanski (18th GC, +1’04) and Roche (17th GC, +1’03). Poljanski loses 1’25 to Duarte, while Roche loses 2’21!
Decent time for Roglic (16th GC, +1’02), losing 16 seconds to Duarte. Won’t be enough to win the race, but he should get close to a podium place with this, maybe
There comes Denifl, last year’s winner here in Mount Fuji (13th, +57’’). And he’s going for a second win here, as he beats Duarte by 44 seconds! That’s a winning time!
The Austrian even overtake his team-mate Gidich (14th GC, +57’’), and U25 leader. Surely losing 3 minutes to his team-mate won’t help him in that battle
Monsalve (12th, +57’’) is only third, even behind Duarte, losing 45 seconds to Denifl, who can almost celebrate his stage win now
Not a good day for Meintjes either (11th GC +56’’), losing 1’30 to Denifl
Choi (10th GC, +54’’) does a time 1’33 slower than Denifl. Could have been better
Nepomyanschiy (8th, +52’’) with a not so bad time, 1’47 to Denifl, but close to way better climbers like Meintjes or Choi
Bazkhou (+3’46), Krupois (+3’50), Bille (+3’41), Kuboki (+3’46) with horrible times as expected, but it comes next Kwiatkowski (4th GC, +28’’), having overtaken Kuboki up the climb.
Great time for the Pole, 7th best so far, 1’05 worse than Denifl. The time should be good enough to put him second in GC, and with the chance to attack Denifl in tomorrow’s hilly stage
Bad day for Kinoshita (3rd GC, +19’’), who lost way more time than he would have liked, 3’35 to Denifl
Moazemi (2nd GC, +16’’) ends up losing 2’33. He could have expected this time loss, but his team having Denifl as stage winner and new leader, won’t care too much about him anyway
And the last rider of course Jay McCarthy, as race leader. No one could ever expected a good MTT from a rider like him, so him losing just 3’38 is a good thing
All this means that Stefan Denifl wins the Fuji TT for the second consecutive year
The Austrian climber is also the new race leader, with just one hilly stage left in the race (plus a final flat one). His lead over Michal Kwiatkowski is 37 seconds, with Monsalve third at 46, Roglic + 1’07 and Squire + 1’27. Top puncheurs in McCarthy, Betancourt and Kinoshita are 2’42, 2’50 and 2’58 behind him in GC, probably too much distance to gain it in that hilly stage
Kuboki stays as Points leader, same as Carthy in KoM. But Lopez takes the U25 lead from Gidich
